Hi,
Firstly sorry if this thread is in the wrong place wasn't sure where to put it.
So again this year we are planning to holiday in the uk in august, we have 4 dc, including 2 teens.
The places we are considering are Yorkshire, Northumberland,South Wales. But we want warm days. How is the weather in theses places in august. Which is the best place to visit from these places taking weather into consideration. We have traveled quite a bit of the uk and so far been lucky with the weather ( apart from snowdonia). Twice we went to Ayr in Scotland and it was lovely weather around 23 degrees but felt warmer.
We live in London, but really so want warm weather. I know no one can guarantee weather here but any ideas or experiences? Thanks

I would say that's impossible to answer! I live in Northumberland and its definitely dryer than the west but I can also be chilly - just like everywhere else in the UK in august.
I would say, book your holiday and hope for good weather but don't rely on it (it pissed it down the whole weekend when I was last in London but we had a great time).

We had a lovely holiday one year in Pembrokeshire, Wales
It might be hard to find a large holiday cottage for Aug 23 as they are booking 2024 at this point. Usually you need to book by Christmas at latest.

We’ve had great weather many times in Dorset and a few years ago we had lovely weather when we stayed near Chester. Dire weather for holidays in South Wales (several times) and the Lake District. However, we always managed to find things to do and had fun. There really is no guarantee of good weather in this country and after Wales and the Lakes we went to a Gite in the Vendee which really didn’t cost that much more.

Yorkshire can be warm, but it can also be very, very wet. Last August holiday in Yorkshire we wore both shorts and t-shirts and lit fte wood burner in our cottage as it was so cold when it lashed with rain. All in 1 week.

potentialmediator · 12/02/2023 09:01

It’s the same as the rest of England. I’ve had freezing holidays in Cornwall in August! last year was hot and sunny (we’re in North West) but maybe a degree or two cooler than London which was ideal really. Hopefully it will be the same this year bar the really insane temperatures

Riverlee · 12/02/2023 09:04

Just looked up to see what the warmest place in the UK is and the answer is … (drum roll), Isle of Scilley.

I love Northumberland but when I last went in August we were in hoodies/ fleeces the whole time.

Yorkshire is a bit warmer but less so on the coast. South Wales it tends to rain more.

Hoppinggreen · 12/02/2023 09:11

Impossible to tell.
We went to The Yorkshire coast at the end of August last year for a weekend and it was very hot but we saw it as an unexpected bonus.

MaryShelley1818 · 12/02/2023 09:13

I live in the North East....it could be 12 degrees and raining or 30 degrees and red hot! Late teens would be probably more typical but this is the issue with holidays in the UK, totally impossible to predict. Will almost certainly be much cooler than you're used to in London though.

I'm going to the Lake District for the last week in August.

If anyone has the answer to this can they also please PM me the winning lottery numbers for the Euromillions on Tuesday please.

TIA.

We had a lovely holiday in Filey, Yorkshire. Drove over to Scarborough for a couple of days out too then we had a week around York area (DP likes the beach but I like days out visiting things hence the two locations). Filey and Scarborough had very steep hills which killed me at the time because I had DS in a pram which was hard work but I'd go again now that everyone can walk by themselves!

Teateaandmoretea · 12/02/2023 09:15

I'm going to the Lake District for the last week in August.

Its a very hot place the Lake District, based on my experience of one week last year 🤣.

HermioneWeasley · 12/02/2023 09:17

It completely varies. There is definitely no guarantee of warm weather in either place. If that’s essential for you you need to choose a different location.

ThreeblackCats · 12/02/2023 09:19

If anyone could predict with accuracy the weather for 6 months into the future in a temperate climate, they’d be very, very, very wealthy.

Its August, august is usually ‘nice’ . There is no way to guarantee good weather in the UK op. Go somewhere where there’s plenty that appeals even if it’s raining, cold, blowing a Gale or snowing. It’s the uk. We have very varied weather.

If warm weather is important , visit one of the warm islands in the Mediterranean. It’ll be cheaper anyway, you’ll spend a fortune on food in the uk.

gogohmm · 12/02/2023 09:28

I'm can be warm almost tropical, can be 16 degrees and raining. Unless you book within 7 days of going you really can't predict. Generally warmer in the south wetter in the west unless there's a microclimate. I'd choose somewhere with scope for indoor activities eg a holiday park with indoor pool etc if you are concerned

Soozikinzii · 12/02/2023 10:09

Anglesey North Wales is lovely we've been the last couple of summers and had good weather . Barmouth or Tenby are nice as well might be nearer for you ?

StillWantingADog · 12/02/2023 10:15

You really can’t predict

south east UK is the warmest and driest that time of year. Last summer we went to Portugal and Anglesey and Anglesey was way hotter - it was that heatwave week. Not pretty.
but we’ve had good weather that time of year in Northumberland, Whitby, Somerset and Pembrokeshire.

Forever42 · 12/02/2023 10:16

As others have said it's impossible to say but looking at general climate patterns those places have a much lower chance of being warm than somewhere in the south of England. If you want warm days statistically you will be more likely to get them in the South East. It could also be cold and rainy there too of course.

stonebrambleboy · 12/02/2023 10:46

Watch Robson Greens Weekend Escapes on BBC iplayer. Then come up to Northumberland. Loads to do even if it rains. Holy Island is amazing , the beaches and castles are gorgeous.

stonebrambleboy · 12/02/2023 10:49

Oh and take the boat trip from Seahouses to the Farne Islands.

pavillion1 · 12/02/2023 12:01

id go south rather than north . salcombe is beautiful

LlynTegid · 12/02/2023 12:11

If you have some discretion as to when in August you can go, avoid the weeks around the bank holiday I suggest. Also it always seems to be warmest the day the football season resumes!

You may not be able to avoid wet weather, but the further south you are, usually the warmer it is.

DragonflyLady · 12/02/2023 12:26

Holidayed in Northumberland two summers ago and had a glorious time with wall to wall sunshine! Probably had two overcast days. Had some lovely sunny days in the Scottish isles too. Also had one week where it relentlessly pissed it down too!
