Why were we told off in Thailand?

Still trying to work this out …

We were staying in Krabi. DH and I decided to go for a walk one night and when we got back two of the hotel “night watchmen” were out looking for us with torches. We were escorted back inside, the receptionist told us off saying it’s very dangerous to walk around at night (it was a pretty rural area, not very populated). We were then escorted back to our bungalow and told not to leave again and if we wanted anything we should call reception.

Any ideas??! DH thought she said something about king kobra but I assumed that was a joke … !?

People do get raped and robbed and murdered in Thailand. They don't like us to know but it does happen. Remember Hannah Witheridge?

I've been to Thailand three times for months at a time.
I've never seen a snake! Which is great as I have a bit of a fear of them 😨

A lad was brutally murdered alongside her- David Miller- yet people hardly ever mention him. There were a few highly suspicious deaths around that area.

How about you trust their judgement and listen to people who have local knowledge?

They told you it wasn't safe.

Your friends might have been in completely different locations.

@LeandraDear its quite tricky not to touch any of the surface/ wall of a huge building mind.
Not like going up and poking the Koran really is it?
Every inch of the building is covered in mosaic and you are hustling up stairs with about 100 other people.

Pretty much every hotel and office or apartment building in Thailand has security guards at the gate and check points to stop cars just driving through - usually to issue parking passes/tickets to get in and out, or to stop randomers coming in to the hotel/building who are not guests.

Their concern was for you in the first instance (injured, attacked by an animal or reptile, being robbed/mugged/killed) but I think it's for the wider protection of the tourist industry. In a country which relies heavily on the income from tourists in a lot of areas, tourists dying or getting hurt would damage the reputation and prevent tourists from returning. I wouldn't take it personally - they're responsible for your safety as a holidaymaker but they're also responsible for the upkeep of the area's "safe" reputation, something that people look for when booking a holiday.
