Would you have let your 4yo watch this movie?

Left my son at a very trusted friend's house for 4 hours yesterday. Just learnt from him that she let him watch The Mummy. I haven't seen it but he was telling me about how bugs eat their skin, it has a pg13 rating and commonsensemedia.org recommends 12+. He's told me a lot about the movie and I'm about to purchase it and watch it so I know exactly what he's watched. For anyone who has seen it, is it as scary as it sounds? How upset do I need to be?

There are some right arseholes here tonight. If I was minding your child I would not put on a horror film, and we would discuss what it was OK for him to watch as tall kids are sensitive about different things.

I wouldn't let my 6 year old watch it. It would be frightening for her.

I'm not sure why some people (generally speaking) are okay with their kids watching things meant for teens or older. I have heard 4 and 5 year olds at the school gate discussing horror movies I havent even seen and I just think wtf?! I know it probably sounds pearl clutchy, I just think it's totally unnecessary.

GlamGiraffe · 10/02/2023 21:04

I think the fact is a 12A rating suggests its completely unsuitable to be showing a for year old really, especially one who is not your child , and who you don't have to deal the consequences of them being exposed to it. It should be obvious even without looking at the rating but that categorically demonstrated it. We're not talking about a10 year old seeing a 12. 4 is ridiculous. If be livid if I were you OP.

OnlyFannys · 10/02/2023 21:05

I wouldn't let my 7 year old watch it, I love the film and watched it around the age of 10 I think and found it a bit scary. My 7 year old is quite sensitive and easily spooked so I think it depends on the child to an extent

I wouldn’t have shown it to someone else’s 4 yr old child, but honestly, I wouldn’t get too worked up about it if my child had seen it. It’s not the world’s best parenting/child minding, but it’s really unlikely to do any damage. Let it go and just mention next time that your ds was a bit scared and could she ensure that he just watches more age appropriate stuff.

Elemenohpe · 10/02/2023 21:07

I wouldn't put it on for someone else's child but I know my 4 year old wouldn't be bothered, she feeds cockroaches to our dragon!

MyMachineAndMe · 10/02/2023 21:07

I watched watership down at that age and wanted a rabbit as a pet afterwards. Sure he'll be fine op.

Emmamoo89 · 10/02/2023 21:09

Definitely not

I think this is the most sensible. Thank you. I was never going to go in all guns blazing and have a go at her. Just trying to be responsible as I don't let him watch 12 rated films unless I've seen them and thought this was the norm. She's an old friend, she would never do anything inappropriate intentionally.

No - absolutely not.

Pleasecreateausername13 · 10/02/2023 21:10

I was watching Predator and Aliens at 5-6 but it was the 80s lol! I loved it.

ChocMarshmallows · 10/02/2023 21:11

My children are 9 and 11. If they have a friend over and we watch a film that's not u or pg, I call the parent and ask their permission first. They would do the same.

Never in a million years would I show a 4 year old child, that wasn't my own, anything more than a PG. Even then, I'd ask the parents permission if not a u.

Surprised people think this is fine.

I'd have been v unhappy if either of my children had been exposed to a 12+ film at the age of 4, at someone else's house without my permission (which I wouldn't have given)

MillicentTrilbyHiggins · 10/02/2023 21:17

No I wouldn't. I found it scary when I saw it at the cinema, and I was 15 maybe?

Regardless of if your DC found it scary or not its a 12. And he's 4. If 4 year olds are watching movies for 12 year olds they'll have run out of things to watch by the time they are older. (Not literally, there'll always be more films) But won't everything seem boring?

TicketBoo23 · 10/02/2023 21:17

No, it's inappropriate for a 4 yr old.

The mummy's "incarnation", he leaves a man blind taking his eyes, the scarab beetles getting under people's skin etc.

No.

TicketBoo23 · 10/02/2023 21:20

There's also a bit where it's clear they're going to kill Rach weisz's character as some kind of sacrifice.

sqirrelfriends · 10/02/2023 21:25

absolutely no way.

Im shocked so many here would.

Snowpaw · 10/02/2023 21:25

My 4yo is scared of Polar Express! So no, she would not be watching the mummy.

VestaTilley · 10/02/2023 21:31

No way! Not for a child under 10, never mind 4.

Don’t let your friend babysit again.

Also isn't the mummy's girlfriend (Anck Su Namun i think) practically naked when she appears as well?!

Yeah she's not wearing much and the backstory to the Mummy being killed (for shagging the pharoahs wife) is shown with them in a clinch and that being discovered through her body paint being smudged.

You'd have thought such an apparently wily high priest wouldve been cleverer than to smear the pharoah's wife body paint and make their adultery obvious but .....that's hollywood story lines.

To be fair nakedness is one thing that I really am not that fussed about my son seeing (as long as no sex scenes or anything like that etc)
