Thank you for dinner

Looking for an idea of what happens in other families please. Is it expected behaviour to say "Thank you for dinner" at the end of the meal to whoever cooked? I mean when it's just your household present, no guests? Or is it over the top to expect that everyday when you don't thank the person who does the dishes, or cleans the bathrooms?

We always say it - I did all the cooking when the children were still living at home but we now share the shopping and cooking and still acknowledge the effort of the one who has cooked. . My DH likes to do the clearing up ( because of his mistaken belief that he is better at loading the dishwasher 😏) and I do I thank him for that. We are polite with each other, it’s not formal or stuffy, and it’s no effort to be pleasant.

I’ve never realised what a gratitude-expressing household we were until this thread!

Family of two adults and we thank each other a lot- for cooking, for picking up the takeaway, for cleaning the kitchen, for cups of tea, for doing the shopping, for filling the hot water bottle, for picking up the dog poo etc.

Thinking about it, I think gratitude is a big part of our relationship. It’s nice.

My kids know that they need to thank whoever cooked dinner when they sit down at the table and before they start eating (they are 9 and 5). And myself or my husband thank each other too, depending on who cooked. We tend to share household chores evenly and the kids do simple things like clear plates, tidy their rooms etc, which we in turn thank them for etc.

This. Gratitude for the small things in life is so important. Also for our kids to be aware how lucky they are to have a warm home and healthy food every day.
