Why were we told off in Thailand?

Still trying to work this out …

We were staying in Krabi. DH and I decided to go for a walk one night and when we got back two of the hotel “night watchmen” were out looking for us with torches. We were escorted back inside, the receptionist told us off saying it’s very dangerous to walk around at night (it was a pretty rural area, not very populated). We were then escorted back to our bungalow and told not to leave again and if we wanted anything we should call reception.

Any ideas??! DH thought she said something about king kobra but I assumed that was a joke … !?

They probably thought you were going to get robbed and didn’t want to deal with the resulting admin.

Popplcroft · 14/02/2023 21:17

If it was countryside then, yes, snakes are a risk

Skinnermarink · 14/02/2023 21:17

King Kobra was a band.

WestOfWestminster · 14/02/2023 21:17

Perhaps they were looking out for your personal safety? Why didn't you ask them, ir doesnt sound like you were 'told off' more like they were trying to warn you about something, eg a King Cobra.... yikes!

MissingMoominMamma · 14/02/2023 21:18

The receptionist told you it was dangerous. I’m guessing that western tourists are a target.

Did you not think to ask the receptionist to expand on their comment?

Choice4567 · 14/02/2023 21:20

But they told you why…

maddy68 · 14/02/2023 21:20

Muggers target 'rich " drunk tourists with expensive jewellery

DaveyJonesLocker · 14/02/2023 21:20

Snakes, other carnivorous wildlife, muggers?

Like she said, it wasn't safe, I'd take her word for it. When we were Tanzania they had tonnes of guards at hotels and they strongly recommended you have a "guide" if going out and about. I don't think they'd have let us out of the grounds at night. Especially the rural areas, lions obviously, but very much humans in the populated areas.

skgnome · 14/02/2023 21:22

Sounds like there were either robberies in the area or dangerous wild life
neither of which are part of a nice evening walk
they we’re looking out for you

TigeToo · 14/02/2023 21:22

her English wasn’t great and she was very animated, plus we were caught off guard by the fact that we were seemingly in trouble so no I didn’t ask, wish I had though

Her words were more like “what are you doing? You can’t do that! Do you want to die? Something something king Cobra”

thing is she was normally such a joker that I couldn’t tell if she was being serious about the cobra thing or not or if it was really down to human wrong ‘uns

😂This made me laugh so much. Thank you.

TigeToo · 14/02/2023 21:24

Reason I’m confused is that many of our friends have been to Thailand and gone on nighttime walks but have never been told not to or that it’s dangerous etc!

OP posts:
Lcb123 · 14/02/2023 21:24

They told you why!! It’s not safe and they don’t want to deal with consequences if you got mugged or worse. Thailand has such a massive tourist industry I’m sure they don’t want negative press.

Zooeyzo · 14/02/2023 21:25

They were telling you to be cautious because of robberies. You weren't told off. Thai hotels and thai people in general look after guests very well.

feellikeanalien · 14/02/2023 21:26

I've just googled OP and there are apparently many venomous snakes in Thailand including the king cobra. So that would seem to be the answer.

Did they go to the same place you did?

quietnightmare · 14/02/2023 21:27

Never had this happen to me in krabi or anywhere in Thailand and I have been several times

Presumably they didn't go to the exact place you went, or stayed in that exact place, or put themselves at risk of snakes??
I certainly never had any issues staying out in Thailand but then I stuck to towns so IDK what it's like in the countryside.

Notimeforaname · 14/02/2023 21:28

Jesus christ, they are locals, they tell you not to do something because its dangerous in those parts, you dont fucking question it?!

There you go OP.

MelaniesFlowers · 14/02/2023 21:29

Why would you not research the local area to check it’s safe?

plumduck · 14/02/2023 21:30

It seems its either snakes that will kill you or people that will attack you.

Does it really matter which?
