What’s your routine? I don’t have one

Skincare routine?

In my 40’s and wanting to look better, likely neglected my skin for too long. When I tell people my routine, they say it isn’t a skincare routine and that I need one 🤷🏻‍♀️

I use cleansing wipes or Dove soap and blue tin Nivea at night.
Wash face in the morning and use Nivea day cream anti wrinkles, factor 15 and Garnier bb cream anti wrinkles factor 50

What more should I be doing to have a routine? I thought I had one 🙈

Also, is it too late now to have nice skin?

That is a routine, to me! I’d definitely cut the cleansing wipes out though, so bad for your skin and the planet. I use miceller water and washable cotton pads

RobertaFirmino · 20/02/2023 21:36

You don't need a 'routine' though. All you need to do is whatever it takes to keep your skin clean and healthy. The rest is just an add-on.

What is your budget? There's no sense in people suggesting Caudalie this and Fenty that if you are of limited means. Also, what are your actual skin concerns? Do you just feel a bit 'dull' or saggy?

Havanawinter · 20/02/2023 21:42

Morning - vitamin c serum, moisturiser, SPF.

Evening - cleanse, moisturiser, mild retinoid.

That’s really all you need IMO

SunsetStrip · 20/02/2023 21:50

I have all mine in a little bag so I can just pick it up and carry it to where I am when I feel like doing it. Tonight I'm sat in front of the TV doing it. It's easier than having to stand by my dresser, when it's late and I'm tired.

Loosewomenalwayson · 20/02/2023 22:25

@Lcb123 In what way are wipes bad for the skin?
Is micellar water a cleanser?

Get yourself a nice cleaner, ditch the wipes and do a weekly mask with some AHA and BHA acids in it - not a strong one - I am using an Eve Lom I got atm but it was a present - I'll get something cheaper when it runs out.

pastypirate · 20/02/2023 22:28

Cleansing wipes give you spots they are awful things

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 20/02/2023 22:30

I think before you change anything, you really need to be clearer on what it is you want to change.

If you have wrinkles - sorry there's not a lot you can do to change that. If you have blemishes then a gentle chemical exfoliant would probably help. If you just feel like you 'should' - don't. You have a routine that works for you.

Dontfuckingsaycheese · 20/02/2023 22:31

I’m going to get some of that Garnier serum recommended on here recently. 😉 Sound like magic.

Agree

A ‘routine’ is simply that and it can be a complicated as you want or as simple as you want.

On a night I double cleanse. First with coconut oil (doesn’t suit everyone) then with just any face wash I pick up in the supermarket. Then I use Skin and me, some eye cream (not picky about which one) then about an hour later some moisturiser over the top. I am working my way through the bit from my advent calendars so, again, no particular one.

I also have a hair routine. Brush, add some leave in conditioner to the ends and a tiny bit of oil. scalp treatment, then silk cap to sleep. I oil my scalp and ends once a week.

on a morning, I wash my face. Sometimes throw on some under eye patches. Then tone, vitamin C serum (it’s a cheap one from Geek and gorgeous and fab) moisturise, eye cream, spf. If I am going to our make up on, I do it once they have all soaked in. I do a face mask once a week. Face mask depends on how my skin is and what I think it needs.

Cuppsoupmonster · 20/02/2023 22:36

I wouldn’t use wipes or an ordinary bar of soap on my skin if I’m honest, very drying.

I wear make up most days (foundation, mascara and a highlighting stick), so my routine is currently using the Soap and Glory cleansing balm to remove it before bed (massage into face then rinse off with warm water) and a cotton pad with Nivea double wear eye makeup remover to make sure my eyelashes are throughly clean. Followed by Simple rich moisturising cream. Then I go to bed and wake up with a clean face to apply the makeup.

I use St Ives grapefruit scrub in the shower once or twice a week for exfoliation.

Soapnotshowergel · 20/02/2023 22:36

Biggest difference I found was swapping from wipes to a cleanser and flannel. Must be more cost effective too than using wipes. I use reusable pads to remove eye make up. Better for my skin and the environment. I then use Skin & Me treatment at night followed by a night moisturizer (whatever is on offer in superdrug).

Daytime I like Simple face wash in the shower, moisturizer and then spf factor 50 before make up. Again, usually whatever is on offer in boots or superdrug.

Loosewomenalwayson · 20/02/2023 22:37

I think the cleanser is the issue, I’m not sure what to use? I’ve used Dove soap for years too, but I expect that’s a no no!
Ive got v dry skin recently and am starting to see lines from my nose to my mouth, those two dents at the side. Forehead is ok, smile lines (or whatever they’re called!) around the eyes have been strong since late 30’s, would an eye cream really work? Which one?
Do all these things actually work or is it largely bs?

i have been try geek and gorgeous. I find it really reasonably priced and, for me, works well.

Cuppsoupmonster · 20/02/2023 22:39

To be honest for it to be really effective you have to start looking after your skin quite young; ideally teen years when it starts to change to ‘adult’ skin. But looking after your skin will make a moderate difference at any age.

Loosewomenalwayson · 20/02/2023 22:40

@Cuppsoupmonster Ive always cleanser and moisturised but nothing else when younger

What does the vitamin c serum do please? Is that just in the mornings after washing and before moisturiser?

Cece92 · 20/02/2023 23:13

Hi @Loosewomenalwayson I think it depends on what you want to do to your skin. I would say get miscellar water and a reusable pad to cleanse your face every morning and night. I am strict my skin and it's a lot of trial and error for me over the last year. I cleanse, then I do retinol, hyalauronic acid, niaciminade, then my moisturiser, eye cream and spf (in the day) I do the same at night except I will use my miscellar water and a face wash. I exfoliate 2 times a week, and use a sheet mask once a week. Also aveeno is w great moisturised for dry skin xxx

Skyrimisveryrelaxing · 20/02/2023 23:20

throw out all that nivea. Dont use bar soap on your face. cleanse your face with a mild cleanser probably a milk one. I dont use any cleansers just very mild liquid soap and a nice flannel or sponge. Some night time moisturiser, under eye cream and some decent serums will do it. I normally get the OK beauty box to supplement my skin care routine and i normally get a bunch of clinique at christmas with the freebies as well.

angelikacpickles · 20/02/2023 23:22

I wash my face at night with a microfibre cleansing cloth and warm water and use a Cerave night moisturiser. In the morning, I wash my face in the shower with a Boots Botanicals face wash and then afterwards I use a Nip+Fab glycolic acid pad and then SPF 50.
