To not be feeling the pinch with energy costs?

Firstly let me apologise, the title might seem goady but honestly I am at a loss.

I am on a pay as you go meter for both gas and electric. I put £40 on both (so £80 total) at the start of the month and it lasts almost exactly til the next monthly top, usually with a few pounds left to spare.

2 bedroom house, quite old but in good condition, although single glazing and very large Victorian sash windows. Myself and 2 children at home.

Heating is on 4 hours a day total, sometimes 3 hours. That’s 2 large 5ft wide radiators and a smaller 3ft one. 3 baths a week and a shower every night. The house rarely gets cold because of the bursts of heating.

Electricity wise we are average I would say. Always a couple of lamps on, a tv, tumble dryer and washing machine both on once per day. Charging things sporadically as most do, like phones and what not.

3 days a week I am at work and both kids in nursery / school, so between 9-5 three days a week no one home, but the rest of the week we are pretty much always here.

I am at a total loss. I have friends and family who are crippled by the rising costs, everyone I know is saying it’s become a living nightmare. I have called our supplier (SSE) twice now (just off the phone to them there now, which prompted this post) to check there is not something seriously wrong with the meters! Both times they have said no, nothing that they can see on their system.

Now on top of this anomaly, SSE text me once a month with a top up code for £33 of free electric. I have no idea why, I have questioned this and just told if I receive the texts then I am entitled to use it. So not only am I not feeling the pinch, my bill is £33 lower than it ever has been. I’m somehow better off since this crisis than I was before, it makes absolutely no sense.

I am at a total loss and panicking because I’m convinced something is amiss and I will be hit with a huge debt.

Is there any way I can look into this properly? Frankly it seems massively unfair and I am baffled by it all. Some people close to me are saying they can’t put their heating on and they sit in a cold living room, I’ve put £20 on their meter for them a few times now as a top up but it goes in days!

is anyone else in this bizarre situation? It can’t be right surely.

I'm happy for you, op. Enjoy it while it lasts and save as much as you can in case your luck turns.

gazpachosoupday · 10/02/2023 20:39

OP

I would get it writing from your energy supplier and then prepare for a big shock, when it does go up.

We were fine and using about the same, but our tariff went up just before Christmas, £30 for 7 days, now its £30 for 3 if we are lucky

Getir · 10/02/2023 20:58

Well Whoopsie do for you, OP. It's like the gas and electricity prices hikes were all a dream.

bungaloid · 10/02/2023 21:00

There is no escaping the fact that my unit rates for gas and electric have doubled in the last year. I can choose to mitigate that my halving my usage, but it's not how I want to live.

BarbaraofSeville · 10/02/2023 21:00

What are your unit rates? Are you on an old long term fun so still paying 2021 prices?

BarbaraofSeville · 10/02/2023 21:01

FFS. FUN = fix

Creative34 · 10/02/2023 21:02

Ours has also been very manageable. However we renovated in the past 3 years from top to bottom so we invested in thick insulation, we have LED lighting throughout, all new appliances that are energy efficient, a new boiler and heating system, plus new windows and doors throughout. Our energy loss is minimal.

You can't be on that on pre payment afaik

PinkPantherPaws · 10/02/2023 21:15

Judging from some of the posts on this thread I think there are some people who have an awful shock coming at some point.

Gas and Electric prices have increased by a massive amount in the past two years.

If you're not on a fixed rate and haven't dramatically reduced your usage, it's literally not possible for your bills to be the same ish now as they were then. Not possible. Compare your bills now against your own bills previously.

If they're the same for similar usage, it's not good luck or variation nationally or 'only having 3 radiators'. It's an error, and when it's identified, they'll back date your bill.

SherbetDips · 10/02/2023 21:17

For me personally I’ve not been massively effected, I pay about 30 for electric and 40 for gas. Live alone 3 bed split level flat.

MyWillyBrokeTheDogBowl · 11/02/2023 03:58

Sorry for the slow replies, unexpected guests!

I’ll check my KW rates tomorrow and update.

just to clarify, not 3 radiators in the whole house. There are 3 others off because the others give off enough heat to warm the whole house, so technically actually I suppose only 3 on.

my concern is if there is a meter error or I’m on the wrong tariff. Would I be liable to repay any discrepancy? I’m sure I would in reality and need to budget for a potential situation like that.

Some one asked if I was in a terrace but it’s a semi detached, it’s hard to describe but it’s essentially one big house turned into two. It’s only 2 bed but very spacious rooms so not a typical two up two down like I used to live in. It’s Victorian proportions so high ceilings.

I know some people have the £66 taken off their bill and others have it paid straight to their bank account , the latter being how I receive it. After next month's payment it all stops so if they don't come up with another financial assistance offer then it will hit many folk where it hurts.
Only positive is the weather is gradually improving and in a few short months we can switch the heating off.

Ginmonkeyagain · 12/02/2023 11:32

OP as a comparison we have not changed our usage much and since we moved from a fixed rate tariff on to the current price cap rates our monthly bill has increased from £59 per month to £109 per month. We have a smart metet so I know this is covering our usage pretty much.

We are two people in a two bed flat. We have the heating on at 18 degrees for about 4- 5 hours a day, use the washing machine twice or three times a week, run a dehumifier, take one shower each a day and then the general cooking and other usage.

Oblomov23 · 12/02/2023 11:32

You are only spending £80. You don't have your heating on very much. Great. Ours is on more than you, we provide regular meter readings, our DD is a lot more than yours. Has increased a huge amount from a few years ago. I refuse to be cold though.
