Phone HSBC. A voice will thank you for calling Haitch S B C.

This is all kinds of wrong, isn’t it?

At least we don't have that gaping social chasm in Ireland. Thanks, Penneys.

Have we discussed 'film' yet???

There is obviously only one correct pronunciation of film. It's fill-um

I wish it were referred to as a film, with either/any pronunciation. Unfortunately, all we seem to hear now is it being called a 'movie'.Angry

With you OP.
I used to be a quality assessor in a call centre- if an agent pronounced it as 'haitch' instead of 'aitch' when spelling something out, it was an instant mark-down. The guidance was clear.

Same as 'arks' instead of 'ask'. Didn't matter that it was a regional/cultural variation- there has to be a basic professional standard.

Biscuit Absolutely no parallels with haitch/aitch and ask/arks!!! Ffs!!

Poor old the English with their status obsessions.

Aks for ask is dialect as well isn't it? I wouldn't correct it.

Why do you code switch @StrychnineInTheSandwiches?

Do you do it because people don't understand you unless you switch, or because you feel they'll judge you?

When you code switch do you always change
your pronunciation of both haitch and r, or do you just change one or the other depending on the situation? Or have you completely changed how you pronounce r all of the time?

Sorry about all the questions, I'm just curious. I did ask the OP if she felt people who said haitch should be asked to change to aitch if they worked for HSBC, but she didn't reply.

In work I sometimes have to give presentations to groups of quite 'proper' (stuffy) donors so I'd be conscious of aitching in that context, just so they're not clutching their companion and saying 'Good Lord, Cedric, she haitched'. Threads like this have made me realise some English people can fixate on it. And it's not just with H. With friends and family I'd say 'ye' for a collective you as, lots of Irish people do, but I also wouldn't 'ye' the donors either.

With R it's not that I think my pronunciation is wrong in any way, it's just that Irish people pronounce R as ORE whereas British people say ARGH. So it's purely to make myself understood. I remember once talking about the TV show ER to an English colleague and they thought I was talking about Eeyore the donkey.

JenniferBarkley · 18/02/2023 10:42

Yeah I wouldn't code switch with Haitch but I've had to with the letter R to make myself understood in the past.

Similar to this is “primark/preemark” pronunciation

technically it is primark but the local pronunciation where I live is preemark. All staff up to store manager level called it preemark.

Primark existed in NI for yonks before it made its way to GB and it was always called pree-mark on their TV ads. Nowadays the company says the brand name should be pronounced pr-eye-mark, but that's definitely only a recent development.

I call it Penney's wherever I am.

I worked in Primark for years and we all definitely called it Preemark - I’d say that way is dominant in Scotland, whereas the other (wrong!) way is more common elsewhere. I did the tannoy announcements so I was officially in charge of the official pronunciation, so what I say goes.

(I am joking, kind of)

And Scottish people pronounce R as “arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr” like a pirate

They're not going to given any numpty control of the tannoy! So yes, what you say goes. Pr-eye-mark me eye!

i don’t see how jay can possibly be correct, the song clearly goes “aitch eye j-eye Kay ELLEMENOPEE”

Twinsforthewin · 18/02/2023 11:11

Disgustingly vulgar, how dare they shorten it form Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, I am getting my butler to send a strongly worded letter to the chairman, tsk tsk

But … surely you must think it sounds better with those lyrics? I accept the American pronunciation of Z for the purposes of this song, and I would argue the Scottish pronunciation of J should be universally used for the alphabet song.

Try it, I bet you’ll like it!

it's not me you need to persuade, it's Sesame Street! If Kermit and Co give J-eye the green light I'll fall in line.

I love the confidence you have in me that this will get as far as a meeting! I’m willing to take this all the way. Should I just send my petition straight to Biden? Surely they will be pleased that I’m approving their pronunciation of Z (only for the purpose of this song - outwith the alphabet song, they are wrong) and a fair trade would be that they also officially approve J-eye?
