To ask, how do you handle your period at night?

I used to be so blessed. I would change tampon at about 10:30, sleep until 6:30 and change. There would rarely be a leak at night.

Since I entered my 30s, I bleed heavier at night, and I also find I need more sleep when I'm bleeding. I want to sleep at around 9-9:30. But I wake up at 1am ish leaking. So it seems I can't leave protection for more than 3 hours, even at night time. I'm knackered in the morning as I can't get back to sleep easily.

I hate sanitary towels, I wake up in the night and have to change those due to the heavy bleeding and also have the additional mess to clean up too.

Am I resigned to getting up every 3-4 hours on my heaviest days? Do other women do this, is this just an accepted part of life if you have heavy periods? I don't know how it's possible to sleep through the night without changing now. It makes me dread those days even more so.

Heavy flow period pants - total bed sheet saver!

Tygertiger · 13/02/2023 18:19

Mooncup is enough for me, but I would add period pants too if needed.

AlotIsntAWord · 13/02/2023 18:19

Super plus tampons, night time pads, sleep on a towel, up 4 times a night waiting until day 3 when the tranexamic acid kicks in!

ThreeLittleDots · 13/02/2023 18:21

Mini pill; no cycles, lovely sleep

Swimswam · 13/02/2023 18:21

Also have your iron levels checked - heavier periods can be because of anemia.
Ginger extract capsule form also reduces bleeding

Puffalicious · 13/02/2023 18:21

I double up- super plus tampon and reusable pad. Pad sorts any leaks.

Definitely interested in those heavy flow pants, though.

GoldenGorilla · 13/02/2023 18:23

night Time pads plus two pairs of heavy flow period pants plus sleep in black pjs on a dark towel. Can usually get through the night like that.

Ifnotdufferswontdrown · 13/02/2023 18:24

Not me but dd - Modibody heavy flow shorts. Merina coil also helped mine get lighter. I'd have added a mooncup to the shorts myself but over all that now (whoop whoop!)

Confrontayshunme · 13/02/2023 18:26

Menstrual cup plus period pants but then I started taking tranexemic acid and it has made a world of difference. Heavy bleeding is worth a GP visit!

geminiflanagan · 13/02/2023 18:26

Wuka heavy flow maxi briefs. They have a heavy duty pad that runs from waistband to waistband, front to back. They are amazing and have made an enormous difference, and I find irritate me a lot less than pads

SettingPrecedents · 13/02/2023 18:27

Also here to recommend WUKA heavy flow pants. They’re absorbent waistband to waistband, I’ve found them bombproof.

Merlott · 13/02/2023 18:28

Black towels 🤷‍♀️

lieselotte · 13/02/2023 18:30

Night time pads and sleep on a towel. Sometimes I am luckier than other months, and it's ok and I get through the night, sometimes I need to get up twice in the night. Usually I only have one bad night though. Can't use tampons because they itch, I only use them for swimming. Doubling up sounds like a good option though.

autumn1610 · 13/02/2023 18:30

Mooncup empty it before I go to bed 10ish and usually no leaks and put a pair of period pants on as pads are just irritating at night

And black knickers. I was in my flippin 30s before I thought about black knickers!

SouperNoodle · 13/02/2023 18:30

I used to have an insanely heavy flow and what worked for me were 'heavy-flow night' period pants and the night time bodyform pads that are really wide at the back. I had to use them together and would often sleep on a towel as well.

The coil has been an absolute game changer for me! I sleep with a daily liner on and that's all!

redskydelight · 13/02/2023 18:31

When I was at my heaviest I would have to wear max absorbency sanitary towels and max absorbency tampons and get up in the night to change them. So I think women with heavy periods probably do have to do that. Wish period pants had been around when I was younger!

Ifeellikeateenageragain · 13/02/2023 18:31

Night time maxi pads that go all the way to almost the top of the undies both front and back and/or period undies and then I wear some M&S little lycra shorts that keep everything clos tight to my body so moving around at night doesn't accidentally dislodge and let blood run down my legs or onto the sheet

SBAM · 13/02/2023 18:32

Menstrual cup plus period pants. Or previously, tampon and always extra massive night pad (probably not what they call them on the packaging!).
And if I’m really worried about a leak then I lay down a towel to sleep on too, but I used to find that made me sleep badly.

Pixie2015 · 13/02/2023 18:33

ultra tampon, night time pad and period pants for first 2-3 nights - try different brands

Spicycheese · 13/02/2023 18:33

I think they're Modibody but the heaviest period pants for overnight and a towel underneath just incase. I used to have to get up all hours changing pads and faffing about period pants have been a life changer for me!

TheShellBeach · 13/02/2023 18:33

Menopause sorted out my problems.

Mayhemmumma · 13/02/2023 18:36

Moodibody pants = life changing night times

Mini pill; no cycles, lovely sleep

Lucky you! My periods have been regular as clockwork on the mini pill for years - including after baby breaks!

OgdensGoneNutFlake · 13/02/2023 18:40

Honour Your Flow reusable night pads. They're not like sanitary towels. I used them post 2-childbirths as well.

Their website says "These are pads for women who don't believe there is a pad big enough to cope with their flow. The Mega pads are more absorbent than the Slim Megas, but the Slims are very effective and more slimline. The Mega pad is BIG! Suitable for extremely heavy monthly bleeding, for after childbirth, for heavy night flow, when the Night Pads are not thick enough."

They REALLY work and they're soft too. And made in.the U.K.

(I don't work for them, honest!)
