I didn't get cost of living payment from old company

We were told late last year that we would receive £450 in two payments - November and January's payroll. The payment was for cost of living.

My last day at the company was early January. I therefore got my salary plus owed holiday. However no cost of living. I handed in my notice at the company by giving them the required four weeks - but I took the first week in January as holiday (was booked before I handed in notice).

AIBU in thinking I should have received the cost of living payment?

The payment is the same for all staff regardless of hours worked etc. we had to change our tupe contract to get it as well.

There is literally no point in responding to the OP.

OP is convinced she is in the right and rather than just contacting her old employer she is putting all her energies into disagreeing with anyone who doesn't agree with her.

Contacted them and they are paying...

Wow what a surprising turn of events. How unusual.

Almost unbelievable really 🤔

WineIsMyMainVice · 17/02/2023 16:24

I can’t understand why on earth you would expect to receive this! It’s a discretionary payment not a contractual one.

SisterAct123 · 17/02/2023 19:05

Promised in September.
To be paid in November And January's pay slip,
They changed out contracts, they don't have a bonus policy.
So why wouldn't I get it?

Bullshit 😂

So far as your old employer is concerned you could have started a new job on 7th January who are paying a COL payment in January pay for all employees, including you. They could have your replacement starting on 7th January and be paying a COL payment to them.

I just can't fathom why you expect them to pay it after you've worked your notice and gone.

Same way we've been promised a big celebratory all expenses paid shindig for the company's big anniversary this year, but if I were to leave beforehand I wouldn't be invited.

Sux2buthen · 17/02/2023 19:17

Well look how that all worked out.

Now, now. Overuse of ellipsis and underuse of the full stop is a well known indicator of veracity.

I was employed until the first Friday

So the 6th Jan?

highfidelity · 17/02/2023 20:09

Why are you asking randoms on Mumsnet rather than your company? Only your company will know why you did not receive the payment, not us.

Because you are no longer an employee, and therefore not entitled to employee benefits after your employment has ended.

HTH

Aye, course they are.

ChilliBandit · 17/02/2023 22:33

Where did you work OP, they sound like incredibly generous employers. Maybe I’ll apply there.

KarmaStar · 17/02/2023 22:52

Why do people ask complete strangers for advice, then argue all the time when their argument is with ex employers ?
It's them you should be asking not shooting down everyone trying to help you

Thesystemonlydreamsintotaldarkness · 17/02/2023 23:30

I would be surprised if any company would pay you a cost of living payment if you were either on notice or had actually left on the payment date.

CiderWithLizzie · 17/02/2023 23:38

Have they issued you with your P45? Can’t see how they will pay it if they have 🤔

It's entirely possible to make a payment to someone after issuing a P45, it's called a "payment after leaving" and there's a special way to report it to HMRC.

Not that I believe for one minute that this is happening.

CiderWithLizzie · 17/02/2023 23:45

Thanks @VanGoghsDog thats interesting to know.
