to think everyone knows you don't flush train toilets whilst train is standing in a station?

I've had to get multiple long distance trains this last week and on several journeys have had to stand in corridors near the toilets as it's been so busy. For various reasons I've not really used trains in about 20 years!

I honestly thought it was common knowledge that you don't flush train toilets whilst at a station? Or has that changed in the last 20 years?

It's like people are actually waiting for the train to stop moving to get out of their seats and head for the loo - over and over at station after station Confused

@KindlyKanga I don’t think they do drop it on purpose, it gets dealt with when the plane lands. However, it has happened by accident before 🤣

Oh my word! "I know a number of incidents happen every year with frozen sewage from planes, but this wasn't frozen and his whole garden was splattered in a very unpleasant way," she said.

Every year! Not sure freezing it helps much either - so it is true!

Surely there would be a sign on the toilet door saying don't flush at station or some warning. I've done many long journeys on train and never been made aware of not flushing.

BMW6 · 19/02/2023 18:42

The big clue is in the toilet cubicle. Its been many many years since I saw the obvious signs asking passengers not to flush while train is in a station.

No sign - flush

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/02/2023 18:43

Yes it goes into a tank, unlike aeroplanes where they jettison it over disagreeable countries, depending how the pilot feels - I think that's what happens anyway.

Inkypinkee · 19/02/2023 18:46

You used to be able to work out where to stand on the platform so the train stopped with the door right in your face if you waited near by the pile of poo and loo roll. But no such signs these days, I think it all goes in a tank.

userxx · 19/02/2023 18:49

I won't go to the toilet on a plane as someone told me my intestines would be sucked out when I flush 🤷‍♂️

Clarabell77 · 19/02/2023 18:52

I remember this too.

MoreSleepPleasee · 19/02/2023 18:25

Never heard this in my life. Surely you just go when you want to.

you must be young @MoreSleepPleasee Grin

There used to be signs in the bathroom saying you must not flush when the train is standing in the station.

On long distances buses you cannot use the loo when it is stationary or indeed when nearing a bus station. One passenger was tellt aff by our lovely driver on the Glasgow-London bus .

Just thought I throw this on there

So they dump it in the road?!

It is quite powerful

Vloader23 · 19/02/2023 18:57

Most (almost all) are CET these days so no problem with flushing anywhere

CloudPop · 19/02/2023 18:57

"Please refrain from urination when the train is in a station "

YesYou · 19/02/2023 19:01

@Vloader23 not merseyrail or east mids

Cocobutt · 19/02/2023 19:05

I try and avoid using the toilet at a station as I’m always worried someone’s going to nick my seat.

PatientlyWaiting21 · 19/02/2023 19:08

News to me. What’s the reason?

Hedjwitch · 19/02/2023 19:09

As kids we used to recite:
Gentlemen must please refrain
From doing the toilet while the train
Is standing at the station .
That means you!

As hobos riding underneath
Will get it in the eyes and teeth
And they dont like it a bit
And neither would you!

Usually use of the term "most" means there are some exceptions

ReignBeauDash · 19/02/2023 18:18

Someone will come and tell me now that trains have tanks for sewage these days so it doesn't matter, won't they. Off to actually google it!

Yes exactly right. All goes into a tank instead of onto the track, so toilets can be used in stations now.

DulcetTones · 19/02/2023 19:12

It would never have occurred to me that trains would just dump it out on the tracks... 😱

Sorry I did have to giggle at "he's just sort of had to take it on the chin"

😆

💩

DillDanding · 19/02/2023 19:15

I was sitting on a train at a platform with my son a few weeks ago. He kindly pointed out to me a pile of toilet paper and shit on the track which I then couldn’t un-see. So it’s clearly still a thing in some places

YesYou · 19/02/2023 19:17

"Usually use of the term "most" means there are some exceptions"

🙄 well "most" of the trains on the lines I mentioned don't. Your statement that there's "no problem flushing anywhere" depends on who you're talking to and where they are travelling.

Ireallycantthinkofagoodone · 19/02/2023 19:20

lessthanathirdofanacre · 19/02/2023 18:29

You have cheered me up by reminding me of the song: "All passengers will please refrain from flushing toilets while the train is standing in the station, la la la. While the train is in the station, we encourage constipation. . ." (I don't remember the rest of the words, alas.) 😀

I remember one - “Please refrain from urination while the train is in the station, have respect for railway property…….” That’s all I know, but it sounds like part of the same ditty.

OntarioBagnet · 19/02/2023 19:23

We had Pacer trains on our local line until two years ago and all the poo, etc came straight out onto the track. The train track runs through our village and often visible turds on the line!
