To ask how you pronounce ice cream?

ICE cream?

Or

Ice CREAM?

My dh pronounces it the second way, is it regional or just a him thing? He's from the East Midlands. Or does everyone say it that way and I'm the odd one?

I say ice CREAM.

It sounds weird to me in Love Actually when Emma Thompson says 'too much ICE cream' before she listens to Joni Mitchell.

UnctuousUnicorns · 16/02/2023 07:23

Ice CREAM here. Lived in my native NW England for my first 26 years, then the past 26 in central belt Scotland.

Zanatdy · 16/02/2023 07:24

Equal I think, but I have said it a few different ways when testing! Sometimes emphasising ICE - never the cream though

Riverlee · 16/02/2023 07:24

Never thought about it before.

Fairly even, maybe slight emphasis on Ice. (SE England)

UnctuousUnicorns · 16/02/2023 07:26

That said, thinking more on it... I say e.g. "I'd like some ice CREAM"... but, "Would you like an ICE CREAM?"

So, umm, not sure! 🤔

Figmentof · 16/02/2023 07:27

Equal emphasis, I am struggling to put emphasis on one word or the other even when trying. From the north, husband from east midlands and also says equal emphasis.

smileladiesplease · 16/02/2023 07:28

Oy scream

Brummie :)

Gooseysgirl · 16/02/2023 07:33

I say ICE cream, DH says ice CREEEAM. I'm Irish, he's English. It drives me nuts 😂

PurpleFlower1983 · 16/02/2023 07:41

ICE cream for me, Northern
ice CREAM for DH, Southern

Allschoolsareartschools · 16/02/2023 07:41

Emphasis on 'cream' (Midlands)
Apparently it's an old fashioned way of saying it!!!!

WaltzingWaters · 16/02/2023 07:43

Hillrunning · 16/02/2023 06:09

Even emphasis on both

Same

DinosApple · 16/02/2023 07:45

I think I put more emphasis on the ice part.

DH always pronounces it so it sounds more like Arse Cream... (He's mucking about.)

Fairislefandango · 16/02/2023 07:45

Those saying they use even emphasis are probably just not hearing the emphasis correctly.

All english words with 2+ syllables have emphasis on one or the other syllable. It would sound very strange to say a word with even emphasis on both syllables.

Ice cream is two words though.

DinosApple · 16/02/2023 07:46

Sorry, we're both from the east of England.

Bellesboy1218 · 16/02/2023 07:56

I scream 😂

Palmface · 16/02/2023 08:12

Ah ha! So interesting! Thanks for all your replies. Looks like my dh is being both regionally authentic and old fashioned!

Does it matter if he and you pronounce it slightly differently?

Not at all, this is a very very light hearted thread, in case it wasn't obvious..?

GeorgiaGirl52 · 16/02/2023 06:30

I scream

Like this

Tessisme · 16/02/2023 08:20

Depends.

'There's the ice CREAM van'
'Oooh look, ICE cream!'

I'm fickle like that!

CatAssTrophic · 16/02/2023 08:30

JaninaDuszejko · 16/02/2023 06:20

Does it matter if he and you pronounce it slightly differently?

Only if you are goady and argumentative and have time on your hands until school goes back.

Lougle · 16/02/2023 08:34

Iscream.

RisingSunn · 16/02/2023 08:36

I scream over here

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 16/02/2023 08:38

ICE cream. Ice CREAM sounds weird. I’m from the South.

Yugi · 16/02/2023 08:44

But do you say ice lolly or lolly ice? Apparently the second is only said in my home city 😝

PlinkPlonkFizz · 16/02/2023 09:08

Emphasis on the ICE - I'm Lancashire.

I've noticed the CREAM emphasis in the South, or in the Middle Class Northerner's occasionally too.
