Inclusiveness- becoming meaningless?

In my workplace (university) all the disabled loos have been re-branded as All-gender loos. I think it's a disgrace. They are reducing capacity for those who require an accessible toilet as they are now frequently occupied by anyone and everyone so people often have to queue. When they were solely disabled access, I never saw a queue.

BluebellBlueballs · 23/02/2023 17:13

If I was desperate for a pee due to my medical condition and wet myself waiting for an able bodied transwoman/ transman/ non binary person to do their business I'd be mighty pissed off I tell you.

It's a single room. The only room that is designed to be accessible. This is a building for hundreds of staff, every floor used to have a gents - urinals and cubicals, ladies - cubicals, and a disabled loo. Now the ladies and gents are all gender neutral and the disabled is inclusive (everyone).

I appreciate as an able bodied woman it "isn't my issue", but when has turning your cheek when you see a perceived wrong against another person/group of people you don't 'belong to' been a positive route for society?

It is not clear just by looking what this sign is intended to mean, as the variety of responses here show. You seem to be saying it is to show the disabled toilets are now "gender neutral".

Given that disabled toilets were always intended for both sexes, it is redundant and confusing to put male or female signs on them.

I appreciate that not all disabilities are visible, and not all disabled people use wheelchairs, but it is common practice that disabled facilities are for whoever can't use the 'main' toilets. There is no need to change a well-understood internationally-recognised sign just for the sake of making a point about types of disability.

It is shocking, and probably illegal, to make the main male and female toilets "gender neutral" or in other words mixed-sex.

Sirzy · 23/02/2023 17:17

Making it clear that disabled toilets are for those who need them even if the disabled toilets is one thing.

making the disabled toilets the go to for everyone and anyone - without massively increasing the number of disabled toilets - is wrong.

there are many people with disabilities who can’t access disabled toilets in many places because of their lack of consideration to needs let along reducing access even more to tick a box

Sleepyblueocean · 23/02/2023 17:21

The toilet is labelled as inclusive rather than accessible. To me that indicates that anyone can use it rather than it being intended for those with disabilities who cannot use standard toilets( wheelchair users or not).

My experience, having a severely disabled child, is that inclusive doesn't exist because anything that is, is not accessible to my child.

Stillcountingbeans · 23/02/2023 17:22

And it is the opposite of inclusive to open up the disabled toilet to everyone who is able-bodied in a free-for-all.

The only inclusive and safe way to provide "gender neutral" (i.e. mixed-sex) toilets is to get the builders in to actually build them as new spaces.

MooningAtCars · 23/02/2023 17:34

The alignment doesn't say its a toilet for non binary or trans people.

The sign says its an inclusive disabled toilet.

It means it's for more than just wheelchair users who are disabled.

Many people who have every right and need to use the disabled facilities often don't feel comfortable doing so because the signage doesn't include them.

People and organisations are now putting new signage onto disabled toilets to make it more obvious that the toilets are for all appropriate medical issues, not just us wheelies.

Naturally, the issue of non disabled people using the disabled loos is something I'd love everyone to be aware of. But this post isn't about that. It's about you assuming inclusive means trans. So the post isn't useful to people like me at all.

FisherThem · 23/02/2023 17:38

It's not remotely about trans. It's the messaging that is confusing and unclear. If inclusive means open to anyone that is excluding the people who genuinely need an accessible facility. If it means open to non visible disabilities that also need the facility but are not represented by a wheelchair then it should be clear and a new icon or wording should be applied. Maybe a strap line reminding people that not all disabilities are visible. This conflating of graphics and use of 'inclusive' is confusing and pointless.

I think it’s designed to pander to GC people by moving trans or gender fluid people into the disabled toilets.

If anyone wanted to pander to GC people they would simply return to the tradition of one set of toilets for human males, one for human females, and a separate accessible one for people with physical disabilities. Trans people don't need special toilets.

It's worth looking at the sign again.

The only text reads "inclusive toilet"

The graphic is a merge of one half of the traditional male toilet sign and one half of the traditional female toilet sign, with a non traditional wheelchair user icon (the wheelchair appears to be in self propelled motion, there's no indication of including disabilities unrelated to lower body mobility).

To most people this doesn't convey any messages about invisible disabilities.

It's quite disingenuous to say the sign refers to people with invisible disabilities and that the toilet remains a disabled toilet - because this really is not what the sign says.

Almost everyone will see this sign and interpret it as meaning this toilet is for the use of absolutely anyone.
