Or at least places in an area of supermarket that is supervised. Literally witnessed a mum in her late 30s early 40s filling up her pot in Tesco with her hands after doing most her food shop. Every tray had its own scoop but she grabbed a handful of each one, picked some out and took a quick look round and then threw the rest back in the tray out heat hand each time 🤢. Even when he teen came over he looked disgusted. Surely this ‘woman’ (loose term) should know bloody better. And yes she saw me clock what she was doing but I wasn’t going to pick an arguemnet infront my 2 year old and autistic 5 year old who was on the verge of a meltdown as it was!

Same with the bakery loose items, I wish I could get them but always have to go for the prepackaged stuff.
Our Tesco also has a display of Krispy Kreme's behind glass but it's self service so you open the window and take your doughnuts. I watched a young boy open it and lick - yes lick at least 3 or 4 and then put them back.

You have done me a big favour telling me that! Normally I struggle to walk past a Krispy Kreme - luckily I don't live near one!

As a PP said they do not need banning, that is a complete overreach. If people want to get pick n mix knowing that others might have touched it, that’s up to them. All loose products seem a bit gross to me particularly in supermarket bakeries where they are all uncovered - but that is my opinion and up to me to decide.

only on mumsnet!!

Exactly. Have any of these people ever been in a professional kitchen, or bought from a market stall/ice cream van?

Abba123 · 12/02/2023 21:02

Umm. Should they be banned? Nope. It’s called freedom of choice.

Are they hygienic? Probably not, especially in busy supermarkets!!!

My children do have pick and mix at the cinema and they love it and I doubt that they’ll catch anything worse than they’d get from touching the seat in the cinema.

Many years ago I was in Woolworths next to the Pick n Mix. There were stickers up that said 'Try before you Buy" so I helped myself to a few.

My mum came along absolutely mad at me wondering what I was eating. Looking at the sticker again I noticed it actually said 'Buy before you try' 😂

pick & mix, along with bakery products that anyone can rummage through are just part of natural selection.

Surroundedbyfools · 12/02/2023 21:14

For god sake. I think my eyes have rolled out the back of my head.

yes that is gross

no pick and mix doesn’t need banned ffs.

if ppl still want to eat pick and mix and loose bakery items that’s up to them. U would be extremely unlucky to drop down deid after consuming something someone else had touched.

anomaly23 · 12/02/2023 21:22

I don't let my kids anywhere near them and don't allow my kids to buy them due to germs.

Sainsburys loose bakery goods - saw a man pick up and squeeze every loose cheese roll in the compartment with his bare hands before selecting the one roll that he wanted. This was 9 am - can't even reduce the risk by shopping early.

Oh no 🙈 that’s awful 🤢

That's disgusting 🤮

Ludo19 · 12/02/2023 21:47

I stay away from "open" food. Folk coughing and sneezing all over stuff, sticking grubby hands choosing the best scone in m&s. I'll only buy prepacked unfortunately.

Did you whip them out and hand in to staff?

I can’t get bothered about this. If you care, don’t buy them 🤷🏻‍♀️

Oh don’t let the sneering unhygienic lobby frighten you off. Your instinct was right. They’re minging.
