To ask why you went dairy free for health reasons? Apart from vegans.

I've recently gone dairy free for my sinuses as I've heard, often, that this can help.

Why did you if not for veganism? Has it helped?

Also what foods do you recommend? I haven't tried cheese yet. I bloody love it but might have to forgo? I've not heard much positivity about it?

I've actually noticed a difference. I don't know if it's placebo but I've suffered years and had no help from gps and specialists. I've had tests but nothing to help. I've tried everything.

Looking forward to hearing if it's helped anyone else?

I didn't really need votes. If anyone thinks I'm being unreasonable for asking then that's champion 🤣

It started because I found that cheese was causing migraine. I have sinus problems and cutting out dairy has worked.

The only half decent cheese in my experience is Sheese.

Alpro and Oatly have a good range of yoghurt, cream, etc

MyCatIsAnnoyinglyCute · 18/02/2023 12:51

One of my DC is dairy free due to allergies. I have to be honest vegan cheese is grim but the best one we’ve found is the Applewood smoked cheese that you can buy in the supermarket.

Flora plant life butter is good as is Violife soft cheese. I buy the Alpro no sugar oat milk as all the rest have a large amount of sugar in that I don’t want my DC to have. The Barista version is good in coffee.

My DC are overjoyed with the newly released vegan Kit Kats!

Thank you. I saw sheese in ASDA I'll try it. I bought asda's smoked cheese but haven't tried it yet.

I use oat milk but have been having black coffee. I bought some yogurt but I can taste the coconut. It's supposed to be plain?

I'm glad it's helping you.

I went dairy free because I have CMPA, developed in menopause. Not really a choice, I get anaphylaxis going into a M&S food hall. It is a pain in the arse as dairy is in so much food, and so much more is contaminated.

Most adults don't have a dairy allergy but many have lactose intolerance. Try lactose free for a week, it will probably help.

Kit Kats!!! 😳 That's fab.

That applewood cheese is the one I have in the fridge.

A colleague of mine cut out dairy, initially just for the hay-fever season, as she found that she was needing stronger medication every year when the pollen started flying about. It certainly worked for her.
It might be worth finding out what the trigger is before taking more drastic steps with restricting food,

Icanbetherubberband · 18/02/2023 13:01

It might be worth experimenting with lactose free cheese, the harder the cheese the lower the lactose also so parmesan is better than cheddar, cheddar is better than Brie, Brie is better than cream cheese etc.

WhatCanWeDoNext · 18/02/2023 13:02

Morrisons oat milk is horrible, as is Aldi’s - both sort of grainy.

I like Tesco and Sainsbury’s though. Never tried Asda.

I’m lactose intolerant but at a level that means I can cope with cheese, etc when it is thoroughly cooked (eg cheese scone). Same with eggs.

Uncooked/lightly cooked milk, cream, cheese etc make me very ill with stomach upset, etc but also leave me completely wiped out for a few days (exhausted, can’t think straight, etc). Sometimes my yearning for cream cakes convinces me that it’s worth it for a treat. It isn’t.

Rattlethestars · 18/02/2023 13:04

I went dairy free as I noticed I was having issues with food so it was mostly trial and error. It started with lactose but now I can't eat any dairy at all. On the times I've slipped up, my eczema flares up badly.
I'm also intolerant to soya and gluten so that's also super fun!

I use Alpro Almond No Sugars for porridge, Glebe Farm oat milk (the creamy and enriched one) for tea and coconut yoghurt. I don't bother with cheese or other subs because they're expensive and disgusting.

CuriousMama · 18/02/2023 13:06

My bowel movements are perfect it's not my digestion. It's the inflammation that's the problem. And the effect on mucus. I'm only trying this for a few weeks.

no idea it was linked to migraine but I've had less since swapping! thanks for this titbit!

This is me. I had bad swelling and stomach pains after having milk, switched to lacto free and it's been fine since.

mamabear715 · 18/02/2023 13:08

@WhatCanWeDoNext Pretty much the same.. although milk is worse than cheese, I gave milk up a long time ago.
I agree re the cream cakes.. :-(

Can the ladies with sinus problems offer any help, please? I have jaw / cheekbones / gums / ear / headache pains.. GP wouldn't give me any more antibiotics, which did the trick but it came back.. have got some nose spray thing now which is not helping & am scoffing co-codamol to cope with the pain.. and yes, the GP did ask about the dentist, & I have been, all fine.. thank you.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 18/02/2023 13:08

Aldi some times has Pro Natur oat milk which is really good, their standard one is sad.

Skimmed milk is 5% sugar, Rebel Kitchen Chocolate Hazelnut Mylk Shake is only 5.4% so I can have mocha whenever I want Grin

All coconut yogurt tastes of coconut, IMO. I use oat kefir, but I know some people hate the taste of it.

Springintoabetterlife · 18/02/2023 13:09

Breast feed child had cmpa.

Icanbetherubberband · 18/02/2023 13:11

I gave up dairy for health reasons, and those health reasons got worse. Turns out it was a problem with my gut bacteria, and eating live yoghurt is part of the cure not part of the problem. Now that my gut Bacteria is better, I can eat all dairy again without problem, but in the middle I found that hard cheese, live yoghurt, and lactose free options helped me heal, alongside a lot of pre and probiotic foods. Have you had a stool test done?

Have you been checked for TMJ? I had similar problems and went to an osteopath and he helped with mine.

There's a myth that cheese and chocolate make it worse. In my case it's true

😆I know your pain.
This is why it is best to have medical advise when doing exclusion diets.

MrsMonkeyBear · 18/02/2023 13:18

I'm lactose intolerant and spend 13 out of 14 days completely dairy free and then I allow myself a "cheese" day. I don't feel too bad after, but definitely not as good as my dairy free days. I also cant stand fake cheese.

I get alpro Yogurts, drink alpro barista coconut or almond (oat milk makes me bloated.) You need to check for hidden dairy in things too. A lot of crisps use whey powder as a flavour enhancer/carrier.

DrSalome · 18/02/2023 13:27

Severe milk intolerance. That was 20 years ago. Huge huge improvement. The landscape of dairy free alternatives is unrecognisable since then and your only issue is likely to be deciding what to go for. Cheese has never ( imho) been fully replicated and most of them are ultra processed and very fatty - avoid. Unless you want to pay a fortune for delicious nut cheese camemberts and things. Good luck. Hope it helps !

Scrobbler · 18/02/2023 13:31

My daughter is lactose intolerant and had terrible stomach pain, cramps, weight loss and vomiting until she found out what was causing it. She has lactose free milk and cheese now, and takes lactase tablets if she really wants to eat dairy. The difference to her health has been amazing.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 18/02/2023 13:53

Soya yoghurt has a more neutral flavour than the coconut ones, but the texture isn't quite as good.

Oatly whippable cream is excellent - tiny cartons but whips up to a huge volume and holds well.

The cashew nut cheeses don't melt like the more modern types, but generally have a better flavour. Of the supermarket melting ones, Sheese and Applewood smoked are OK. Violife Greek comes closest to actually like the cheese equivalent.
