Would you go to A&E

DH wants me to go to A&E but I'm not sure. For around a week my legs have been painful. The pain was really bad this morning and reduced me to tears. Sitting hurts, walking hurts but I'm not sure it's actually an A&E thing.
I can't take time off work for a doctors appointment so would have to wait until Friday to see a doctor but I'm in so much pain and can't get back any relief from it.
Would you go to A&E?

Can you call 111?

TomatoSandwiches · 12/02/2023 16:03

No, call 111 instead.

TiaI · 12/02/2023 16:03

111

crazycadetmum · 12/02/2023 16:04

Its neither accident or emergency. Ring 111.

Mabelface · 12/02/2023 16:04

Yes, go. If nothing else you'll get good pain relief. 111 would send an ambulance.

What on earth makes you think 111 would send an ambulance?

BounceyB · 12/02/2023 16:05

If you can't walk and it's getting substantially worse then it's an A&E job. If you go to A&E you generally have to be really clear on the symptoms and how it's affecting you.

FourBoysAndAFeline · 12/02/2023 16:07

No I wouldn't.

Everyone has the right to get a GP appointment. You can't attend A&E just because you feel the pressure of work.

If it was one leg and there was redness and swelling I would say yes, but both legs? Presumably no redness or swell?

Call 111 and go from there.

Ell95 · 12/02/2023 16:07

Screw your job. Don't wait until next Friday for a doctors app. Call 111 for advice or GP in the morning, your health comes first not your work place who don't care about your health

Ponoka7 · 12/02/2023 16:07

What part of your legs? It could be a number of things, a walk in is pointless. 111 will want to guard against it being an embolism. A&E isn't just accident and emergency anymore, it's Cristal care etc. Until you have your pulse in your ankles taken and a scan (if other symptoms fit) you don't know that it isn't an emergency. I have Peripheral artery disease, it could be your arteries.

Workjobfind · 12/02/2023 16:08

Yes. Unless you have a walk in centre. You may need an x-ray so it makes sense to go somewhere with those facilitates especially given today's change in condition

Crumpetdisappointment · 12/02/2023 16:08

how can you work?

maeveiscurious · 12/02/2023 16:08

111 for pain relief and heat, electric blanket as it sounds you have gone into spasm.

Pain relief, rest and heat will help.

Try and see a physio as they can triage you quicker than a gp

MelaniesFlowers · 12/02/2023 16:08

Nope. You need to see a GP.

You can’t just rock up to A&E because you “can’t” take time off work when you absolutely can.

Ponoka7 · 12/02/2023 16:08

Your GP will have to cover their back and send you to A&E. I've supported a few elderly relatives with your symptoms. Unless your GP has X ray vision, they will refer you to hospital.

WeCome1 · 12/02/2023 16:08

You don’t go to A&E because you can’t take time off work to go to the GP. So take that out of the equation and either phone 111 or make a GP appt for as soon as you can next week.

Newpuppymummy · 12/02/2023 16:09

Call 111. They should be able to get you an out of hours doctor’s appointment

Thekormachameleon · 12/02/2023 16:09

The pain is so bad you are contemplating going to A&E but yet it's not so bad that you can't take time off work

Doesn't sound A&E worthy in all honesty then

Call 111, they'll assess you and he'll make an appointment for you in the appropriate place of care

SlipSlidinAway · 12/02/2023 16:10

Of course you can take time off work to see a dr. But try 111 as others have suggested. It's not an accident or an emergency.

Aldisfinest · 12/02/2023 16:11

I think it depends what part of your leg is hurting. If it's calf or thigh pain and associated with any swelling or hot to touch. I would absolutely go to a&e.

Rosebel · 12/02/2023 16:13

I'm going to call 111. Work are short staffed next week due to half term and it's a job where a certain number of staff need to be in or they can't open.
I absolutely won't be doing a lot and DH will have to drive me but I do need to be "in numbers".
I have blood clots on my lungs and it started with leg pain so I do worry.

OP posts:
Crumpetdisappointment · 12/02/2023 16:15

will they give you medication? will that help any blood clots?

LIZS · 12/02/2023 16:18

If it is bad, you have to make time to see gp, work can wait.

Given your history with blood clots and the fact you're in so much pain, absolutely go to a&e.
