So disgusting. Could it cause serious illness?

Just been putting my 14month old to bed. Been a bit under weather / grouchy recently. Very smelly poohs and often not going for days. Last couple of days very horrible stinky loose / bitty poohs.

tonight Needed a new nappy. Opened it up and it was alive! Writhing wriggling . It was about to squirm out the room. Stuffed full of threadworms just exploding with life.

Most disgusting thing I've ever seen.

Obviously will treat us all asap tomorrow (must have got from older siblings) but apart from being another level gross, could this be causing big health issues? Anything else I should check in her health?

As far as I know not if you treat it. However look up nhs advice i do know you need to wash all bedding and towels and not share them.

Patchworksack · 19/02/2023 19:50

Poor you! 🤢You might need to see GP - from what I remember the pharmacy medicine is not for under two years old. I’m sure you will all be fine once treated.

Wasywasydoodah · 19/02/2023 19:51

pro won’t be causing any health issues. She might be grouchy from having a sore/itchy bum from where they lay eggs on the skin. Completely gross but really normal. You need to wash everything and personally i always do the 2 doses at 2 weeks apart.

Wasywasydoodah · 19/02/2023 19:51

Prob not pro

Bucketheadbucketbum · 19/02/2023 19:58

Thanks so much. Probably one of the most disturbing disgusting things to have ever happened to me.

Looked like a bucket of live bait for fishing, smelt like a methane explosion.

Feel like I need to have a 200 oC shower and scrub

Thick layer of Vaseline on her bum. They can’t lay in it as eggs don’t stick then Ovex tomorrow.

Hankunamatata · 19/02/2023 20:01

You should be fine. Just lots of bedding, towel, clothes washing ahead and hoovering. Hate the blooming things but least house gets a deep clean.

nutellalover23 · 19/02/2023 20:02

I know how u feel. Exact thing happend with me too this week. I nearly collapsed when I seen his nappy and took me days to work out what was wrong. We did get medicine and he seems ok now...but I feel mentally disturbed !!

Rainallnight · 19/02/2023 20:04

If your kid isn’t doing a poo for days, go to the doctor.

x2boys · 19/02/2023 20:07

Oh we had this when my youngest was at nursery hes, severely autistic so was still putting everything in his mouth at 3+ it's gross but easily treated ,you can get something from the chemist that treats the who!e family rod
apparently they do come out at night ( tmi) so.your baby might wake up.distressed with them ,honestly though the treatment works really we ll

Eastereggsboxedupready · 19/02/2023 20:08

Good preparation for dealing with nits in the future op.
Also make your flesh creep.

PurpleWisteria1 · 19/02/2023 20:09

I’m not sure the pharmacy will give you ovex for under 2 so you might need to see the doctor who will give you something.
Its gross but easily treatable - need to do at least 2 doses though

x2boys · 19/02/2023 20:18

I doubt there is any major health issues but if she's struggling with her bowels.you do need to.see the Gp.she maybe constipated

Thabk you. Don't have vaseline could I use sudocrem as substitute?

OP posts:
Redebs · 19/02/2023 20:24

Threadworms don't cause constipation and they don't appear like that in the poo.
You need to see a doctor straight away. It's likely a different worm and some can be dangerous. Take along a double-bagged nappy in case a sample is needed.

AngelinaFibres · 19/02/2023 20:24

You'll need to treat everyone at home. Get a spare pack/ bottle so you can treat immediately when it happens again....which it will

Second the advice for thick layer of cream/Vaseline to stop them laying eggs / spreading in the night. Especially with girls as they can get into the vagina and that's painful - my dd had them before and was in agony, found a couple wriggling in there Shock

LouLou198 · 19/02/2023 20:45

@Bucketheadbucketbum sudocrem will be fine. I remember being horrified when dd 1 had them for the first time. Both dc had them a few times when in reception at school- no long term issues. Wash towels/bedding at a high heat, tumble dry off you can. Damp dust and vacuum everywhere, wipe down toys. Soft toys either wash or put in a bin bag and don't touch for 2 weeks. Treat all the family with Ovex, (get GP advice for baby), treat everyone again in 2 weeks. Encourage good hand washing in your older child, especially before meal times. Make sure finger nails are short and fingers kept out of mouths. I always have a pack of Ovex in just in case now, and nit lotion!

Rinkydinkydoodle · 19/02/2023 20:46

8y.o DN got thread-worms and when Ds told her she had hysterics, couldn’t be calmed down. Turned out she’d seen a live tapeworm being removed from a dog’s anus online and thought she had a heap of them thronging round her pyjama bottoms at night😂

Bagpuss2022 · 19/02/2023 20:53

Oh no they are horrid blighters non of my 3 DC have had them but I got them twice working in a nursery despite really good hand hygiene
got a itchy bottom now thinking of it

Rainallnight · 19/02/2023 21:58

I’m going to re-phrase my post. Why didn’t you take her to the doctor?

If the symptoms really are as alarming as described, this is definitely more serious than threadworm. But suggesting taking the baby to the doctor gets scorn on here.
Yesterday, posters were advising a new mum on another thread that she had a bit of a stiff shoulder and not to bother A&E, when it turned out to be a pulmonary embolism.
