To think Rebel Wilson makes it sound like she was purchasing a car rather than a baby?

'I'd only been dating Ramona for two months and I had to be like, 'By the way, the surrogate looks like it's out of the first trimester and it is serious and I am going to have a baby by the end of the year.'

I can’t help but feel uncomfortable with the surrogate being referred to as it? And it wasn’t serious when the woman risking her life carrying a baby was implanted?

Sorry that should have said having a baby

You're not alone. I feel she ordered it on a whim and then was a bit bored of the whole idea by the time it turned up too. Horrible.

WhyCantPeopleBeNice · 15/02/2023 08:38

Honestly I think we wouldn't be critical with a pregnant mother on wording, I've heard plenty of people have words/names for the baby because it's not quite 'real' to them yet.
It, Spot, Bump, Bean etc etc - just because the baby is via a surrogate doesn't mean that the wording is wrong.

Fuckstix · 15/02/2023 08:40

Ok but doesn't 'the surrogate' refer to the birth mother not the baby itself?

Skinnermarink · 15/02/2023 08:43

Well, it is like that. She wanted a baby so she purchased one. That’s what surrogacy is.

Iateallthewotsits · 15/02/2023 08:44

But it wasn’t the baby she refereed to as “it”. Lots of people do that in the early days at a loss of what to say more than anything when you don’t know if it’s he/she and it doesn’t feel real
yet.

But she referred to the woman growing a baby for her as it. Like she was a bit of machinery.

SnoozyVanWinkle · 15/02/2023 08:44

The way I read it was the baby is it. Not the surrogate.

It's out of the first trimester. The baby is out of the first trimester.

I definitely said it when I was pregnant.
It's on my bladder.
It's really moving a lot today.
It's a girl!

But she wasn't a pregnant mother, she bought a baby from another woman. As evidenced by the fact she went out to a big party shortly after collecting the baby.

The surrogate looks like IT’S Out of the first trimester
definitely referring to the surrogate as “it”. Disgusting and dehumanising. I’ve lost a lot of respect for the woman since the surrogacy.

ZenNudist · 15/02/2023 08:48

Yes it's not nice but I'm not sure she's not referring to the baby as it. Which would be acceptable as we don't know if it is male or female.

Pity a child born to RW. Going to be left alone a lot. Shouldn't be allowed.

DarcyBlue · 15/02/2023 08:53

Yes, she is referring to the baby’s mother as ‘it’ and ‘the surrogate’. Grim!

Merryoldgoat · 15/02/2023 08:53

How can people tie themselves in knots over whether she meant the surrogate or the parent? Has basic comprehension died?

She is clearly referring to the surrogate parent as ‘it’. Whatever you think about that, that’s what she said.

HaroldTheeStallion · 15/02/2023 08:57

By the way, the surrogate looks like it's out of the first trimester

Of course she isn't referring to the baby. Had is been 'the surrogate says' or something similar, then maybe, but the above is pretty clearly referring to the birth mother.

Emmamoo89 · 15/02/2023 09:00

I have no issues with her. I like her

caramac04 · 15/02/2023 09:00

I read it as the pregnancy is out the first trimester. That aside, I’m really not keen on surrogacy. Having a baby/being a parent isn’t a right and many (less wealthy) women just have manage the cards life has dealt them.

Yes same here.

The surrogate looks like it's out the first trimester = the surrogate looks like the baby is out the first trimester

AnneLovesGilbert · 15/02/2023 09:04

The surrogate looks like it's out the first trimester = the surrogate looks like the baby is out the first trimester

That makes no sense at all.

The lengths people will go to to defend this stuff is staggering.

What does your liking her have to do with the fact that people are upset that she called her surrogate ‘it’? Does liking someone mean that they can never do anything wrong in your eyes?
Agreed OP. I don’t agree with surrogacy anyway, but to refer to the woman who is putting their life at risk because she decided she wanted a baby as ‘it’ is despicable. Like she’s just a vessel, not a person.

I don't think anyone hiring a woman for her body holds them in particularly high regard tbh

That makes absolutely no sense. Rebel Wilson hasn’t previously shown signs of having no command of the English language, so I think we can assume she is referring to the surrogate as ‘it’.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 15/02/2023 09:09

Well , at least she’s not hiding the reality of the situation, and pretending that it’s all fluffy clouds and generalised warm feelings.

StarsSand · 15/02/2023 09:10

Gross calling the birth mother 'it'.

I thought it was very strange going to a party a few days after the birth. Like she'd bought a puppy.

You'd think she'd give the a few weeks of her undivided attention at least given she didn't carry him/her.

I also think less of her for going to Dubai on a publicity trip. A country that criminalises poorer men and women for being gay. Must be nice to be paid to drink champagne and post to Insta without that impacting you at all.

TheUsualChaos · 15/02/2023 09:10

Awful. And I'd thought Rebel was one of the good ones tbh 😕
But this normalising of surrogacy in celebrity culture is concerning as it trickles through. I was talking to a colleague recently about her son who is gay and she was saying about how she wonders if he will want children one day and just flippantly said "he would need to find a surrogate or go abroad". It was like adoption just didn't even come into the equation anymore.

StarsSand · 15/02/2023 09:11

@WaddleAway Rebel Wilson has a law degree from one of the most competitive universities in Australia. I'm pretty sure she didn't mess up her grammar.

She called the surrogate 'it'. Delightful.

xogossipgirlxo · 15/02/2023 09:11

The whole idea of surrogacy is wrong.
