To think it is time to extend Sunday opening hours?

It really is time for the restrictive Sunday trading hours to be lifted. The archaic laws have not kept up with modern society.

Sunday may traditionally have been a family day but there have been a lot of changes since then. People are in increasingly different family set ups. The working hours have changed for a lot of people and being able to shop on a Sunday morning would improve things greatly. It would help trade for businesses too.

Sunday is now a major shopping day and the hours need to reflect this.

People can still shop on a Sunday morning. Just later in the morning.

everything doesn’t need to be 24/7 sometimes having things a bit slower is good.

watchfulwishes · 19/02/2023 09:34

No, I disagree. The value of a different rhythm to Sundays is real. If you make everything just a uniform capitalist experience it all gets a bit depressing.

WeCome1 · 19/02/2023 09:34

They already are in Scotland ☺️

itsjustnotok · 19/02/2023 09:34

@Sundayopeningplease totally disagree. I don’t understand how people can’t organise themselves over 6 days. The 7th gives an opportunity to pick up bits but I guess it depends on what it is you want open? There aren’t necessarily the staff to make this happen. It sounds like people just want 24/7 convenience. I study, work and have kids and can manage.

eighteenthirteen1 · 19/02/2023 09:35

Opening at 11 really annoys me. I have two children under 5, so I've been up 5 hours before the shops are open!

Grizzledstrawberry · 19/02/2023 09:35

I think they should be shut all day, like it was years ago, let everyone have a day off (although I'm fully aware lots of jobs can't just shut for a day)

eighteenthirteen1 · 19/02/2023 09:35

But I should've leave present buying to the day of the party...

Nimbostratus100 · 19/02/2023 09:37

totally disagree

people can just plan better, not demand more opening hours

In fact, time to cut back more, I would say.

It is a stupid unnecessary extra cost, this expectation on massively long opening hours, people dont buy more, just spread out their buying, so it costs businesses hugely more, and the costs are passed on to us

Time for shops to start shortening their hours

OoooohMatron · 19/02/2023 09:37

What can't you get in the 5 hours the shops are open on Sunday?

Slimjimtobe · 19/02/2023 09:38

It’s 1pm until 6pm in Northern Ireland

Ponoka7 · 19/02/2023 09:39

We'd have to address the issue of transport not starting until 8 or even later on a Sunday. Retailers are still only offering 16 hours, Tesco/Iceland even less. Most workers have to get taxis to get to work on a bank holiday, throw in Sundays and they won't be able to afford to get there. Staff don't go in as the shop opens, they can be in two hours before. During Covid I thought that it was time to close Boxing and NYD, to give them a break. With zero hours contracts and really unfair working conditions, it can be a shit job as it is. So I think that you are BU.

megletthesecond · 19/02/2023 09:39

Yabu. I'd have them closed again. We need to slow down for 24hrs.

uhOhOP · 19/02/2023 09:39

No!

My mummy talks about when shops closed early on Wednesday. I want that to come back, not more opportunity for shopping.

Beachdreams40 · 19/02/2023 09:39

I think they should be closed on a Sunday

Swiftswatch · 19/02/2023 09:39

I agree.
If you want a slower Sunday then have it, you don’t need to block anyone else from doing their bloody food shop because you want a family morning.
But Sunday hours are particularly restrictive where I am.

OoooohMatron · 19/02/2023 09:37

I would prefer shops to open at 9 as normal but close earlier. 11 is far too late when you have small children but that's my problem

Yes, everything should be shut on Sunday like the old days. So you best get off MN then, making the staff come in and run the site instead of having a day off - how heartless of you. Wink

There's so many other things you can do with under 5s. Here shops at 10 and close at 4. That's more than enough time on a Sunday.

Whatsuppdr · 19/02/2023 09:39

I disagree. I miss a slower pace of life and would quite like half day closing on Wednesday to come back too

eighteenthirteen1 · 19/02/2023 09:40

I need to buy a birthday present for this afternoon.

Would have preferred to go at 9 to get it. No big deal. Just annoying.

MeMyCatsAndMyBooks · 19/02/2023 09:40

YABU. The (most) supermarkets are usually open 24 hours during the rest of the week. Think you'll survive not shopping for 5 hours on a Sunday morning.

So why can't you do your food shop between 11am and 4pm?

MarvelMrs · 19/02/2023 09:41

No. Life needs to have boundaries. And there are six other days of the week to shop. Along with 24 hrs shopping on those six days plus Amazon Prime depending on how desperate you are. Retail workers do not need longer Sunday working hours.

You realise plenty of people actually want to work on a weekend, not least for childcare issues.

Ours never went back to 24 hours after covid 6 am to 11pm now.
