Muddy paws dog jumped on me on walk, WWYD?

I was walking across a park yesterday and two spaniels bounded towards me about 50 yards away from their owner. I could tell they were going to try and jump up at me so I avoided eye contact with them and told my dd to do the same.

Unfortunately one still did jump up at me multiple times and left mud on my clean trousers.

I shouted at the owner to please keep her dogs under control as one had got mud on my trousers. Not in an aggressive or rude tone though.

In my opinion if you don't have sufficient control over your dog to stop them doing this they need to be kept on a lead in public. The owner didn't seem very bothered and I think there is zero chance of her preventing this happening another time to someone else or possibly even to me again. I feel pretty annoyed about it.

I think there are some owners who either don't think it's a problem when their dogs jump up at strangers or who just don't care.

What would you do if this happened to you?

You’d get my vote!

Until people can be trusted across the board to not let them jump in people and pick up after them yes, ban them 😀

Advicerequest · 18/02/2023 14:19

I had a dog wander into my toddlers picnic lunch in the park and eat it!

RobertaFirmino · 18/02/2023 14:20

What would you do if this happened to you?

I would be SOBBING and SHAKING. When I'd done a sufficient amount of this, I would call 101, then post a passive aggressive message on the local Facebook group that read: 'To the person who allowed their uncontrollable canine leap at me - thank you for letting my trousers get mud on them. I hope it makes you happy to know that I had to put them in the wash as soon as I got home...'. It goes without saying that having been in contact with a dog, I would need to bleach myself in a scalding hot shower.

I'd clean it up as best I could with a wet wipe and go about my day Confused

That's ok then

LuckySantangelo35 · 18/02/2023 14:20

Why the fuck should people have to go around in crappy ‘easily washable’ clothes just in case some wet wipe can’t control their dog?!

How patronising

I have no doubt it was entirely disingenuous and meant to be patronising. Faux wide-eyed passive aggressive 'concern'.

It was a tiny dog, you should have stared it in the eye and shoo’d it away by waving your arms if you didn’t want it to approach. Avoiding eye contact = being friendly in dog communication.

Im all for medium-large dogs on leads, but in the countryside small lap dogs are no threat.

Huh? She said they were spaniels. I wouldn’t call a Springer (for example) a lap dog.

It’s certainly not tiny.

I am not a dog owner. If a dog jumped up at me like that, I'd be absolutely traumatised.

Me too - I am actually very scared of dogs so I hate this kind of thing - all the posters saying it's not a big deal would not be saying the same if an overexcited toddler with muddy hands ran up to them and put mud on their clothes.

And I am sick of hearing - not bad dogs just bad owners - I don't care - keep your dogs away from me!

With the handgun you normally carry? Or just beat it to death?

Doesnt everyone carry a dog lethal injection

I'm pretty shocked by how many people think this is OK.

I wasn't pro on lead only restrictions until I posted this thread but now I think it's a very sensible idea. Sad for the dogs and for the responsible owners but this must surely be the direction we are headed in now.

Yeah, me too. There are non-toxic dog repellants you can carry if you need to walk through a park with particularly fuckwitted owners, along with things that make a noise (try a 'Doggie Don't) to deter them.

I'm tempted to get more aggressive with people who simply don't give a shit about their dog smearing you with mud

And you will meet the wrong person one day who will also get aggressive with you.

be careful about what trouble you start when I can bet you won’t be able to finish it, considering you cry over mud on your trousers

Heh my Next Door is full of these Very Angry People. I really want to post similar about the loud, cursing, drunken, vomiting teens on my local Tube line, but I try to remember I used to be young once.

People pay for parks through taxes. Parks are for people; dogs are tolerated there. If they can’t behave in the park they shouldn’t be there. Or they should have dog lanes the way cyclists do – both are a scourge so perhaps they could share?

Would love to see more dog-free parks, and proper dog-free beaches instead of in summer only. Dog-free towns, dog-free country – let’s dream big!

Yes! I'd bloody love that.

Brace yourself for the accusations of backpedaling and lying from the posters who don’t understand what a non-serious post looks like. 😀🔥

MarshaBradyo · 18/02/2023 14:23

The avoiding eye contact part.. I’d probably do the opposite and watch where the dog was going so I could move away

Some dogs do bound over but luckily not had this so far

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/02/2023 14:23

What I'd do is;

Go home at planned time.

Allow mud to dry off if it's very thick.
Dust dry mud off trousers.
Put trousers in washing machine with other similarly coloured clothes.
Add washing powder (Fairy) and fabric softener (Comfort Pure).
Put on 30 minute wash at 20 Celsius, 1600 spin.
Have a cup of tea and a bacon sandwich.
Hang wet washing up.
Watch the Rugby with another tea.

Or use your brain (if you have one) and not walk the same path as a happy dog which you know was going to jump on you.

control your legs.

Dominoeffecter · 18/02/2023 14:24

nalabae · 18/02/2023 14:19

I never get when people say “control your dog” how? Jump into the dogs mind and operate it like plankton did to sponge bob?

dogs jump at people, you knew this was going to happen yet you continued to walk towards a happy dog.
why can’t you control your legs which you operate?

I would have said sorry if it were my dog but this “control your dog” you would have got aired as the owner did to you.

people lack common sense these days and rub this brainless duh brain attitude on their kids

Surely if you can’t control it you keep it on a lead?

Obviously I was aware that that would be the initial response. But I was genuinely hoping that when OP is feeling a little less defensive she might actually reflect on this.

Unless you were, say, on your way to a job interview, you should maybe think about what is winding you up in your life so much that d sad something like this is an issue for you. Small niggly low level things like this are more likely to bother people who have limited control over their lives and the world around them, and limited choices.

Anything short of being on your way to your WEDDING and you should be GRATEFUL to be covered in mud by someone else’s pooch otherwise you are simply ENTITLED and probably DEPRESSED how dare you even leave the house in clean clothes in fact

CryInToYourCornflakesNicola · 18/02/2023 14:26

Flowerfairy101 · 18/02/2023 13:01

You chose to pick up the baby. The OP did not choose to have anything to do with the dog. Not the same thing at all.

Who wouldnt pick up a baby at every opportunity? If the OP never wants to meet a dog offlead shes going about it the wrong way.
My main point is maybe dont get angry at the owner or indeed the dog, I can easily see the dog protecting its owner and definitely see the owner getting pretty pissed off if one were to say, kick the dog.

I do however think that all this is utter bullshit, in my entire life living next to a park I have once only had a dog come up and jump at me. It was summer, it didnt have muddy paws, it wouldnt have bothered me if it did have muddy paws.
I am 56, it's happened once in my adulthood. So how so many people are having this happen multiple times I do not know, maybe it's the area you live in.

@nalabae

nah! Soz!

i can walk whenever I want and shouldn’t have to be dictated to be a “happy dog”.

Cos you know - people trump dogs.

rothbury · 18/02/2023 14:31

I would call the police.

Or shoot the dog owner.

Or some other really appropriate and reasoned response.
