I am so fed up of a lack of food in shops.

This has been going on for a few years but is only getting worse. I had to go to 3 supermarkets before I found some eggs. No lettuce at all, a few packs of salad tomatoes available in one supermarket, loads of empty spaces in the fruit and veg section, and in ASDA even the freezers had loads of empty spaces.

Before anyone says yes I know we will not starve, there is enough actual food. But a visit to a supermarket now is a lottery about what will be available and what is missing. And more and more I am having to visit multiple shops to get absolute basics.

So Kier Starmer could control the weather in Spain and North Africa - wow !😂

Sir Keith is going to magically grow vast quantities of tomatoes and cucumbers. What a relief and a vote winner.

Maybe money trees as well. Amazing

^That about sums it up.

Tomatoes at this time of year are crap anyway, - chewy & tasteless. I stopped buying them ages ago.

The insidious twist is being gaslit to believe that Brexit is not a major factor.
Brexit was a mistake for the majority of people in the UK and we haven't had the full impact yet. It only benefits a few but not 95% of us.

Blessedwithsunshine · 23/02/2023 08:32

Keir although rather think he suits Keith!!

Redkettle · 23/02/2023 08:32

I don't understand, aren't they having same issues in America?

maddy68 · 23/02/2023 08:33

Honestly the press /government is gas lighting the UK.

I live in spain we had summer and winter as usual. Nothing was different.

We have an abundance of fresh fruit and veg. Nothing has changed.

The EU distribution is working as normal , all EU countries have plentiful stocks.

This is solely a Brexit issue

Exactly.

Welcome to reality on a planet with 8 billion human beings. You ain't seen nothin' yet.

The bounty of the past few decades is over and won't be coming back.

Spot on @ZeldaWillTellYourFortune this is going to be a new norm.

Grow your own if you can.
Sadly I can't have chicken - I live (on a nature reserve) but we planted fruit trees 3 years ago so this year, we're hoping for fruit...! When we sell up and move, we're looking for a house with some land so I can grow my own and have chucks. Apparently they're great pets!

Brexit - everything in abundance in Europe.

It was in abundance in our independent garden centre but they probably pay the suppliers more

It’s not just the odd complaint though is it. It is a coordinated effort to constantly undermine the country.

I don't understand: we're allowed to complain individually, but if too many people complain that's a leftist plot?

I’m surprised that no one has mentioned Brexit yet as a key reason behind this, in addition to war in Ukraine and impact of bird flu on eggs.

we all know its Brexit. And we all know that those who voted for it will still jump in and try and twist and force evidence artificially to say it is not

The relentless pitiful rhetoric just keeps coming. Broken Britain on a loop by remainer leaning labour lovies. They just keep going with something new every day.

Our Tesco has had a problem with eggs for months. No problem with salad though. South coast.

I'm also south coast. Yesterday in Lidl, they had some tomatoes and peppers and they also had eggs. The only thing I ever see in Lidl and Aldi is sometimes their freezer section is quite low.

I've just started my tomato seeds off so hopefully, I will have plenty of home grown tomatoes later in the year.

Alittlebitofbreadandsomecheese · 23/02/2023 08:36

@BrieAndChilli i think everybody needs to think like post war and maybe start growing some of thier own fruit and veg where possible, eat seasonally and probably a little less!

This ^ is sound common sense.

Years ago just about every cookery book you could buy had a chart in the front showing what produce was available when. You cooked meals working around that.

Now people have become spoiled with having fresh produce all year.

What are you laughing at? If they are having same issues in Canada and us how is brexit to blame? Countless articles re food shortages all over and if not now they are on their way.

Did you read the post from the courgette grower?

Blaming Brexit is dangerous and takes the pressure off where it should be - the supermarkets and the way they expect to pay their suppliers the best part of fuck all, and we expect to pay nothing for it.

My posh independent greengrocer had piles of everything yesterday because he buys everything at a premium price

Yes, I am familiar. And they are not how the majority of the population eat, so not hugely relevant to this thread, although to get yourself into a situation where three cucumbers a day isn't enough for 5 children (only 2 of whom have processing needs?) seems very unusual.

It dosent matter what the majority of the population eats we are discussing how ridiculous it is that in 2023 in the “modern” UK food is rationed. Russians are having a good laugh of twitter as it sounds like uk has sanctioned itself as they have no problems with affordable non rationed food, cheap gas and electixity etc and minimum salary was increased from yesterday by 7 pcnt.
Beside 5 children there are also 2 parents- 7 people, lets say i and my husband eat cucumber just once a day(i eat quite a bit of cucumber too btw as i am celiac and diabetic)- so 12 meals made for 7 people with 3 cucumbers is “over the top”?

Gash no wonder Uk is the state it is with population with a mindset like this.

FatSealSmugSoup · 23/02/2023 08:35

😂 He has plenty to give it too! Nasal whining turn up the volume and expel that glorious hot air and give these poor down trodden tomato loving people a chance in life. No one ever again should be forced to buy tomato on the vine when they were counting on organic beef tomatoes. No one should ever be put through that trauma ever again.

We need a National helpline to deal with this crisis, and maybe a tomato minister to ensure it never ever happens again 🧐

I had no substitutions or missing items in my Sainsbury’s order yesterday, which included eggs, cucumber, tomatoes and red peppers. I know there are issues but I haven’t noticed them to the extent set out in the OP, so maybe it’s worse in certain areas?

Digitalhen · 23/02/2023 08:42

People like the above seem almost gleeful about it. Very disturbing

Most people still have the old Malthusian mindset; like we’re just a petri dish of yeast feeding on sugar until we run out. The world isn’t like that. Humans are not yeast. We innovate. The more we increase in numbers the more we produce. Seems paradoxical but is true.

Excellent summary and empirical evidence (couple of minutes long video) on why and how this happens (wow, and it’s good news too, can people cope with it?

No, no no they won’t do!

It needs to be a crisis. A disaster. It can’t be that you got ALL of your shopping. Every area is drying up of all tomatoes 🍅 and all fresh food perhaps even!

Valuesarekey · 23/02/2023 08:43

This is only going to get worse. That’s why it’s a CLIMATE EMERGENCY! Yes Brexit and the war are confounding it, but it’s not going to get any better any time soon.

As the planet gets hotter with more extremes of wind, rain and heat, it will get harder to grow food. Loss of biodiversity and poor soil condition due to over intensive farming will worsen the problem. We can adapt to a certain extent but to grow food soil, temperate climate and regular water are key. Not much can grow in a dessert.

We can still mitigate the worst effects.

Here’s how…

www.imperial.ac.uk/stories/climate-action/

It’s fine to have a moan, but let’s all take action to try and minimise the worst effects too eh?
