I've always had a weird hunch I'm going to die aged 32 - and I'm 31.

Kind of that really
Was once asked in amongst a series of random questions as a silly questionnaire "do you have a secret hunch of when you're going to die" and I replied automatically "at 32" at it's sort of stuck.
Have joked about it for a few years (had to stop after my DP got really cross about it).
Thing is - I turn 32 in July, and whilst my logical brain is trying to be reasonable (how could I possibly know?) stranger things have happened, and my Mum said the least reassuring thing ever when I spoke about it a couple of years ago which was "if you keep thinking it, you'll end up causing it subconciously"

So, Mumsnet, AIBU?

My XH always ‘knew’ he was going to die when he was thirty. Completely and utterly convinced. He just knew and nothing could change his mind. Even went so far as to tell me what music he wanted at his funeral!! He’s now 62!!

JMSA · 16/02/2023 17:52

Och, you're going to be fine Smile

Muchtoomuchtodo · 16/02/2023 17:55

I’m coming up to 45 - the age my mum was when she died.

I have to admit that I’d rather skip a year and go straight to 46.

BoringLittleMe · 16/02/2023 17:58

In the early days of Facebook, I did one of those 'When will you die?' silly quizzes and it said 2052. So I've always had that year in mind, although it's probably a load of bollocks. But I shall be interested to see if I live past then!

Furrydog7 · 16/02/2023 18:03

I was convinced that i was going to die in a train crash when i was 32. I am 33 now. I have undertaken several train journeys and nothing scary has happened.

FatSealSmugSoup · 16/02/2023 18:14

I had recurring nightmares I was going to be murdered in Miami.

I was a bit depressed and so booked a holiday to Miami - with a “oh fuck it then” attitude.

that was 23 years ago and Miami was lovely. Nobody even looked me up and down wrong never mind shot me! 😂

Badleg85 · 16/02/2023 18:18

I'm actually finding this thread comforting. I was convinced will die young and I probably wouldn't see 30, im 31 now and should be relieved but I've been suffering some very worrying health symptoms and while waiting for my endoscopy starting thinking that this will be it. This thread has calmed me slightly

AmberGer · 16/02/2023 18:22

I used to have the same intrusive thoughts. I thought I was going to die age 27. I never told anyone. On my 28th birthday I cried and was telling my colleague how I had always known (or so I thought) I was going to die age 27.
I didn't.
I'm in my 40s now.

xJoy · 16/02/2023 18:22

I think that 32 is a nice number and that's why it popped in to your head. Were you 23 when you said this/? so, you flipped the numbers around?

I remember saying to my bf at the time that the answer to everything was always 32 not 42 as in The hitch Hikers guide to the galaxy. I always woke up at 6.32, I always got the 7.32 train to work. I probably truth be told had a 32 inch waist.

32 is also 4 squared by two. It's the first lotto number that can't be a birthday.

cocksstrideintheevening · 16/02/2023 18:25

My dad always made a thing about how he was going to die before he was 60, it was very odd. He does a day before his 60th birthday.

Bearsinmotion · 16/02/2023 18:28

I was convinced I would never make it past 30. I did a lot of things and took a lot of risks as a result as it didn’t matter as I hadn’t got that long left anyway.

Am now 47…

MistyGreenAndBlue · 16/02/2023 18:28

I didn't realise this was so common
My mum believed for years she would die at 60. She's now 73 and going strong I'm glad to say.

Yes - although I also was stuck on a date of death for years. 28th October 2013. As you can tell I’m still very much here. (I had a dream where I saw that date on my headstone and it very much stayed with me/ freaked me out for a long time). If you are unable to move past it, maybe see your GP about potential anxiety. I also used to joke about it to my DP but it very much was to hide crippling fear.

OMG me too!! @Pocketmonstie Must be a thing.
O.P I used to have a recurring dream when I was younger where I could see the exact date of my death on a tombstone, as that date got closer I do remember losing the plot ever so slightly.
On that date I stayed at home, for some reason painted my face and played the bongos until dawn 😂
If I was trying to scare the shit out of death it worked.
I've also known a few people saying "I know 100% I'll be dead by 30/40" etc and they're still here.

ThreeLittleDots · 16/02/2023 18:32

Of course you're being unreasonable. Don't be so silly. It's not a 'weird hunch', it's a stupid waste of brain effort.

keeprunning55 · 16/02/2023 18:32

My Grandmother felt the same about turning 40 as that was when her mum died. She was convinced she would die then.
Instead, she had her third baby when she was 40 and lived well into her 80’s.
You’ll be fine.

ProfYaffle · 16/02/2023 18:32

Me and my best mate aged 17 in 1989 talked about when we thought we'd die. I said I always thought I'd die young, she said she could imagine being an old lady. She died a few months later and now I'm 51 - I've never gone into fortune telling!

See, now my next intrusive thoughts are going to be thinking I have to paint my face and play the bongos until dawn on my 31st birthday else I'll die 😅

I knew lady who was scared stuff she was going to die at 78,cos of something a specialist at the hospital said years earlier

She died when she was 78.

zurala · 16/02/2023 18:36

Do you have children? If so please get a grip, for their sakes.
My dad was like this. His brother died age 49 and my dad was convinced he would die at that age too. He moped around, went on about it, and was generally bloody awful. It was dreadful for me as a child, he was so morose and wouldn't do anything.
It's just ridiculous and I'd suggest some counselling to help you snap out of it.

misskatamari · 16/02/2023 18:37

Youre obviously being unreasonable, but I’m sorry you have that this. I’ve had anxiety in the past and could totally see myself having this sort of “hunch” and it’s hard not to have the thought pop up and start worrying/dwelling. Im sure you’ll be fine tho! Your post reminded me off this MFM animated too, which I thought might make you chuckle 😄

I had this since young.

I always thought I'd die aged 31. As that's my age my mum died.

She got ill really quickly with diabetes and wasn't diagnosed until she got ketoacidosis and was delirious, before shortly going into a coma she never woke up from.

I'm now 32. Aged 30 I started to get quite poorly, gained 3 stone in weight and was well on the way for following in my mums footsteps.

After pushing my GP to be taken seriously, I was diagnosed with oestrogen dominance, having insulin resistance and was about to develop type 2 diabetes at 31.

Loads of medication and a change to diet, and 1.5 stone lost, I've made it to 32.

Turning 33 shortly, I feel like I've got my life back.

I was convinced I was going to die at 26. Utterly convinced. For me once the thought randomly went into my head I latched onto it and I became obsessed with it. I later found myself experiencing OCD / intrusive thoughts in other contexts so it was clearly a part of that. I did not of course, end up dying at 26!
