To ask if you have a wage/income that would shock people?

Inspired by the tipping hairdresser thread, and a post on there about people having no idea what some people earn with an anecdote about a London cabbie earning twice what his nurse wife did.

I just wondered if anyone does a job where people would actually be shocked to know their true earnings based on stereotype- either way. For example cleaner earning loads or lawyer earning very little.

I'm a childminder and earn £4.5k a month. I think most people would be surprised about that. I'm cheap for my area too.

How many kids do you look after? Maybe I should look into this..

Friend of mine has a business in building and makes millions each year. He owns a huge business! He then brought out more businesses and so on but in random things like cricket kit. Or school uniform shops

he is however the most generous person I know. I always say I don’t know how he manages to stay rich due to how much he gives away. You could go to him and say I can’t feed my family could you loan me this and he would. 100000%.

I’m a carer. I work 119 hours a week and I’m on call the other 49 hours in a week. I do all personal care for my client. I earn £69.70 a week

My 16 yo earns around £100 an hr. He is a musician and that is his performance rate. Obv that doesn't take into account the hours they practice, travel etc. They currently earn about £10k working on average 2 hrs a week.

Is he a session musician? I worked with those guys (I worked in the music industry for many years). Those guys are so incredibly skilled! Phenomenal stuff.

When my DP was a painter/decorator he earned 60K doing it in construction.

He earns 30K now so half of that previous wage by project managing building sites! Workers earn way more.

30k for PM work, that is ridiculously low, where I am, PM's get at least 50k, some much much more

CuteAsDuck · 28/02/2023 19:33

I'm a paediatric speech and language therapist in a specialist area and take home less than £20k a year. F/t hours but 10 months out of 12 so wage is pro rata.

Top of my band, poor career progression in my area. I consider myself highly skilled in my specialism but there's limited potential for growth so considering leaving the job as it's nowhere near worth the money.

He does performing and session work. He earns more performing live at the moment than doing session work due to his age really, even though he's good enough. He truly loves it, hopefully if he keeps working hard he can make a reasonable living doing a mixture of various music related jobs. The first thing he wants to do once he's old enough is to go and perform on a few cruise ships.

i think childminding entirely depends on the area.

A friend of mine had to massively drop her rates when she moved as she went from a high paying area with very few childminders to one with an abundance of people doing it and very low costs.

I work as an admin assistant, before starting 7 months ago I had no prior prior experience of the role. Its an easy, no stress role most days and I love it.

I currently earn more per hour than any other job that I have had, I didnt even earn this much when I was a qualified nurse with 7 years experience!

Oh. I’ve met lots of poor farmers!

This can’t be true. Band 2 salary starts at £23k. Band 7 at £43k. A few nights and weekends don’t add up to and extra £20k!! (Scotland wages.)

Drumrolls · 28/02/2023 19:42

DH earns £400k+ a year as a software engineer in a non management role. A large part of his salary package is in stock options - he got a good deal as he's worked for the same company for 16 years. The offer is much less generous these days, especially if you aren't keen to move into management.

Ooh. What does he play? If you tell me he plays multiple instruments as a session musician. I might cry with jealously 😂

rocksonrocks · 28/02/2023 19:44

I work for the biggest bank in the UK, mid level management position but in a vital department. After my annual increase in April I will be earning £25.5k.

He sings plus plays guitar and piano. Mainly guitar. I am so jealous, it must be lovely to work doing something you love. I play a few instruments but never continued as an adult other than for fun. He's still at college so gets to play around producing music a few days a week also with his mates. What a life eh 😂

I work in a non technical role in IT and earn 155k. With bonuses our household income is usually 300k-320k. Neither are flashy so I doubt anyone we know would guess.

Curious0yster · 28/02/2023 19:54

I’m a band 6 NHS nurse working full time on a ward (weekdays only). My ward has 1 x band 7 and 2 x band 6 nurses. I am the clinical lead and share managerial responsibilities for a team of over 60 staff. I am also a nurse prescriber. I earn £32k. Full time ward nursing is much harder than many people realise. I am exhausted but cannot afford to work less.

Its true. Im on 30h/week on 42k.
i have friends band2 ( at the top if their band) that take home more than me at the end of the months after all the deductions ( PAYE, NI, Pension 9.8%) because its all deducted by percentage- the more you earn the more you pay. And agenda for change is extra 30% per night shift or Saturday and extra 60% per Sunday or bank holiday.

Ruesy · 28/02/2023 20:07

I literally make coffee and bacon sandwiches all day in a busy takeaway, last year I earnt 32K and I'm only a basic employee.

Shesheadingonin · 28/02/2023 20:11

Legal secretary for a city law firm in London, 30 hours a week, £45k.

MrsMrsD · 28/02/2023 20:12

I'm a junior merchandiser and earn £46k. Most of my colleagues are on £20-£35k.

Daftmum47 · 28/02/2023 20:15

This is perhaps overly cynical, but I have noticed a loose trend whereby professional wages always go down when women start entering those professions. I know manual jobs are hard work but it doesn’t really surprise me that the big bucks have gone back to brickies, plumbers and gas engineers…

Changedforthus · 28/02/2023 20:17

I am a locum social worker and my salary works out at nearly 110k per annum.
