DH has bought 16 yo son a sports car, obviously can't even learn to drive yet. Never mind the potential insurance costs and the cost of living situation. My objections ignored. WWYD?

I'm going to hazard a guess he's bought himself a sports car and hasn't got the balls to tell you so he's going to play it off as "oh no the insurance is so expensive. I'll have do give DS my car instead and have his."

thaegumathteth · 12/02/2023 22:11

My main concern wouldn't even be money it'd be the danger aspect for when he can drive. I've known too many teenage boys be in serious car accidents.

vodkaredbullgirl · 12/02/2023 22:12

🤔

Polomuncher · 12/02/2023 22:15

It's totally the danger I'm concerned about.

What exact car is it as this would influence my response.

scottishclive · 12/02/2023 22:16

Confisgate it for yourself

Yeah we definitely got that from your OP where you solely mentioned money

Ludo19 · 12/02/2023 22:18

Sell the car and buy a punto? (Nothing wrong with puntos, just to be clear!)

TreacleMcDoo · 12/02/2023 22:18

Is the car registered in your 16 year old's name? It will probably need to be as many insurance companies don't like you to be the main driver if you are not the registered keeper. My son passed his test last year but will be a named driver on my car. Eye watering cost for that first year though.

It is completely irresponsible to hand over a sports car to a teenager. Run the plate now through an insurance comparison website.

Witsendwilly · 12/02/2023 22:20

What sort of “sports car” is it?

GoodVibesHere · 12/02/2023 22:22

It's such an absurdly stupid thing to do that I can't imagine this is the first time your DH has been an idiot? Does he normally communicate with you before buying stuff, or is he prone to impulsive spending of vast amounts of money?

UnicornsHaveDadsToo · 12/02/2023 22:22

What's the car? Not all "sports cars" are high powered death machines people seem to think they are. A Mazda MX-5 with a 1.6L engine or a little Ford Puma (not the current SUV, the 20 year old little coupe) with a 1.4L would be very different to an F-Type with 5.0L V8. If you have the space to keep it, buying something that's a bargain that the 16 year old can start to use could make sense, but it all depends on what the car is.

Pfeiffle · 12/02/2023 22:25

Sports car and a teenager is asking for trouble. How much will the insurance cost?

Toddlerteaplease · 12/02/2023 22:27

I wish there was a law about how powerful cats could be in the first year or two of driving. Teenagers driving powerful cars around us a recipe for disaster.

maddy68 · 12/02/2023 22:28

My dad bought mea sports car at 17. Insurance was ridiculous. I crashed it shortly afterwards. It was silly x

That's absolute rubbish. Insurance companies don't like customers being dishonest about who's going to be the main driver and policy holder; they don't care if the policy holder/main driver isn't the registered keeper. Feel free to check by comparing insurance quotes by ticking/unticking the relevant box in the forms.

WeCome1 · 12/02/2023 22:28

Yes, very much depends on the car. It’s still a stupid choice though.

WarningToTheCurious · 12/02/2023 22:29

A Mazda MX-5 with a 1.6L engine

That’s still insurance group 23.

We definitely have had fewer options when trying to insure a car to not the registered owner.

DH and I take it in turns to be the insured person.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 12/02/2023 22:31

An MGB would count as a sports car.

Slower than most modern cars and would qualify for classic car insurance.

But what is the car?

@GoodVibesHere

Congratulations on posting the most stupid response I've seen on mn.

How do you know how much the car cost?

You don't.

How do you know what the car's performance is?

You don't.

But feel free to post with irrelevancies.

Insurance company will still likely need a years experience before providing cover. Pass Plus might help though.

True, but it's not a particularly powerful or fast car at all, especially an older one.

As it happens, personally, I preferred to spend money on getting advanced driving instruction and courses for our elder children which they both enjoyed. Then they got sports cars with decent engines on their 21st birthdays when they'd been driving for nearly 4 years (both passed very quickly at 17).

scrivette · 12/02/2023 22:39

I agree, it depends on what car it is.

SuperGinger · 12/02/2023 22:42

My teenage boyfriend got a BMW sports car around 30 years ago he was an excellent driver.
