So disgusting. Could it cause serious illness?

Just been putting my 14month old to bed. Been a bit under weather / grouchy recently. Very smelly poohs and often not going for days. Last couple of days very horrible stinky loose / bitty poohs.

tonight Needed a new nappy. Opened it up and it was alive! Writhing wriggling . It was about to squirm out the room. Stuffed full of threadworms just exploding with life.

Most disgusting thing I've ever seen.

Obviously will treat us all asap tomorrow (must have got from older siblings) but apart from being another level gross, could this be causing big health issues? Anything else I should check in her health?

I think I’d be taking her to the drs - thread worms are tiny .. they look like pieces of white cotton .. hence the name

Ponoka7 · 20/02/2023 00:10

Aside from the worms, she has constipation. The dry, bitty, really stinky is old pooh. Doctors are reluctant to treat. How is her diet and fluid intake? You can't really start to think about the constipation until the worms are treated.

Threadworms don't usually appear like that. Given the other symptoms as well I would be taking to Dr's. Are you sure they aren't fly larvae for example? Threadworms are tiny, crawl out at night generally. You don't see loads of them in poo (usually).

Said with the authority of someone who doesn’t really know what they are talking about

Either OP is exaggerating, or this is a potentially serious parasitic infection. I'm not guessing which, because I haven't seen the results of stool exam.
She needs to see a doctor to get a proper test.
Threadworm doesn't cause smell, constipation, unwellness and a writhing mass in a nappy.

Itisbetter · 20/02/2023 00:18

They literally look like white cotton thread.

Karen398 · 20/02/2023 00:39

Threadworms can appear like this in nappies especially if the poo is loose.

Second the advice for thick layer of cream/Vaseline to stop them laying eggs / spreading in the night. Especially with girls as they can get into the vagina and that's painful - my dd had them before and was in agony, found a couple wriggling in there Shock

My DD had them last year. Kept waking at night in agony crying and in terrible pain with her bum. Couldn't see a thing. I read they can cause pain so did Ovex on us all. Next night, I caught one wriggling out of her vagina! It was the only one I saw. Horrible things!

KickHimInTheCrotch · 20/02/2023 06:20

My DC have had worms quite a few times but I've never seen one. Tbh I don't go looking for them. First sign of an itchy bum at bedtime and everyone gets an ovex, sheets and towels in the wash next day. Seems to sort it. Not had them for a while actually come to think of it so I hope I haven't jinxed it!

JammiDodgers · 20/02/2023 06:24

Whole family need treating and whole
house needs a deep clean: they are incredibly itchy and as they itch so she will
be scratching herself. Eggs will be under her fingernails and she touches everything… you get the point.

Hence why everyone needs treating and you need to do a deep clean ( wash bedding / give her a separate towel etc)

Good luck!

I would take the baby to the doctor, there are other longish parasitical worms that affect humans- roundworm and hookworm. If the wriggling mass looked like large grains of rice, then that would be tapeworm.

The days of constipation followed by loose poo is also not normal and needs seeing.

Ah no, your poor family.

Doctors first thing when they open.

I think the reason people don’t immediately go to the doctors (to answer some of the pp) is that in some parts of the country it is virtually impossible to do so…

True, but babies are usually prioritised.

See a doctor! Especially with young children
