To ask how you pronounce ice cream?

ICE cream?

Or

Ice CREAM?

My dh pronounces it the second way, is it regional or just a him thing? He's from the East Midlands. Or does everyone say it that way and I'm the odd one?

When me and mine say it, it either flows evenly or the cream is more pronounced.

Hillrunning · 16/02/2023 06:09

Even emphasis on both

Offleyhoo · 16/02/2023 06:11

The first one (I now know, having sat here muttering both like a loon, who now really fancies an ICE cream)

RampantIvy · 16/02/2023 06:17

Hillrunning · 16/02/2023 06:09

Even emphasis on both

Same

autienotnaughty · 16/02/2023 06:19

ICE cream. I'm guessing it's regional. I'm from ooop north

JaninaDuszejko · 16/02/2023 06:20

Does it matter if he and you pronounce it slightly differently?

PhillyJoe · 16/02/2023 06:20

Even emphasis.

HerbalTeaAndCake · 16/02/2023 06:21

ICE cream

quinceh · 16/02/2023 06:21

I’m from the E Mids and my emphasis would be on ‘cream.’ Definitely never thought about this before!

GeorgiaGirl52 · 16/02/2023 06:30

I scream

Crazydoglady1980 · 16/02/2023 06:42

Ice CREAM also from the midlands. Had to think about it though!

GoodChat · 16/02/2023 06:50

Also midlands and also saying emphasis on 'cream'.

I've never considered this before either!

AnnoyedFromSlough · 16/02/2023 06:52

I agree with others. It's fairly balanced, but slightly more emphasis on the cream if anything.

Undertheoldlindentree · 16/02/2023 06:55

Evenly throughout (Midlands).

Els1e · 16/02/2023 06:55

GeorgiaGirl52 · 16/02/2023 06:30

I scream

This made me laugh but yes, this is how I say it 😂

BenCoopersSupportWren · 16/02/2023 06:57

Mostly even but very slight emphasis on ICE (Northern).

PinkSyCo · 16/02/2023 06:58

A little more emphasis on ‘ice’. I’m from down south.

So1invictus · 16/02/2023 06:59

As far as I recall, British English gives slightly more stress on "cream" while US English gives slightly more on "ice".
I definitely do the former.

YouSoundLovely · 16/02/2023 07:04

Definite emphasis on 'cream' here. Southern British English speaker.

Powerflowers · 16/02/2023 07:04

Ice CREAM . I’m from the south.

rexythedinosaur · 16/02/2023 07:10

Those saying they use even emphasis are probably just not hearing the emphasis correctly.

All english words with 2+ syllables have emphasis on one or the other syllable. It would sound very strange to say a word with even emphasis on both syllables.

'Ice cream' is interesting because people do say it differently, I think it is regional.

I think I do a weird mix, because where I grew up was ice CREAM, but where I live now people say ICE cream.

I definitely fluctuate and say both at different times with no rhyme or reason!

TitoMojito · 16/02/2023 07:15

Tbf I think say I scream - but emphasis on the I

CaptainMyCaptain · 16/02/2023 07:18

Hillrunning · 16/02/2023 06:09

Even emphasis on both

Same.

What about Caravan? I say that evenly too but some people (eg Peter Kaye) say caraVAN.

PinkSyCo · 16/02/2023 07:19

That’s wrong. I’ve never even been to the States!
