We have two items of crockery, we dont know which is which

A - like large tea cups without handles - no part of the item is flat

B- like small plates with upturned edges all around - the centre is flat

Is one a dish and one a bowl?

Both can be used for ice cream, custard, soup etc

purely at random...

YABU - A is a dish and B is a bowl
YANBU - B is a dish and A is a bowl

or can both be either? Or are neither of them dishes or bowls?

Thank you!

Kate8990 · 15/02/2023 13:22

A is a bowl. B is a dish

poetryandwine · 15/02/2023 13:22

A is a small bowl and B is a soup plate

donquixotedelamancha · 15/02/2023 13:25

A is a bowl. B is a dish

In so far as there is a distinction, this. Either word for either one is fine.

Johnnysgirl · 15/02/2023 13:26

I think YANBU. Photo?

plumduck · 15/02/2023 13:27

B is a dish

A is a cone?!

Mamette · 15/02/2023 13:28

They’re both bowls.

They are also both dishes but plates are dishes too.

Dishes are plates, bowls and everything in between.

Bowls need to contain liquid. They can be deep or shallow but if you can’t eat soup from it, it’s not a bowl.

SlaveToTheVibe · 15/02/2023 13:29

bowls are rounder and used for more informal food.

Mamette · 15/02/2023 13:29

If feel like bowl isn’t a real word now.

Nimbostratus100 · 15/02/2023 13:30

Thank you for inputs!

just off out, will try and add a photo when I get back, if I can work out how

Who cares as long as you get the maximum quantity of ice cream?

Ponoka7 · 15/02/2023 13:33

Dishes are flatter than bowls. So A bowl, B dish. However as said a plate can be a dish The dish in 'ran away with the spoon' was a plate, with enough depth to be used for any meal, because the WC would have limited crockery. It's the whole tea/dinner regional/class thing again.

WashAsDelicates · 15/02/2023 13:37

Dish is a generic term for anything you might put food in. You 'do the dishes' after eating, often using the dishwasher.

Bowls have more of an upturn towards the edge than plates, that's all. Bowls generally have less of a flat base than plates, though not always.

Yesthatismychildsigh · 15/02/2023 13:44

A sounds like a tureen.

Dodie66 · 15/02/2023 13:54

Why does,it matter what it’s called? Just use them

StandALot · 15/02/2023 13:55

I've just taken a pic of mine op.
The one to the left as you look at it is a bowl, the one to the right is a dish.

I feel like B is a pasta bowl.

Partyandbullshit · 15/02/2023 14:12

A is a bowl (but how does it stay upright if it has no straight bits?).

B is what’s coming to be known by wanky interiors people as a “blate”. Used to be a pasta bowl.

A dish can be same size as A or B, but much bigger. It’s for serving.

plumduck · 15/02/2023 14:13

Could we have a diagram?

coconotgrove · 15/02/2023 14:13

Those are both bowls.

BigMadAdrian · 15/02/2023 14:17

I would call both of those bowls - no idea whether that's the correct terminology or not, but find I don't care much! The shallower bowl would be used for pasta in our house and the deeper one for soup/cereal.

IsThisNameTaken · 15/02/2023 14:20

Slightly missing the point but how can A have no flat part at all? Doesn't it just wobble around?!

Epicstorm · 15/02/2023 14:22

I agree with StandALot. Mine are like this.
However, there are lots of styles of bowls and dishes so I tend not to care what they get called.

notanoxfordcomma · 15/02/2023 14:25

There has to be a flat bit, surely? Even if it's small in the very centre!

Sorry, I read OP as with handles.
