Reverse Bucket List…

What would be your reverse Bucket List? Experiences that are meant to be awesome, once in a lifetime moments… but in reality rate as anything from ‘meh’ to ‘fuck that!’

Mine is…

A spa day. Totally boring and over priced to wallow in a pond of other people’s filth.

Everest Base Camp… never seen such a pile of litter. Made me feel sad.

Christmas shopping in London. Sensory nightmare.

North West 500… how to become the most hated being on the planet, drive a camper van round the narrow lanes of north Scotland.

Designer outfit. I still looked like a mad old bat.

Fish and chips by the sea at sunset. Getting covered in the shit of psychopathies seagulls isn’t what happens on Instagram.

Also
Raw kelp carb diet healing retreat.

Surely you put things you want to do on your bucket list? So for me not having or bungee jumping but the ones I've already done I enjoyed them all. And I disagree with Paris and Sistene chapel, I liked both of them.

Stonehenge.
I took DD10 and DS8.
After standing and admiring it for a few minutes DS, in a loud voice, “When does it start.”

🤣🤣🤣😂

The St Patrick's Day parade in Boston. I was there by chance and thought it would be fun to go. It was a lot of people walking or driving slowly along a random back street nowhere near the city centre. No ticker tape. No costumes or dancing. Lots of drunk students wearing green. My colleague and I decided half an hour was enough and went to find something more interesting to see.

I didn't bother with the Sistine Chapel. As soon as we got to the Vatican it felt like a religious theme park: rosaries on sale everywhere and you instantly get pounced on by people selling tickets.

The Pantheon on the other hand...serene, exceptionally moving. Felt a genuinely holy place.

I'm not sure why you thought the St Patrick's Day parade in Boston would be a ticker tape parade?

no one thinks Christmas shopping in London is good, do they?

I'm from London and it's always been awful.

Yes! I went to one in New York and it was absolute mayhem. You had to fight to even cross the road and everywhere within a mile was absolutely heaving, so good luck getting a drink or finding somewhere with a loo. Never again!

Scuba diving on Great Barrier Reef. Poor visibility; can’t breathe through your nose so it felt like swimming underwater with a really bad cold. Husband was sick and the fish ate it. Memorable for all the wrong reasons.

Attending a wedding in Hong Kong and eating celebratory Chinese food (abalone, chicken feet and shark fin soup). Really struggled to eat more than a few mouthfuls.

Trip to see Big Buddha. Caught cable car as most picturesque way of reaching the island. Absolutely terrifying. Caught the bus back.

Skiing…anywhere! Madness. Health and safety nightmare.

1, Things on my bucket list i have done but been disappointed in

No obvious examples. Some places have been busier than ideal (e.g. Rome, Venice), but with popular places that is unavoidable i think. Still really enjoyed.

Actually, christmas markets is one example. Have been to the one it Bath but it was far too busy to enjoy.

I have been other places that have been a bit underwhelming but would never describe them as bucket list.

2 Common Bucket List things that i would have no interest in having on my list

Cruise is the main one here. We were in Santorini last year (as well as other Cyclades Islands). Our hotel room had a terrace overlooking the Caldera with a plunge pool. We were able to sit there with glass of wine watching the amazing sunset, and explored the island over our 3 days there. We could see the cruise ships down below and the people trooping off the ships in long queues like ants and heading to the same spots for sunset watching amongst huge crowds of people. It is possible to see far more on a DIY trip. I have discussed this with my parents who do enjoy cruises. They say they do not have the confidence to do a DIY trip so it suits them as a way to visit different places, so each to their own - i have no problem with the idea that others enjoy them.

Orient express. I actually looked into it recently for a big birthday, but decided i would rather have 2 extra days in Venice than 2 days sitting down on a train. I think it is possible i could change my mind on this one when older - maybe it will move to the next category.

3 Things i have on my bucket list but fear i may be disappointed in

Glastonbury or other large music festival. My plan is to go with a large group of friends so that even if it turns to be awful we can find a spot at the back and hang out with a few bottles with the festival as background music

Balloon ride. Sounds like I need to choose location carefully.

no one thinks Christmas shopping in London is good, do they?

I'm from London and it's always been awful.

Apart from the arrival of Father Christmas at Harrods, that was always good! I dunno how it is now but when my dc were small, Harrods had snow machines on the roof of the building and they'd had out bucket-loads of free sweets and have a vintage car parade & real reindeer. All for free.

WhyOhWine · 23/02/2023 19:16

Actually, Northern Lights is the other one in my category 3 - on the list but think there is high risk of disappointment

It wasn't on my bucket list but I had heard others say Hong Kong was amazing, so when through no choice I found I was going to be stuck there for 5 days alone over Christmas en route home from Australia, I was excited.

It was a thoroughly horrible experience. The place is filthy, ugly, and overcrowded. A concrete jungle.

Taxi and bus drivers pretended not to speak English when I asked for help or directions,

I went to a market and retched when I saw women nonchalantly slitting the throats of live chickens.

By day three I was sobbing in my hotel room (which had a flashing neon light right outside my window keeping me awake, by the way).

I just stayed in my room for two days 25th and 26th December waiting for the flight to get out of there.

Never did it. We used to queue up to see Father Christmas at Selfridges when I was little, but never went to Harrods. That sounds cool though. I don't think it happens any more.
