Muddy paws dog jumped on me on walk, WWYD?

I was walking across a park yesterday and two spaniels bounded towards me about 50 yards away from their owner. I could tell they were going to try and jump up at me so I avoided eye contact with them and told my dd to do the same.

Unfortunately one still did jump up at me multiple times and left mud on my clean trousers.

I shouted at the owner to please keep her dogs under control as one had got mud on my trousers. Not in an aggressive or rude tone though.

In my opinion if you don't have sufficient control over your dog to stop them doing this they need to be kept on a lead in public. The owner didn't seem very bothered and I think there is zero chance of her preventing this happening another time to someone else or possibly even to me again. I feel pretty annoyed about it.

I think there are some owners who either don't think it's a problem when their dogs jump up at strangers or who just don't care.

What would you do if this happened to you?

I'm a dog lover, though sadly no longer a dog owner. I'd have been absolutely mortified if my dog had ever raced towards or jumped up at someone. She was trained not to do that as, apart from being antisocial, it could be frightening. A tip that works is, if a badly trained dog tries to jump at you, put your hand, flat palm downwards, at nose height so that if the dog jumps it hits a hard barri

@buttercupboots presumably the only people who are fun at parties are those who let their muddy dogs jump up at strangers? I'm assuming you are one of these people?

This has happened to me when I was out for a walk during my lunch break at work. Very annoying as we are expected to look smart rather than muddy. I think there is probably a difference between an urban park where you don't expect to have dogs jumping all over you and somewhere like a forest park when you may. Even then though, my DD used to be scared of dogs and careless owners who would let their dogs jump up at children didn't help her to get over her nervousness.

Blip · 18/02/2023 13:24

@Forestwalks are you also the entitled person who blocks my driveway every day for 15 mins (double yellow lines, dropped kerb, to collect their child from school?

why the aggressive reply?

I agreed that dogs should be on leads if their recall isn’t on point and then I said what I would do if it happened to me which was the question you asked in your original post, I then commented on some of your other replies from my point of view, which wasn’t rude.

Really baffled how I come across as entitled?
You are just coming across as angry and rude in every post.
Also FYI I have never parked across someone’s driveway…db.

@Snippysocks thanks for the practical til and also to others who have shared practical tips

People pay for parks through taxes. Parks are for people; dogs are tolerated there. If they can’t behave in the park they shouldn’t be there. Or they should have dog lanes the way cyclists do – both are a scourge so perhaps they could share?

Would love to see more dog-free parks, and proper dog-free beaches instead of in summer only. Dog-free towns, dog-free country – let’s dream big!

You’d get my vote!

VoluptuaGoodshag · 18/02/2023 13:35

I would take off my shoes and rub them on the owners clothes and say there that's us even. Actually I wouldn't but it amounts to the same thing doesn't it.

Dogs can’t be kept on the lead all the time, poor things!

Yes they can, if they are out for a walk. It's not going to kill them to be kept on a lead.

VoluptuaGoodshag · 18/02/2023 13:36

No matter where I walk, I don't expect a dog to jump up on me. If you can't train it properly you shouldn't have a dog.

@3WildOnes ahh brilliant, victim blaming!

Omg your a victim....... really?

As for putting their photos on social media I really don’t see what people get out of that, I see it as a form of bullying and makes the person posting worse then the dog owner in my opinion.

Maybe it would encourage people to control their dogs. And other people will recognise the rubbish dog owner and give them a wide birth. It's a good idea actually. Next time it happens to me the owners photo will be going up in the online wall of shame. If dog owners don't want this to happen, they know what to do...

Highly doubt it to be honest, if they are not worried about their dog jumping up on people doubt they would be worried about their photo being on the local social media pages either, that’s even if they have social media. They could also get the photo taken down if they reported it.

I would scream and burst into tears

It’s a dog, not the Sistine Chapel

BertaHoon · 18/02/2023 13:39

I would rip my trousers off, giving the dog owner a good view of my commando rear.

Then I'd twerk.

I wouldn't really, but I live in jeans and generally shit clothes suited to muddy parks. I'd be more annoyed at the out of control jumping than the mud.

Or maybe spray with anti dog fight spray

I've used Pet Corrector spray when bouncy off-lead dogs get too close to my on-lead antisocial dog. Stops them in their tracks.
It's compressed air and makes a hissing sound, spray away from the dog, it just needs to hear the hiss.
Lasts for ages and easy to keep in your pocket when going to doggie places.

GatoradeMeBitch · 18/02/2023 13:39

Dogs can’t be kept on the lead all the time, poor things!

If they haven't been trained to have good recall, yes they can. And should, because if they take zero notice of their owner they'll probably end up running into the road.

Blip · 18/02/2023 13:40

@IndiaDreamer are you are an irresponsible dog owner yourself by any chance?

OP posts:
buttercupboots · 18/02/2023 13:42

@blip not at all, but generally people who have a good sense of perspective and resilience to small inconveniences tend to be more lighthearted & happy.

You seem to be a victim of life. Of the dog. Of being "smeared" by another poster. Of someone parking across your drive for a dreaded 15 minutes. That's all in one post so you've really been through it!

My dog doesn't jump at people, she doesn't much like strangers and avoids them completely. I have the opposite problem actually, with people letting their children come tumbling over to pet her without asking. I've never shouted aggressively at a parent, kicked the child or taken photos of them though 🙃

WiIson · 18/02/2023 13:43

They could also get the photo taken down if they reported it.

Depends where it's posted :-) I'd smear it everywhere. And get it reposted too.

Alwaystheplusone · 18/02/2023 13:44

The world is full of shitty dog owners who have off lead dogs with no recall. No dog should ever be off lead when it doesn’t have solid recall.

Blip · 18/02/2023 13:45

@buttercupboots strange how you enjoy belittling people on the internet yet set yourself up as a superior being though

Would be good to publicly shame the owners as a way to stop them being so antisocial

This is getting a bit dramatic now

@Blip again you are putting yourself in the position of the victim. You have been consistently rude throughout the thread, you cannot be surprised when others respond in kind 🤷🏻‍♀️
