to want to know exactly how much caffeine is in my coffee?

Perhaps I'm being dim, in which case someone please point me in the right direction...

DH has treated us to a Nespresso (vertuo) for Valentine's. I am relatively new to coffee drinking (I know) but struggling to find exactly how much caffeine is in each pod? The website is very vague ' Vertuo coffees range from 60 to 200 mg per cup.' As I say, I'm new to coffee and also sensitive to caffeine. I have almost been weaning myself on with very weak/milky coffees for a while. I don't seem to feel ill with these vertuo coffees (like I used to with "standard" coffees) so I'm not sure if its because I've built a tolerance... I'd just like to know how much caffeine I'm pumping into my body.

Any ideas?
(Had a quick look on Costa too which seems to give all the nutritional info except caffeine content! A comparison with standard branded coffee would be very helpful) Thanks everyone and happy Saturday :)

I'd like to know too. It was really difficult to track caffeine when I was pregnant and breastfeeding. I could find information on averages but not the actual content. We have the kenco sachets and couldn't find any info about actual caffeine content.

@PatriciaHolm It does a bit, thank you! Gosh did not know that most vertuos are 170-200mg! That sounds like a lot but I'm not sure how it actually compares / how much caffeine a standard coffee has in it

Odd Valentine’s “treat” for someone who is sensitive to caffeine and having to “wean” on to it!

Invisimamma · 18/02/2023 10:45

This article tells you how much caffeine is in different coffee shops cups. Not sure if that helps.

If you're worried about caffeine why wouldn't you buy decaf pods?

Applesandcarrots · 18/02/2023 10:48

You can get decaf coffees and many are actually nice.
Why would you wean yourself onto coffee/caffein?

Particularprick · 18/02/2023 10:53

Why do you need to have caffeine op? You don't. Want a crap pressie - think you should buy yourself something different!

This! Why would you wean yourself onto coffee? Most people try to wean themselves off.

And how is this a treat for you when you don’t actually drink or currently enjoy coffee?

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 18/02/2023 10:58

I really don’t know why anyone would wean themselves onto a drug

Hesma · 18/02/2023 11:01

Buy decaf! Why bother with coffee at all???🤢

gogohmm · 18/02/2023 11:06

They vary because coffee does vary depending on with variety, the roast etc. I'm very sensitive to caffeine but find as long as it's before midday I can cope with standard coffee, after midday I stick to decaf which universally tastes horrible unfortunately

Shoxfordian · 18/02/2023 11:11

Great valentines present for someone who doesn’t really drink coffee 😆🙄

MelaniesFlowers · 18/02/2023 11:35

If you are sensitive to caffeine why on earth would you start drinking coffee in the first place? Confused

ShippingNews · 18/02/2023 11:38

Get decaf pods - simple.

Badbudgeter · 18/02/2023 11:39

Decaf pods they do contain a little bit of caffiene.

AnnoyedFromSlough · 18/02/2023 11:42

This is an odd tip, but I got it from a highly reputable source.

There are two genetic variants responsible for being sensitive to caffeine - and one of the things that helps metabolism caffeine is to eat broccoli/brassicas. High amounts of vitamin c also helps.

704703hey · 18/02/2023 11:43

It doesn't sound like a good idea for you to start drinking coffee, if you don't like it and fret about caffeine content then fine, don't drink it

I'm breastfeeding and some days drink 3/4 cuppas a day.

I don't drink caffeine it's terrible for my sleep and digestive health. Awful stuff. If you aren't used to it just stick to decaff.

Nespresso do nice decaff. I assume they will have some in the vertuo range too. It's a shame you haven't got normal Nespresso pods because you can easily pick up nice decaff in supermarkets now.

Nespresso only invented vertuo to get more money out of a new pod system. Its no better in terms of taste.

philautia · 18/02/2023 11:53

Are you sure he didn't get it for himself? Ridiculous gift for a non coffee drinker.

SleepingisanArt · 18/02/2023 12:30

I wouldn't advise decaff - most use very harsh chemicals to strip the caffeine out of the bean and these chemicals are carcinogenic. Better to avoid coffee completely if caffeine is an issue.

MrsSkylerWhite · 18/02/2023 12:32

so, he bought himself a coffee maker 😁

Actually he probably did.

OP just tell him you're not into coffee and to use the machine himself but you'd prefer something more suitable for you next time. Spell out a few ideas.

And happy Saturday too.

Gosh didn't expect the thread to take this turn! But if you all must know...

I have a confession - I love the flavour of coffee. Always have. Tiramisu, coffee and walnut cake, anything coffee flavoured to be honest. Including espresso martini. Didn't grow up in a hot drinks kind of household culture. Hated tea when I tried it as an adult. Liked coffee and hot chocolate but was sensitive to caffeine. The odd few times I had it as a young adult or as a student was when someone else made it for me - I once threw up in the bathroom when my flatmate made it for us so we could cram all night to reach deadlines. This put me off for years. In hindsight, that was clearly way too strong for me.

Fast forward a decade or so and a pandemic later, meeting friends for a coffee has become such a regular thing now that nights out/socialising around alcoholic drinks are a rarity especially as several have had children. I got into gingerbread lattes over the autumn, toffee nut lattes etc all the seasonal stuff. This is expensive and sugary/unhealthy. I bought myself some "healthy alternative" syrups etc for home. DH has always drank coffee, I started making weak milky coffees with hazelnut syrup to go and took his coffee flask. I noticed it helped me at work. I think it does make me more productive and wakes me up. My colleagues joke with me that it has taken me until now to realise this. I quite enjoy having a coffee at work.

That's the back story. I enjoy coffee and wanted an easy coffee machine rather than filter machine set up DH uses but didn't want to fork out for another machine. One or both of us worked on Valentine's and the weekends either side of it so we decided to get something to mark it instead, he suggested the dyson air wrap I have talked about or a Nespresso machine (DH's parents always had one so not so exciting for him and he prefers grinding his own beans). I currently drink next to no alcohol (perhaps 1-2 drinks per month) and am happy having 1-2 weak coffees a day but I would like to know what the caffeine content is in the coffees I consume. That is all. On a side note if anyone recommends the dyson air wrap or the shark one let me know...
