Mocking Christianity

Ihatepcos · 21/02/2023 20:45

I am so sick of people thinking it's okay to ridicule Catholicism and Christianity. This is especially apparent on Mumsnet. Every time there's a thread about religion I can't even read the replies because they're so awful.

The same doesn't seem to apply to the Muslim, Jewish, Hindu faiths etc.

If you don't believe in God that is your choice. But purposely mocking someone's faith and calling it a load of bullshit (and worse) is just not acceptable. So many people turn to faith to help them through extremely tough times in life and you are mocking the only thing that is keeping them going.

@spidereggs

I think that's white privilege to think that.

Im not aware of any Christians being attacked solely because of their religion. Although I'm sure someone will pop up with an anacdote to prove me wrong

Im sure there will be research on it. Hate speech is worse than a joke about god.

pointythings · 21/02/2023 21:50

I have no problem with individuals and their faith - I have friends across all religions and none. However, I will criticise all forms of organised religion, because organised religion is about power, fortune and control. Doesn't matter whether it's Christianity, Islam, Judaism or any of the other major and minor faiths; the moment people get together and start making rules, they also start imposing those rules on people who do not follow their faith. Keep your faith inside your home and your church and I will respect you as a person. Try to embed it in the laws of the country I live in or push it at me and I'm going to call you out. I'll be polite about it though, if you are.

I won't respect any organised religion, however. That's all about people getting together to oppress and control women, persecute LGBT people, deny people the freedom to change their beliefs, chop bits off perfect newborn baby boys and innocent young girls. That doesn't deserve anyone's respect.

Believe what you want, but you don't own morality and you should not be using religion to make law.

pointythings · 21/02/2023 21:53

@Botw1 it happens in some Muslim countries, most notably Pakistan.

Then you get Muslims being attacked in India and Myanmar, Jews being attacked pretty much everywhere, Muslims being hideously oppressed in Israel - it's all equally hideous and wrong.

Haffiana · 21/02/2023 21:54

It is all true. If you believe a man can become a woman by just deciding that they are, then anyone who disagrees can at the present time actually lose their job or be criminalised.

Of you believe in Jesus Christ on the other hand, you just get laughed at.

ArDi · 21/02/2023 21:55

KrisAkabusi · 21/02/2023 21:40

I agree but i just don't read the threads. I have wondered before why mumsnet HQ allow such hate speech and yet will police homophobia, racism etc

Being black is not a choice. Being gay is not a choice. Being religious is a choice. And if you choose to believe in a God that has absolutely zero evidence behind it, I will think less of you.

Why do you think those with faith "choose" to believe? Can you choose to believe it or not believe it at will? Neither can I.

Botw1 · 21/02/2023 21:56

@pointythings

I meant here

If it happens it doesn't happen a where near as often

But yes, obviously anyone being attached is wrong

But not comparable to being told your religion is bullshit

WeWereInParis · 21/02/2023 21:57

Anyway, I agree on the point that I don't see the same level of vitriol directed towards other faiths

Yes, Islamophobia and antisemitism include no vitriol at all.
Fair enough if you don't like your religion being mocked, but if you're in the UK you can't say with a straight face that Christianity gets more vitriol than other religions.

pointythings · 21/02/2023 22:00

@Botw1 I would never say to someone's face that their religion was bullshit, not even under severe provocation. DC2 and I ran into a proselytising Christian (this is me being polite) who addressed us and basically told DC that if only they believed in Jesus, they might not need their wheelchair. We were polite to her. Even when she refused to leave us alone. She never knew how hurt and angry we were.

It certainly affirmed both of us in our atheism, because we would never go up to another person and tell them that if only they stopped believing, their disabilities might go away.

donquixotedelamancha · 21/02/2023 22:00

I found this quite hard to read. It feels really offensive. I wonder if it would get deleted or allowed to stand in context.

Genuine question: why? Why is that worse than the posts saying Christians support pedophiles which are commonly left to stand?

Although you managed to be more hateful about 1 and 3 than 2.

Well, you play the hand you are dealt. I would argue that stating a little known fact is less 'hateful' than saying the whole thing is bobbins.

I don't personally think you can be hateful about an idea. I make no criticisms of individuals, they are as varied as any other group. Thinking all Jews/Muslims/Hindus/Christians are bad is very dumb.

@pointythings

You would have been well within your rights to say worse than that

Xenia · 21/02/2023 22:03

I don't mind the criticism although cancelling politicians like the lady in Scotland because they have a view on an issue when they can perfectly run the nation without that view stopping their work is a dreadful result of the illberal woke left intolerance of the day.

Humanwoman · 21/02/2023 22:03

Has anyone said what these so called Christian values are?

100% this

Botw1 · 21/02/2023 22:05

@Xenia

How do you know that's true?

Humanwoman · 21/02/2023 22:06

Quite the cross post there 😂

Lemonlettuce · 21/02/2023 21:43

@donquixotedelamancha sorry if I’m being thick but I’m not quite sure what the purpose of your post is….

No more than an attempt to demonstrate one can insult other religions than Christianity, despite what OP thinks.

JassyRadlett · 21/02/2023 22:09

Konfetka · 21/02/2023 20:49

Agreed. People would do well to remember that Christian values are the bedrock of civilisation as we know it.

Ahistorical (and slightly racist) nonsense.

I'll repeat what I've said on the CofE thread recently - I don't really object to people believing whatever they like, as long as they do it with humility (by which I mean doing away with the arrogance of evangelism

I do very much object to certain sects of the Christian faith having a privileged position in public life and public institutions, as I would if any other faith had reserved seats in the legislature, had its worship as the 'default' for collective worship in schools and had the state funding faith schools for their faiths that discriminate against four year olds, distort school catchments and use state funding to teach that a certain religion is true over and above all other faiths and none.

I tend to take the view that I will be very happy to leave Christianity alone when it is good enough to leave me alone.

And on Mumsnet, when people make claims about what Christianity says/does, say the Bible is literally true or make claims that are not backed up by fact, I think it's fine to challenge that.

Ceryneianhind · 21/02/2023 22:10

picklemewalnuts · 21/02/2023 21:31

Yeah but, that's not true is it?

Male, yes. Pale? Definitely not. Pale people came very late to Christianity. I don't think any of the bible was written by pale people. The cradle of Christianity is the Eastern Mediterranean. North Africa, Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Turkey...

Only if you think that the bible hasnt changed to suit old pale males.

Fair enough the originas are middle eastern, but seriously, you cannot believe that the authors were actually all from that region

I mean...The King James, or Authorised, Version of the Bible remains the most widely published text in the English language. It was the work of around 50 scholars, who were appointed in 1604 by King James (r. 1603–25), and it is dedicated to him.

In the West, the official language of the medieval Church was Latin – the language of the Roman Empire, which had adopted Christianity as its religion during the fourth century. Christians continued to be governed from Rome by the Pope during medieval times.

You dont think that somewhere along the line, they thought, ooh lets just make this a more "wife obeying husband" than "wife doing the what the fuck she feels is right"

Luke 6:22

Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you, insult you, and slander your name as evil because of the Son of Man

Tell me you are not claiming that civilisation only springs from Christianity?

Xol · 21/02/2023 22:12

Ihatepcos · 21/02/2023 20:55

Exactly the type of comment that this thread is about. Disgusting

Why "disgusting"? It's just someone holding a different opinion from yours.

Konfetka · 21/02/2023 20:49

I'm not 100% clear how people disagreeing with the political views of a politician on a political issue, and deciding not to vote for them/support them on that basis is necessarily illiberal woke left intolerance as much as it is... how politics works.

If people don't like your views on certain policy issues, and you're a politician, they probably won't vote for you. That's kind of the deal.

RenoDakota · 21/02/2023 22:14

I agree with you, OP. The ones who think they are being hilarious in talking about 'sky fairies' and the like just make themselves look like childish imbeciles.
