To think that desk treadmills are a dangerous con

Folicky · 12/02/2023 17:45

If desk treadmills were a viable and safe option they would the answer to a huge problem I gave with bring too sedentary. Sedentary as job is partly deskbound and because am single parent of 8yo and can't leave him unattended to go for a walk/jog. I can walk around the football pitch/park when he's playing but otherwise it's tricky. If there was such a thing as a slimline, foldable desk treadmill, it would be an immense help. Anyone had any joy with these? They became more popular during the pandemic but I can't find many up to date reviews online. Posting here for 🚦

So why do you think they are a con?

Clymene · 12/02/2023 17:49

Where's the bit about them being a dangerous con? Confused

Did you write your title and then write your post on a different day?

Butitsnotfunnyisititsserious · 12/02/2023 17:51

Why aren't they a viable and safe option?

jacult · 12/02/2023 17:52

What’s unsafe about them? I can one and think it was a bit of a fad as I didn’t really use it after the first month of lockdown. Wasn’t unsafe or a ‘con’ though. It was more of a bike thing if you see what I mean.

Is the title clickbait to draw people in or something?

SignOnTheWindow · 12/02/2023 17:52

I'm interested in one of these. Found this article from a couple of months ago:

OnNaturesCourse · 12/02/2023 17:53

I'd love one.

SignOnTheWindow · 12/02/2023 17:56

And this is the one I'm looking at.

Why are they a dangerous con??

nonetteP · 12/02/2023 17:58

I have one and used it every day (currently on mat leave). It was about £100 on Amazon, a walking pad type one. I just slid it under my height adjustable desk.

TakeNoTweetsGiveNoQuacks · 12/02/2023 17:59

Also here to find out why they're a dangerous con please?

I don't have one, but I'd definitely like one if I worked from home

Cellotapedispenser · 12/02/2023 18:00

I want one. But £600 is a lot to risk when I know myself well. Have joined gyms many a time only to get bored after 3 months and still pay the monthly 'fine'. I got myself a stand up top desk and make myself stand for half the day and I'm not allowed to lean when standing. Have lost a stone so will stick to that for now.

SlippinKimmy · 12/02/2023 18:05

I made my own by buying a small walking treadmill from Amazon and getting a desk riser for my computer. I can’t say I use it as much as I’d like, but when I do it’s great and certainly not dangerous. Only problem is I can’t use it if doing something complex as I’ve found out I can’t walk fast and think/type well at the same time!

TheBitchOfTheVicar · 12/02/2023 18:18

I've got a walking treadmill. I use it for an hour maybe three times a week, either when in a meeting I am just listening in on and not required to contribute, or when watching a webinar or similar. Im much more likely to be outside walking or running. But when I'm too busy or the weather's shit its ideal

CastleCrasher · 12/02/2023 18:36

I'd love one. I have an exercise bike that has a built in desk which I really like, but walking would suit me better. If anyone has one they'd recommend, please let me know 😊

JizzlordTheCat · 12/02/2023 18:39

I love mine.

rosegoldivy · 12/02/2023 18:55

I have a walking pad. Use it daily while wfh on teams calls / conferences (muted obv)

Best purchase I've made. No cons too it.

This

If the op wants reviews just ask

Leirvassbu · 12/02/2023 19:28

Why are they are a dangerous con?
And if you think they are a dangerous con why would you want one??
Makes no sense.

Yup it's basically "has anyone got these? Thinking of buying one" But written so it gets more clickies and reactions of "they are not con, I have this one"🤷🏻

Folicky · 12/02/2023 19:41

Dangerous because treadmills that are not desks have handles or arm supports to keep balance, so unless you lean on your desk I was concerned about stability. Con maybe was hyperbole, a fad that sounds good but doesn't work is more what I meant. So any recommendations? Jizzlordthecat?

Applesandcarrots · 12/02/2023 19:44

I never leaned on anything on normal treadmill...

You just pick speed you are comfortable with. I had normal one but used to read, held the tablet usually so no leaning anywhere.

If your balance is that bad maybe yes, they could be dangerous with that. Bike then

Fr what I've read it makes it more difficult to work, type, concentrate for some.

You could just get a normal treadmill and use it to jog/walk. Before long you will be able to leave your DC alone more.

AdventFridgeOfShame · 12/02/2023 19:50

Have you thought of a physiotherapy if you are unable to move your legs without support?
