Muddy paws dog jumped on me on walk, WWYD?

I was walking across a park yesterday and two spaniels bounded towards me about 50 yards away from their owner. I could tell they were going to try and jump up at me so I avoided eye contact with them and told my dd to do the same.

Unfortunately one still did jump up at me multiple times and left mud on my clean trousers.

I shouted at the owner to please keep her dogs under control as one had got mud on my trousers. Not in an aggressive or rude tone though.

In my opinion if you don't have sufficient control over your dog to stop them doing this they need to be kept on a lead in public. The owner didn't seem very bothered and I think there is zero chance of her preventing this happening another time to someone else or possibly even to me again. I feel pretty annoyed about it.

I think there are some owners who either don't think it's a problem when their dogs jump up at strangers or who just don't care.

What would you do if this happened to you?

I personally would be happy to receive muddy water water pistol as revenge and/or my and pooches' photo on a wanted poster if it would make the party concerned feel vindicated.

You’ll be lucky if it’s just a water pistol. Someone one day is going to punch your dog in the face of you do not control it.

Yes it does start with S. Some of his techniques I didn’t find bad but a few are so rubbish and I wonder how his attitude affects dog owners entitlement.

Neither me nor my children will approach dogs at all. We treat them with stranger danger. You wouldn’t walk up to someone you don’t know and touch them or talk to them so why would you with a dog. We had a Labrador yesterday bound over from no where and snatch our hiking stick out of my sons hand. Owner was just like hmmm it happens. It shouldn’t though, control the thing.

Jesus Christ most of the dog owners on this thread are psychopathic. It is never ever ok and illegal for your dog to bound to to.someone never mind touch them. It means your dog is out of control. If it jumped at someone that is assault and if it jumped at me I'd be kicking out at its chest to try and defend myself, if it killed your dog tough shit and the law is on my side. Get a grip! Dogs are animals that need to be controlled by law. It is never ever acceptable to say just being friendly, they can't be friendly they are not humans.

Psychopathic you say...... really?

Please share a link to the law that says that if my dog sniffs your crotch (so touching you), then I am committing an illegal act.

The vast majority of dogs who jump up on strangers are puppies/adolescents. They are still learning and everything out in the world is so exciting.

rogueone · 20/02/2023 20:01

XenoBitch and that is why they should be on a lead until they dont jump up and annoy folks who dont want them near them. They shouldnt be off lead until you have trained them appropriately

They have to be off lead sometimes as part of their training. Sometimes the dog will get it wrong, like any human who is learning something.

rogueone · 20/02/2023 21:06

MissyB1 agree but as a fellow dog owner you train in your home, garden and quiet areas until recall is good, You dont pop down to the local busy park and expect folks to know your dog is in training

Well, please keep young children at home until they can learn not to scream in public, or approach strangers with sticky fingers.

rogueone · 20/02/2023 21:10

and young humans rarely bound over to a human and knock them over whilst a parent laughs about how friendly they are. Young children tend to be smaller than the large bounding off lead dog who knocks them over or steals their ice cream, its laughable the excuses on this thread and the shock that kids who when tiny experienced being knocked over are scare...why dont you as an adult see what it is like having a 6ft 5 man run at you and push you over

I always think about the size difference and what it must feel like to have a dog bound at you as a small child

rogueone · 20/02/2023 21:12

XenoBitch oh what nonsense, i have never ever had a small child run at me with grubby fingers, had plenty of screaming kids as that is normal as part of them developing. You are a prime example of a poor dog owner who resorts to comparing dogs to kids when it is not comparable.

PeanutButterSmoothie · 20/02/2023 21:12

Definitely a police matter.

Lucky you. I have had kids climb about under my table in cafes, try to take my food, also just screaming in general. Also saw their parents change nappies on tables in full view of people eating. Also had a young kid go to whack my dog on the head, when she was just minding her own business.
Young dogs jumping up is also part of them developing, just like all of the behaviour of the kids I mentioned.
But yes, I am a poor dog owner because I don't want hand shaped chocolate mess on my knees.

Is that a joke? You can't even get the police to take rape seriously.

FallSpringing · 20/02/2023 21:24

Some people are so bloody joyless - it's a little bit of mud off a dogs paw, it's a natural substance from the earth, god forbid we come into contact with anything beyond the realm of endless shopping, concrete pavements and cheap polyester.

No, I'm deadly serious. That dog has committed assault.

And how do people get convicted of the same? There has to be an element of maliciousness. A young dog who is excited does not really fall under that.
What is the punishment? Hang them?
Believe it or not, animals used to get hung for "crimes".

XenoBitch · 20/02/2023 22:00

And if a dog is guilty of assault for leaving a mudding paw print, then a toddler is guilty of the same for leaving chocolate on someone.
Both batshit reasons to get the cops involved, when there are actual real crimes happening.

The punishment would have to be life imprisonment with no possibility of a walk.

OrangeKettle · 20/02/2023 22:28

I’d have it my own back and wiped my muddy feet on the dog.

OrangeKettle · 20/02/2023 22:29

Got.

Damn the lack of an edit button. And my fat fingers.

You really are a poor dog owner from these comments.

How many children are killed a year by other children’s bites? Dogs are dangerous animals when untrained. Let’s stop pretending that wild animals, the majority of which are untrained with stupid indulgent owners, are comparable to children.

You have a serious responsibility and an animal which could cause real harm, as statistics show. Control it in public.

You’re wrong on this count too I’m afraid. Dogs do still get punished. By being put to sleep. Owners get prosecuted. As is correct when failing to control a dangerous animal.

If a dog jumped at a sheep, a farmer is entitled to shoot it. You need to reconsider your stance if you want to be a responsible dog owner.

I've never had children with sticky fingers molesting me at random! On the other hand dogs leaping up, sniffing crotches or snapping at one is a routine hazard of a country walk. Keep dogs on a lead in public places. If you haven't got a large garden or paddock for your dog to run loose maybe don't have a canine companion!
