We have two items of crockery, we dont know which is which

A - like large tea cups without handles - no part of the item is flat

B- like small plates with upturned edges all around - the centre is flat

Is one a dish and one a bowl?

Both can be used for ice cream, custard, soup etc

purely at random...

YABU - A is a dish and B is a bowl
YANBU - B is a dish and A is a bowl

or can both be either? Or are neither of them dishes or bowls?

Thank you!

A is a bowl. B is a dish

Agree

drinkallthecoffee · 15/02/2023 14:33

A is a bowl
B is a pasta bowl

A plate is all flat

Come to think of it I only use dish to refer to them collectively (doing the dishes)

Siameasy · 15/02/2023 14:34

I think of a singular dish as being small, dainty and perhaps even frivolous eg a soap dish.
Something feeble about a dish; a bowl has more oomph.

AnnoyedFromSlough · 15/02/2023 14:36

I would call both bowls

Nothing feeble and fragile about a serving dish.

BlueHeelers · 15/02/2023 15:02

I’d call the both bowls. But the one with the flattened edges is a soup bowl. I wouldn’t serve ice cream or pudding in it.

StandALot · 15/02/2023 15:37

Ok, another one.
The one on the left as you look at it is a tureen, the one on the right is a dish.

From the photos, both are bowls. Flatter one is a pasta bowl.

Although both are also dishes.

jannier · 15/02/2023 15:52

A is a bowl, b is a pasta or soup plate. Both are dishes.

That pattern is nice, what is it?

StandALot · 15/02/2023 16:09

I don't know, I bought it around thirty years ago, sorry.

Johnnysgirl · 15/02/2023 16:10

No worries. It's lovely.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 15/02/2023 16:15

My pasta bowls do NOT look like that. That’s looks more like a soup bowl.

TreacleMcDoo · 15/02/2023 16:17

A dish is shallow, a bowl is deep. Whether it has a flat bottom is irrelevant.

PixieLaLa · 15/02/2023 16:20

They both sound like bowls to me, a dish is like a plate

I agree.

Tessisme · 15/02/2023 16:27

A is just a common or garden a bowl.
B is a pasta bowl OR, indeed, a pasta dish (I'm a bit flaky that way😂) - also used in our house for 'double desserts' like sticky toffee pudding with ice cream or apple pie with cream.

EverlastingRose · 15/02/2023 16:32

A is a bowl.
B is a soup plate, which is arguably a sort of bowl. Or a sort of plate.

olympicsrock · 15/02/2023 16:35

A is a bowl
B is a bowl or could be called a dish

CalpolDependant · 15/02/2023 16:36

A is a bowl. The kind I would use for cereal, snacks or noodles. B is a dish. The kind I would use for pasta, soup or risotto.

But tbh, I dgaf: just place marking so I can come back and look at a photo of OP’s crockery. Highlight of my day.

Suedomin · 15/02/2023 16:37

They are all dishes. Washing the dishes refers to all the washing you. Likewise dishwasher.

Suedomin · 15/02/2023 16:39

On the second photo the first one is a tureen

Favouritefruits · 15/02/2023 16:44

Both bowls, a dish is any kind of crockery. A ‘dishcloth’ cleans all dishes so it can’t mean bowl too.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 15/02/2023 16:53

I'd call both of them bowls. I'm not sure what I'd call a dish though
