Or at least places in an area of supermarket that is supervised. Literally witnessed a mum in her late 30s early 40s filling up her pot in Tesco with her hands after doing most her food shop. Every tray had its own scoop but she grabbed a handful of each one, picked some out and took a quick look round and then threw the rest back in the tray out heat hand each time 🤢. Even when he teen came over he looked disgusted. Surely this ‘woman’ (loose term) should know bloody better. And yes she saw me clock what she was doing but I wasn’t going to pick an arguemnet infront my 2 year old and autistic 5 year old who was on the verge of a meltdown as it was!

Yes I agree. In our local supermarket they are at child height, so on more than one occasion I’ve seen children just go and rummage their hands around them. Disgusting.

Greenshake · 12/02/2023 20:02

I am not sure that we should be banning it, rather supervising it better.

OnlyFannys · 12/02/2023 20:04

I think most people know to avoid pick n mix quite literally like the plague for this reason

sanityisamyth · 12/02/2023 20:05

Doesn't need banning. Needs parents to parent. My DS has never rummaged through the sweets and knows that they're vastly overpriced so doesn't ever ask for any.

Floralnomad · 12/02/2023 20:06

Anyone who is remotely bothered about hygiene wouldn’t buy pick and mix , so no they don’t need banning , some people just don’t care who has touched what .

OP saw a grown adult doing it tho

BigMacExtraPickles · 12/02/2023 20:11

Exactly why I don't do pick and mix and my kids aren't allowed it either. Bloody disgusting 🤢

R00K · 12/02/2023 20:13

The same for morrisons and harvester salad bars

Maybe they meant that if that grown woman had been parented properly then she wouldn’t be so scummy? 😂

emmathedilemma · 12/02/2023 20:15

I haven’t seen pick n mix anywhere for years! Market stalls and cafes where food is just out in the open, particularly cafe counters with cakes out at “coughing height” give me the boak too.

thepatronsaintofbubblewrap · 12/02/2023 20:18

Wilko had these operating at least part of the time when we were social distancing/heavy cleanliness measures.

Undertheoldlindentree · 12/02/2023 20:20

Sainsburys loose bakery goods - saw a man pick up and squeeze every loose cheese roll in the compartment with his bare hands before selecting the one roll that he wanted. This was 9 am - can't even reduce the risk by shopping early.

Missingpate · 12/02/2023 20:23

We have a lovely old fashioned sweet shop where the shop assistant fills a bag for you with what you pick from the jars behind them, local kids all love it. We do that occasionally but you are right about how grim the help-yourself ones are!

WhoNeedsSleepNotISaidMyBody · 12/02/2023 20:28

NO they don't need BANNING!

it's a slippery slope, once they start 'banning' things.

People can choose not to buy them & maybe the companies will decide to do something else instead.

but banning things NO. JUST NO.

LoveBluey · 12/02/2023 20:29

Same with the bakery loose items, I wish I could get them but always have to go for the prepackaged stuff.
Our Tesco also has a display of Krispy Kreme's behind glass but it's self service so you open the window and take your doughnuts. I watched a young boy open it and lick - yes lick at least 3 or 4 and then put them back.

tootiredtoocare · 12/02/2023 20:31

I won't go anywhere near them. Ewww.

Sporty2022 · 12/02/2023 20:43

I remember in the pandemic when pick and mix was stopped. I was worried that this would be a permanent thing !
Thankfully it wasn’t and I’m glad it’s back. I don’t want pick and mix banned !
I think anyone that’s worried about cross contamination probably wouldn’t eat pick and mix in the first place.

Wheelz46 · 12/02/2023 20:45

I have seen adults do this, I wouldn't go anywhere near them 🤢 Same with food buffets I'm afraid, once saw someone jabbing their finger up their nose and start picking up and placing sandwiches back on the buffet table 🤢 Don't use these either.

Ihatethenewlook · 12/02/2023 20:45

Why should they ban them? If you don’t want it, don’t buy it.

Happysalley · 12/02/2023 20:46

All the e-numbers and sugar kill any bacteria that comes into contact with them.

Hedonism · 12/02/2023 20:48

Don't be silly, just don't buy it.

ScrantonDunderMifflin · 12/02/2023 20:49

Omg I have to admit I genuinely never thought someone would just put their hands in it.
Used to love a good pick and mix.

JustAGirlInACountrySong · 12/02/2023 20:49

only on mumsnet!!

I never touch those loose rolls. You have no idea who has handled them or if they've been on the floor and you can't exactly wash them.

londonrach · 12/02/2023 20:58

Have you seen the scoops. Yuk . Pick and mix isnt clean by the nature of it and you know that. It's up you re risks. I stopped using them after I found dead insects in one as a child
