DH has bought 16 yo son a sports car, obviously can't even learn to drive yet. Never mind the potential insurance costs and the cost of living situation. My objections ignored. WWYD?

Actually, I do agree with this. At the moment, you can pass your test in a wheezy little supermini with less than 80 bhp, and then jump straight into a Porsche 911 GT3 RS with 523 bhp, or a Ferrari 296 GTS with a ridiculous 830 bhp. Even a Tesla Model 3 Performance has 527 bhp. The only limit is how fat your/your parents' wallet is to pay for the silly insurance.

It's much more sensible with motorcycle licences. There are 3 categories, A1, A2 and the unrestricted A, restrictions based on power, power to weight and, in A1, engine size, with category restrictions being lifted with age, number of years licence has been held +/- additional tests. Given the disparity in what cars tests are taken in and what cars are available to be driven, that would be a far better way to structure the car driving licences, too.

A slight thread derial, but relevant to the quoted post.

Here on the Isle of Man there are many roads with no speed limit. You can legally drive at 120mph or more on single carriageway roads (we don’t have any dual carriageway or wider)

There is only one motorbike test, which is taken on a 125cc with a max of 13hp. Once passed you can ride whatever bike you like.

Car and bike tests can be taken as soon as you like after turning 16. So there are sixth forms full of kids rocking up in cars and on bikes that they can drive on roads with no speed limits.

Howeve, for the first 12 months after passing their test a new driver or rider of any age must display R plates front and rear. These are white and red like an L plate but with an R.

These limit that vehicle to 50mph, so regardless of how powerful the vehicle is the driver will be stopped and likely have their license revoked if they are caught exceeding 50mph workin 12 months of passing their test.

It works fairly well in my opinion.

Sorry I was agreeing with you, that too many people are jumping to have a view without facts.
