To ask why you went dairy free for health reasons? Apart from vegans.

I've recently gone dairy free for my sinuses as I've heard, often, that this can help.

Why did you if not for veganism? Has it helped?

Also what foods do you recommend? I haven't tried cheese yet. I bloody love it but might have to forgo? I've not heard much positivity about it?

I've actually noticed a difference. I don't know if it's placebo but I've suffered years and had no help from gps and specialists. I've had tests but nothing to help. I've tried everything.

Looking forward to hearing if it's helped anyone else?

I’ve been dairy free for nearly twenty years as I find my arthritis subsides to the point of needing no painkillers or nsaids. I ate cheese this Christmas and felt my inflamed joints for a month afterwards.

Apart from allergies, I really don't think giving up dairy would "cure" anything.
Unless someone knows more on the topic - I haven't seen any scientific research backing up the claims of dairy harm.

I can't drink a whole glass of milk or eat an ice-cream without some digestion upset and that develops in many adults as we age. I'm OK with cheese, yoghurts, some milk in coffee...

I gave up dairy for a while to see if that could help with my adult acne. Nope. Anti-androgens helped.

No harm in giving up though, as long as the calcium is taken care of. I just don't think it's the scapegoat it's made out to be on social media.

Thank you @Doowop1919 that is what I meant, I am lactose intolerant and also can’t have eggs. My tolerance for both is a similar level.

QueenCamilla · 18/02/2023 17:33

Regarding mucous membranes - I have however seen extensive research that gut/eye/nose/genital membranes could equally benefit from healthy gut microbiome. So I'd rather concentrate on pro-biotics (the good bacteria), pre-biotics(the food for the good bacteria) and maybe some supplements of both.

I went vegan for the animals BUT saw additional health benefits I didn’t expect:

hair started growing faster and thicker and finally past my shoulders!
stomach felt happier somehow
skin and nails better
sense of smell massively improved
only light/thin/clear phlegm with colds (used to have thick green stuff, really bad every time)

suspect I had a mild dairy allergy I didn’t know about….

AdventFridgeOfShame · 18/02/2023 17:39

Two thirds of post weaning humans are lactose intolerant. The highest concentration of lactose tolerant people is seen in northern Europe.
The level of intolerance varies from person to person, as this thread has shown.

I cant have large amounts if dairy as otherwise I end up with constant headaches/migraines. so I'll have milk in a cup of tea but can't have milk in cereal, a latte or an ice cream

Have you considered goats cheese and sheeps cheese. I can't explain why but they are different to cows milk in terms of the effect they have

They have less lactose. I'm fine with goats cheese but cows makes me unwell.

I'm mostly dairy free as I developed lactose intolerance in my 20s after bad food poisoning.

For cheese I eat goat cheese. Vegan cheese is pretty disgusting.

I prefer coconut yoghurt to soya but it's madly calorific.

I've found Oatly Barista to be the best milk substitute.

BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn · 18/02/2023 20:07

They have less lactose.

And different proteins, so may not be a trigger for an allergy to the cow type of proteins.

BlueberryBuffin · 18/02/2023 20:45

@eurochick and @BinturongsSmellOfPopcorn

Thank you. I was so tired my brain was not working!

Straycatblue · 18/02/2023 20:46

Stopped drinking cows milk as realised it was causing my acne - big under the skin painful spots

Apparently loads of people with same issue & its due to the different hormones cows milk contains = it's from a breastfeeding cow so full of hormones that make the cow lactate & because it's designed for growing baby cows it's also got growth hormones in it

Now if I accidentally eat something containing cows milk - within 24hrs my acne returns

(However i can tolerate small amounts ie in a choc bar thank goodness! Not sure if it's do with how it's treated)

I cocked up yesterday. Went out for a meal with the family and had some ice cream. I had a weird rumbling feeling inside last night and head pressure. I eventually managed to get to sleep but it was worrying. Still feeling it now. I'm hoping if I get back on track it'll settle down. Me and Dh are away tonight. 3 course meal is included in the stay so I'll have to be careful.

I managed to eat dairy free at the hotel. They had every menu item marked if df or gf.
I had some crisps with my drink in the bar. Quite a few had milk in them. Luckily I read the labels.
