Ebay - can he legitimately complain?

Sold a coat on Ebay. It was a men's coat, very large, 48". I stated the size in the title and the description. Showed a photo of the size tag on the coat. Put a screenshot of the size guide and highlighted the size measurements. Seller has messaged to say coat is much too big and wants to return it.

I do not accept returns as stated. AIBU to say sorry, no, size was clearly stated? And can he legitimately say item not as described? Coat was a 280 coat, worn once, sold for 120.

ebay will side with him regardless as long as he returns it.

AlotIsntAWord · 12/02/2023 14:46

Decline the return – You can decline the return request if you've stated in your listing that you don't accept returns. Send the buyer a message – If you have any questions regarding the buyer's request, you can contact them directly.

Unfortunately with ebay its not a question of who or what is right, its about who Customer Services will side with on that day.
For an item that expensive I would insist he return it for a refund, then relist it and block him. There's a risk ebay will side with him and refund him.
Remember you can leave a reply if he leaves snarky feedback. If people need an item to fit that well they need to buy from a shop where they can try things on.

Thelnebriati · 12/02/2023 14:47

Even if you don't accept returns, buyers are able to return an item if they claim it is not as described.

Tirednest · 12/02/2023 14:50

Hard to see how he can say it wasn't as described.

I've not even received the money yet as it's on hold pending delivery - even though its been delivered.

I've also had 16 ebay fees deducted- if I accept his return will they be reimbursed?

Contact ebay customer services and explain the problem.

This is one of the reasons why eBay sucks nowadays. Even if you have stated no returns, he can just say that the measurements stated were wrong and they'll side with him. "Not as described" seem to be the magic words.

malmi · 12/02/2023 14:55

It's very easy for him to say it wasn't as described. It doesn't have to be true, he just has to say it. You will get a credit for the eBay final value fee. Just accept the return and list it for a higher price!

Yeah I'll probably do this, thanks.

Completely missing the point. She's not a shop/business!

You know there is no legal right to return clothes in a shop for that reason?

And there are shops that won't allow a return, and only an exchange, for that exact reason?

What a ridiculous comment. Surely if OP ran a shop, the customer could have tried on the coat.
How she sounds entitled is beyond me.

It's not OP who's being entitled, it's the buyer who should have checked the measurements properly. Shops don't have to refund you either for buying the wrong size, only if the item is faulty.

ShakespearesBlister · 12/02/2023 15:02

I'd say it's not worth the aggro, you just got unlucky. Just accept the return then as soon as you receive it block the buyer. It will sell to the right person. Make a point in your description about the size being very large.

OP doesn't run a shop though, does she, so it's a pointless comparison. Anyway, shops do not have to offer a refund if someone buys the wrong size.

This poster foes this sort of shit on every thread they post on. Just ignore the trolling. They love the attention from the bun fight they cause.

Well with all due respect, I disagree with the above comments. If I went into a shop and wanted a refund because something didn't fit and they refused me and said it was my own fault, there would be a major scene caused.

Anyone who recognises you will not be remotely surprised at that statement.

Don't ever shop in Sports Direct or House of Fraser then.

Looks like OP's buyer found her thread!

UnlikelyStar · 12/02/2023 15:09

Very similar happened to me and I replied to the seller saying sorry, I can't accept returns. That was the end of it. The seller can put the item back on eBay if they want to. I am not a shop, I clearly stated the measurements. Isn't it a risk you take when you buy on eBay, that the item might not fit?
