Me and my aunt just gone to pick the kids up in her car and there was no spaces in the school car park apart from disabled, aunt says oh ill park there in the disabled (she has a disabled badge )
I said no don't park there.
Why not ive got a disabled pass she says
yes but your not actually getting out of the car and we do actually have a few children who are disabled was my response she gave me a disgusting eye roll, Arghhh it infuriates me she think she's entitled to park where ever she damn well wants even though its no benefit to her

shes in the car...she can move if need be - especially if there are other free disabled spaces I don't see the issue infact it makes sense as frees up regular bay for others.

It is exactly the same as someone without a badge using the space.

Maybe you have never been in the position of driving to your preferred supermarket and not being able to shop because all the BB bays are occupied so you have to go home or shop else where.

Disabled people are entitled to use disabled spaces. They’re entitled to use them whether they get out of the car or not. They’re entitled to use them whether you think she needs to and whether or not you think she benefits enough. And they’re entitled to use them even if you don’t like it.

You're not supposed to use it if you aren't leaving the vehicle.

Don’t allow other people to use the badge to do something on your behalf, such as shopping or collecting something for you.
• You must never give the badge to friends or family to allow them to park for free, even if they are visiting you.
• You should not use the badge to allow non-disabled people to take advantage of the benefits while you sit in the car.

Fucking hell...the blue badge police 🙄

Who can use the badge?
The badge is for your use and benefit only. It must only be displayed if you are travelling in the vehicle as a driver or passenger, or if someone is collecting you or dropping you off and needs to park at the place where you are being collected or dropped.

It’s a criminal offence to misuse a badge. This includes people other than the badge holder taking advantage of the parking concessions provided under the scheme.

You might not think she is misusing the badge but the law says differently.

Got more time than me to care about what a random faceless stranger is doing, but have at it.

My goodness, is it so hard to comprehend what the issue is here? It would obviously not affect you, I understand. So obviously it is not an issue, just silly people fussing over nothing!

lljkk · 25/02/2023 08:04

This happens constantly where I live. I notice because the bike racks are usually next to the disabled parking. I cycle so don't care about parking spaces. Car parks up, energetic person gets out & grabs bag & dashes in to shop (or bustles outside from shop, energetically dashing around with groceries & trolley). Not so energetic looking person stays in car the whole time.

It has zero effect on me, but I find their lack of self-awareness, inconsideration for someone else who might actually need that space near the door, amusing behaviour. That said, there are almost always many empty disabled parking spaces so 99% of the time, the habit has zero impact on anyone who needs the spaces, anyway.

Yeah sure.Hmm

Wonnle · 25/02/2023 09:05

What exactly is the problem with a blue badge holder parking in a parking space for blue badge holders then ?

Wonnle · 25/02/2023 09:05

The blue badge allows a disabled person to get close to the door of a shop, if they are not getting out then they are taking up the space in exactly the same way as able bodied person taking up the space.

It blocks a space for someone who needs it.

People like you make life harder than it should be for people with disabilities. You'd soon change your views and attitude if one of your children were in a wheelchair, or even you. It can happen in a flash, like it did to me.

People like you are like you are incredibly over-dramatic. I'm not doing anything to make life harder for disability drivers, it's not me hogging parking spots.

Encourage OP to escalate the issue if you feel so passionate about it, don't waste time being the moral police to a faceless stranger on the Internet.

Never mind. Some of the replies on this thread are a perfect example of the selfish attitude of many in Society. If it does not affect them personally, then what is the problem.

YANBU. You are not supposed to park in a disabled space if you (the disabled person) are not leaving the car.

Is there anything official on this?

Im not being goady... I agree... I am BB holder and never use BB spaces unless I'm leaving the car and needing the benefit.

So many times ive had to abandon trips as there are no close BB spaces left.

But I am not allowing a non-disabled person take advantage of my badge.

I am just sat in my car having a bit of peace and quiet away from everyone

You can do that in a standard space. It's clear that the point is that you should not use the badge if you are not exiting the car or being collected by someone. You can try to stretch that if you like but it's obvious that's what the intention is.

This Scottish government site makes it even clearer. See number 4.

RachelSq · 25/02/2023 10:03

I agree, YANBU.

You’d think someone with a disability entitling them to a BB would get the idea that they’re potentially taking the benefit of the space being closer/bigger away from a person who actually has the intention of using the additional features and actually has a disability.

With the reasoning being “there’s no other spaces”, how is this fair to the disabled driver/child that now has to walk a huge distance because someone wanted to sit in the car…

YABU. If she’s got a blue badge then she is entitled to park wherever she likes.

Attitudes like this are why blue badge holders abandon vehicles in pedestrianised areas in my town! But its okay, they can park wherever they like. Including the path. Cause they got a blue badge 🙄

Yes it on the government website, which has been posted many times, and would have been in information when you applied for the badge too, it is your responsibility to know these rules as a badge holder.

Indeed even the government website states where you can and cannot park, and people can be fined.

'The Blue Badge is not a licence to park anywhere. If you park where it would cause an obstruction or danger to other road users you could be fined or receive a Penalty Charge Notice or have your vehicle removed.'

Do you need the disabled spaces?
