To think that people who light bonfires in the day are selfish?

Beautiful weather for drying washing this weekend. Got it in and it stank of bonfire smoke . I was in all weekend with the windows shut so didn't smell any fires . I've had to bloody rewash the lot . I'm fuming . Apparently there is no law stopping anyone lighting fires in the day time . Yes I've lit fires but always after dark or after 8 pm in Summer .

Yes they are totally selfish pricks. Ive got one near me god knows what they find to burn all the time.

WiIson · 27/02/2023 18:37

Surely fires at night in the summer is also selfish as it means people have to keep their windows shut?

TwilightSkies · 27/02/2023 18:38

Try living in Northern Ireland in July 😑

pawz · 27/02/2023 18:40

I mean disposing of garden waste via a bonfire is probably a better idea in daytime rather than night time, especially when you need to supervise it!

You lighting fires after 8pm or after dark is just as bad imo 🤷🏻‍♀️

But I live in the countryside, so bonfires or manure are high risk!

Floofydawg · 27/02/2023 18:41

Garden fires at anytime are the ultimate in selfish twattery.

Givemethestrength · 27/02/2023 18:42

Both my neighbours either side do this and it drives me mad, any time they see washing on the line or my windows open!

We have a recycling centre at the bottom of our road, there's literally no excuse to be burning shit in their gardens 🙄

bakermummy21 · 27/02/2023 18:44

Bonfires are very antisocial. Hate them

Misslizzie96 · 27/02/2023 18:46

Our neighbour does this, so selfish, f”&ck knows what blowing about in the wind as he’s always doing some kind of botched DIY. Also always does it on very warm summer nights so have to have all bedroom windows closed.

StrawberryWater · 27/02/2023 18:49

It’s selfish and rude, If you must have a bonfire etc at least warn the neighbours.

One of my neighbours had his log burner burning every day one year, even in the extreme heat. He was burning all sorts and it smelt disgusting. Couldn’t go in the garden, couldn’t put washing out, couldn’t even open the windows.

He only stopped when the neighbour on the other side got fed up and rage shouted at him nonstop for 45 minutes straight at the top of his voice. He’s not had it on much since.

To be honest if the other neighbour hadn’t done anything I might’ve. Council wouldn’t do a single damn thing.

DewinDwl · 27/02/2023 18:50

Selfish bastards I hope they burn in hell. YANBU.

mumda · 27/02/2023 18:51

My neighbour has been collecting rubbish from other houses for his most recent burns. I assume his 4 day-er last week used all his rotten wood up. He is a CF and I don't mean cheeky.

I appreciate fires have to be lit but I think after dark and late at night is reasonable

But after dark in summer is reasonable because you have given the neighbours the whole day to enjoy their garden and get their washing dry . It's about give and take.

I think I’m missing something, I love the smell of bonfires. Even on clean washing.

BiasedBinding · 27/02/2023 18:57

I would be incredibly fucked off about a fire late at night, I have my windows open all night and it would wake me up. So anti social

SgtBilko · 27/02/2023 18:58

I'd add people who don't use smokeless fuel for barbecues to that. My neighbours have one both days every weekend so I can never put any washing out.

So when everything is inside the house and the windows are open and everyone is sleeping?! It doesn’t get dark until late you nugget

BiasedBinding · 27/02/2023 18:59

The entire inside of my house could smell of smoke instead

MintJulia · 27/02/2023 19:01

I light a bonfire, usually late afternoon, between November and March. I always check that none of the neighbours (only three of them) have washing out.

There is, as a pp said, a recycling centre very close by. However the local councils have decided we must use the one 17 miles away, ie a 34 mile round trip. So I'll carry on burning garden prunings.

Guis · 27/02/2023 19:01

It is selfish.
People should go to the recycling. Very few things must need to be burnt at home.

ZebraKid71 · 27/02/2023 19:02

Contrary to most of the above, i dont think it is unreasonable if they give you warning or ask which day would be best for you. We burnt the old garden fence last year and gave the neighbours a head up the night before. It's literally a few hours.. if they are doing it constantly then it would likely be an issue but every now and again I don't see the problem.

Datafan55 · 27/02/2023 19:02

It's like anything - if someone does it all the time, it's selfish.
Occasional bonfires are fine.
No one warns their neighbours these days, but that would be a nice thing to do.
Annoying when eg round here one person has one, then another person has one, etc, but to be expected from a crowded neighbourhood.
As to lighting them at night, I personally would like to know it's burnt down and gone out before bedtime!

AmandaHoldensLips · 27/02/2023 19:04

Thank god I'm in a smokeless zone now. Previously had 2 bonfire-pest neighbours who were constantly burning any old shit they could get their hands on. Selfish ignorant gits who deserved to have dog shit posted through their letterboxes.

MintJulia · 27/02/2023 19:06

'One of my neighbours had his log burner burning every day one year, even in the extreme heat.'

He must be mad. Or disposing of evidence of a crime. That would be unbearable.

Twizbe · 27/02/2023 19:07

Yep total pricks. We have a neighbours who's garden runs along the bottom of ours.

He was always having bonfires on beautiful sunny days to burn garden waste. What was really dickish was that this waste was from his landscaping business (so burning was illegal).

We complained loads, dick still did it.

Then one morning around 3am I was woken up by a bright orange light outside and the sound of breaking glass.

Opened my curtains and there was an inferno outside.

Fire brigade arrived and put it out but not before he'd burnt down another neighbour's shed... a shed that contained her late husband's belongings....

He was lucky the wind was blowing away from our house or we'd have burnt in our beds.

He's a proper dick.
