To think that people who light bonfires in the day are selfish?

Beautiful weather for drying washing this weekend. Got it in and it stank of bonfire smoke . I was in all weekend with the windows shut so didn't smell any fires . I've had to bloody rewash the lot . I'm fuming . Apparently there is no law stopping anyone lighting fires in the day time . Yes I've lit fires but always after dark or after 8 pm in Summer .

OP your logic seems to be that you don't annoy people like you so it's OK. Everyone who doesn't care, or doesn't like it at night, isn't reasonable.

Plenty of places don't allow burning at all. Everyone lives with it.

Spanielsarepainless · 27/02/2023 19:51

We had this at our last house. Always gorgeous days, washing out, windows open. My husband had a word over the fence as it wasn't the neighbour but her moronic son. He told him unless the almost daily fire stopped, all the other neighbours were clubbing together for legal action. It worked.

Mangogogogo · 27/02/2023 19:55

Doesn’t bother me in the slightest.. and nah I’m not one of them who does them. I’d burn my fucken house down knowing me

BlueKaftan · 27/02/2023 19:55

My neighbor was especially keen on a bonfire during the early months of Covid when it was warm and sunny. Didn’t care that there was a global respiratory disease going on.

I appreciate fires have to be lit but I think after dark and late at night is reasonable

Why do they have to be lit?

I have never had one and neither have most of my neighbours thank goodness.

Frankola · 27/02/2023 20:06

It's rude and annoying isn't it?! My ndn seem to have had about 6 in 3 weeks. They're constantly burning stuff at the moment. I had washing out this weekend, which they could see on my line and they started one. Couldn't even be arsed to WhatsApp me to let me know so I could get my washing in. Before I realised my washing was dry and stank 😒

But after dark in summer is reasonable because you have given the neighbours the whole day to enjoy their garden and get their washing dry . It's about give and take.

What about the neighbours who don't want to sleep in a smoky environment / don't want their children to sleep in a room filled with smoke, or have asthma, and they have to shut their windows during the summer months so that you can have a fire?

How is that reasonable? Sounds quite selfish to me. The give and take is all give on their part and all take on yours.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 27/02/2023 20:19

I used to love an open fire. As I've got older they have begun to make me feel physically sick and affect my breathing/make me cough.

The smell on clean washing is annoying, but the negative health effects are far worse. Late night in the summer is the worst possible time because people need their windows open to sleep. I am lucky that it's just a bit of a cough and breathing a bit harder. For some people smoke is really dangerous.

Throwncrumbs · 27/02/2023 20:21

May not be a bonfire, it might be from a neighbours wood burning stove, the smell from my neighbours lingers all day and night, it’s awful!

bloodyplanes · 27/02/2023 20:27

I don't mind it in the winter, however its the height of selfishness in the summer no matter if its day or evening. Many people leave their windows open all night if the weather is warm!

LlynTegid · 27/02/2023 20:34

If you ensure neighbours do not have washing out and not at weekends, possibly reasonable. Not otherwise.

Same here they could see washing in my line .

I wouldn't do it at night either.

Think of all that wildlife you're burning alive.

The point I'm making is if people are going to light fires light them later in the day when washing has been dryer , people have enjoyed their gardens in the sunshine . It's about a bit of give and take . The neighbours could see I had washing on the line but they didn't care .

Just stop setting fire to stuff full stop. There's no need for it.

No I'm saying it's about give and take . My washing was clearly on the line when they lit the fire . If they lit it late at night after washing had dried and we had enjoyed the sunshine in the day , I would be happy to shut my windows as the bonfire would last about an hour at. most ,

I don't like the sunshine, I use my deck in the evenings. And sleep with the windows open.

It's either anti-social or it's not.

You might. Others wouldn't. I like fresh air at night.

SwordToFlamethrower · 27/02/2023 20:59

How bizarre, fires are amazing, preferably at night though. But doesn't bother me in the slightest

But everyone is different...just because that's what you've decided is acceptable doesn't mean it is for other people too.

In the summer I can't sleep with my windows shut so I just have to accept that I might get smoke in my room.

If you choose to dry things outside you have to accept that they might come in smelling of outside.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 27/02/2023 21:05

You said "I'm fuming" could you have caused the smoky smell yourself? 😁

fastandthecurious1 · 27/02/2023 21:10

We've had a large garden job and had lots to burn, we checked with both neighbours and burnt a few loads at different times. Only had to apologise when I stupidly burnt a loads of old laminate flooring... error realised pretty quickly!!

LightSpeeds · 27/02/2023 21:11

Yep, totally thoughtless when my NDN lit a fire several nights running on the hottest days of the year (so about 36 degrees inside) forcing me to close my windows. 🤬🔥🤬

Yeah so amazing when you have to keep washing clothes again . It's expensive too .
