Mocking Christianity

Ihatepcos · 21/02/2023 20:45

I am so sick of people thinking it's okay to ridicule Catholicism and Christianity. This is especially apparent on Mumsnet. Every time there's a thread about religion I can't even read the replies because they're so awful.

The same doesn't seem to apply to the Muslim, Jewish, Hindu faiths etc.

If you don't believe in God that is your choice. But purposely mocking someone's faith and calling it a load of bullshit (and worse) is just not acceptable. So many people turn to faith to help them through extremely tough times in life and you are mocking the only thing that is keeping them going.

OP, as many have said here (but you haven’t answered them), surely forgiveness is needed here. That’s a fundamental Christian belief. Surely it doesn’t matter what others think?

Matthew 6:14
“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.”

Dacadactyl · 21/02/2023 21:22

Yes OP, I agree. You just have to rise above it.

They're not brave enough to mock Islam or Judaism.

MajorCarolDanvers · 21/02/2023 21:24

I am an equal opportunity mocker when it comes to religion.

user1493222657 · 21/02/2023 21:24

I'm with you OP. Sorry you are being given such a hard time. May your faith give you strength. I do find that Christians are openly mocked in this country but not other religions. It is disrespectful. I love that the UK is such a tolerant country, Hindu PM, possible Muslim SNP leader, but a Christian- absolutely not! Why?

electricmoccasins · 21/02/2023 21:24

Why do you care what other people think of your faith?

You have the right to believe it and say it’s true, and others have the right to not believe it and say it’s a load of bollocks.

spidereggs · 21/02/2023 21:25

Lots of people missing the point here, I agree op, you don't need to believe but you do need to be respectful.

I don't see anyone mocking Eid, or a Muslim wedding, yet here people are happy to follow Christmas, Easter, take bits of it and pick and chose why.

How many had pancakes tonight? How many taught why we do that? Where it came from.

It's just for me about mutual appreciation to the values of all

Because it's in a unique position.

Unless you're campaigning against Christian worship in schools and a state religion.

Nobody expects the Spanish inquisition do they ?

Completely agree, Christians and Christianity is mocked and denigrated and traditionally Christian values are disrespected even in a supposedly Christian country.
There seems to be plenty of people who want to fall over themselves to appease Muslim beliefs but Christianity often fails to get the same respect.

Did you miss the latest census results?

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/02/2023 21:27

I'm happy to go where the food is. I do Eid, Hanukkah, Diwali. And never get taught, just fed.

Waitymatey · 21/02/2023 21:29

This is something I have noted too @Ihatepcos.
Other religions aren’t mocked, but Christianity seems to be fair game.
Yet it is due to the faith has given this country has the values which makes it so attractive to other nationals. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Ihatepcos · 21/02/2023 21:00

It's not an idea. It's a protected characteristic.

It’s protected in the way that you are allowed to practice without discrimination- it’s not protected from others options on it. 🙄

Botw1 · 21/02/2023 21:29

In Scotland one of the potential next first ministers, so the most powerful position in the country is openly saying they are against gay marriage, having children put of wedlock and abortion because of her Christian beliefs

How is that even acceptable?

A anyone who thinks religious beliefs have any place in politics deserves to be mocked.

It's terrifying

spidereggs · 21/02/2023 21:30

@MrsTerryPratchett but do you mock?

Yolo12345 · 21/02/2023 21:30

I don't mock people who come from places like Syria, Pakistan, India etc for their religious beliefs because those people have grown up in a strongly religious culture, with very little to almost no exposure to atheism, agnostic views or indeed any other viewpoint. They also have access to limited education or an education that does no examine or challenge religious beliefs.

However, people that grow up in other parts of the world have had access to free education, books, libraries, and have grown up surrounding by alternative views and so on and so forth. Their ancestors literally fought to liberate themselves from the tyranny of strict religious doctrine and controlling social practices.... this is particularly true for the people with a Protestant heritage.

So I don't mock the above people as such, but I find it very surprising that they would express a Christian religious belief, or have strict views on gender roles, abortion, marriage etc etc

picklemewalnuts · 21/02/2023 21:31

Ceryneianhind · 21/02/2023 21:10

An also - why do people believe in a book written by old pale males?

Yeah but, that's not true is it?

Male, yes. Pale? Definitely not. Pale people came very late to Christianity. I don't think any of the bible was written by pale people. The cradle of Christianity is the Eastern Mediterranean. North Africa, Egypt, Israel, Palestine, Turkey...

Redebs · 21/02/2023 21:31

Konfetka · 21/02/2023 20:49

Agreed. People would do well to remember that Christian values are the bedrock of civilisation as we know it.

Are you serious??

Easily scared, aren't you? 🤷

Dunnoburt · 21/02/2023 21:33

Religion is the root of all evil..... not money.....sorry if that offends......each to their own as long as it's not forced upon me

Botw1 · 21/02/2023 21:33

@spidereggs

Culture and religion are interwoven

One informs the other.

Having pancakes isn't about the religion, neither are easter eggs (which come from the pagan festival Christianity ripped off anyway)

Following cultural traditions linked to religious festivals isn't mocking them anyway

MrsTerryPratchett · 21/02/2023 21:33

spidereggs · 21/02/2023 21:30

@MrsTerryPratchett but do you mock?

Yes. Because Christianity in the UK has a special legal position. While it is political, it's fair game.

Individual Christians who do nothing to anyone? Of course not.

On one hand it's definitely scary but on the other hand least people know how they think and can act accordingly. I may change my mind on that though

Botw1 · 21/02/2023 21:33

I wish I haven’t witnessed this, but sadly I have and hate crime to the Jewish and Muslim community in particular has been a lot more than mocking in social media.

spidereggs · 21/02/2023 21:34

I'm Scotland, albeit very rural. Our minister is openly gay, never thought about it really until this thread. The church is a community place, a food bank, a warm place, an Internet cafe, a baby group, a toddler group, messy play. They hold celebrations of life, with celebrants, they have coffee mornings, sales, bingo, beetle drives, alcohol. They do deliveries to people, we all help out if someone unwell, there is a prescription run, a grocery run, they teach kindness and inclusion.
