To not be feeling the pinch with energy costs?

Firstly let me apologise, the title might seem goady but honestly I am at a loss.

I am on a pay as you go meter for both gas and electric. I put £40 on both (so £80 total) at the start of the month and it lasts almost exactly til the next monthly top, usually with a few pounds left to spare.

2 bedroom house, quite old but in good condition, although single glazing and very large Victorian sash windows. Myself and 2 children at home.

Heating is on 4 hours a day total, sometimes 3 hours. That’s 2 large 5ft wide radiators and a smaller 3ft one. 3 baths a week and a shower every night. The house rarely gets cold because of the bursts of heating.

Electricity wise we are average I would say. Always a couple of lamps on, a tv, tumble dryer and washing machine both on once per day. Charging things sporadically as most do, like phones and what not.

3 days a week I am at work and both kids in nursery / school, so between 9-5 three days a week no one home, but the rest of the week we are pretty much always here.

I am at a total loss. I have friends and family who are crippled by the rising costs, everyone I know is saying it’s become a living nightmare. I have called our supplier (SSE) twice now (just off the phone to them there now, which prompted this post) to check there is not something seriously wrong with the meters! Both times they have said no, nothing that they can see on their system.

Now on top of this anomaly, SSE text me once a month with a top up code for £33 of free electric. I have no idea why, I have questioned this and just told if I receive the texts then I am entitled to use it. So not only am I not feeling the pinch, my bill is £33 lower than it ever has been. I’m somehow better off since this crisis than I was before, it makes absolutely no sense.

I am at a total loss and panicking because I’m convinced something is amiss and I will be hit with a huge debt.

Is there any way I can look into this properly? Frankly it seems massively unfair and I am baffled by it all. Some people close to me are saying they can’t put their heating on and they sit in a cold living room, I’ve put £20 on their meter for them a few times now as a top up but it goes in days!

is anyone else in this bizarre situation? It can’t be right surely.

OP posts:

I am shocked at how much electricity and gas it turns out a lot of people use. There should probably be a household limit that can't be ignored just because you have money and will pay.

Haha and people with ventilators can just what? Turn them off?!

Daffodilis · 10/02/2023 18:43

I'm on pay as you go for gas and elec, my choice, I put 200 in electricity a month and 50 in gas.

GiltEdges · 10/02/2023 18:44

Well it’s a pre payment meter. So you’re paying for what you use. There’s no way you’re going to end up with a bill somewhere down the line because that’s not how prepayment works. Just enjoy it. Or as much as you can enjoy only heating your home for 4 hours a day 🤷‍♀️

2bazookas · 10/02/2023 18:47

I put £40 on both (so £80 total) at the start of the month and it lasts almost exactly til the next monthly top, usually with a few pounds left to spare.

How does that compare with your bills (and the amount of gas.elec used) before the power-prices crisis?

Maverickess · 10/02/2023 18:57

I'm paying the same amount per month as I was left year, using half the amount of gas and electric (now on my own) and with the £66 a month government money, so I'm definitely paying more but it doesn't feel like it iyswim? Could it be something like that?

I don't want to scare you OP, and I'm saying this because I know where you're coming from and people are saying you can't run a debt up on a pre pay meter - you can if they're the old key/card types without a smart meter and they're programmed incorrectly so you're not paying the right unit amount. The company may waive the debt if they want to, but I don't think they'd have to and they could just add the debt to the meter and recover it from your future top ups.
I had a similar situation where I didn't actually owe anything (meter error) but it took them so long to sort it out I ended up paying most of it back because they just take it off your top ups so if you want the gas/electric on, you pay the debt, and you have to fight for it back.

I'd be suspicious too OP and would ask them to confirm in writing that you're paying the correct unit prices to give you peace of mind.

Helendegenerate · 10/02/2023 18:58

Op as long as your meters are functioning correctly then just enjoy your warm home etc.

Two family members have hardly seen much increase in their bills and aren't on pre pay meters. My costs have roughly doubled and not on a pp meter either.

Doesn't seem right or fair perhaps to some but suppliers and standing charges do seem to vary a lot.

Gmamaofboys13 · 10/02/2023 19:00

Looking at your bill/access is the meter serial numbers the same as your meter? What tarrif(s) are you on and how much kwh are you using per year for gas and electric (it should say on your bill was SSE estimate to be your annual usage, any more questions go into the mse energy forum for help and advice

I think they do vary hugely. I keep checking and rechecking my bills because I keep thinking they have made a mistake and I'll owe ££££££.

Porkandbeans1 · 10/02/2023 19:04

Now my child is older I'm out at work all day and then I tend to be busy on my days off too. It makes a massive difference when you don't have to have a home heated all day and everything is turned off.

ArnoldBee · 10/02/2023 19:05

I've just had a £700 refund from my supplier. The kids are learning about layering!

Leakingtoilet · 10/02/2023 19:08

WhatInFreshHell · 10/02/2023 18:28

I'm on pre payment and am putting around 120 per month on my gas....and I think I use it less than you appear to do.

Yep £150+ going on pre payment gas a month and we definitely use less heating than the op, as in it doesn't go on most days. Family of 4 in a 2 bed terrace.

moozles · 10/02/2023 19:09

We are in the same predicament, our electricity supplier wanted to lower my dd but I’m worried there will be a huge hike and then be in a muddle so put it back up to what we can afford. We are in a 3 bed semi, 2 adults and a teenager!

Jadedbuthappy82 · 10/02/2023 19:13

Am in very similar boat but even more bizarre for us... In rental so panicked last year when we were all advised to find lowest deal etc and I didn't have the option to change supplier so just thought oh well, what will be will be. My direct debits are set at £20 for gas and £27 for electric. It baffles me. We live in an old stone terrace with big draughty rooms, single glazing and gaps in our front door. Not allowed curtains up (very high decorative ceilings) so only have blinds at each window and can often see them move as air comes in from outside. When I put the heating on it soon gets really toasty after say twenty mins, but we do wear woolly jumpers and slippers and have a few blankets on the sofa etc, sensible bits like that. We don't have a fridge freezer and the washing machine doesn't work, shower Isn't an electric one and it's a combi boiler. Can't say we ever get that cold either. I am genuinely intrigued with what people are doing to run up hundreds of pounds on their bills...

Jolie12345 · 10/02/2023 19:26

If you and your family are not on prepay meters the difference will be down to when you agreed your tariffs and for how long

Choconut · 10/02/2023 19:42

Only three heaters in a whole house is very little. most people have a heater in the sitting room, dining room and or kitchen, 2 or 3 bedrooms, bathroom, possibly separate toilet/shower room, hall ways.

Applesandcarrots · 10/02/2023 19:47

I also use very little. Usually about £5 a month now, it used to be £3 tho. But yes, some of the prices people are giving are mindboggling.
Also on pre payment here.

Lots of people are still not realising prepayment and fixed are now often the same price

EmmaDilemma5 · 10/02/2023 19:52

Do you really only have three radiators in the whole house? I would imagine that's part of it. Heating three radiators isn't much.

Rather than chase suppliers, I would just be putting some money aside (if you have any spare) just in case. If you don't have extra, then you'll be in the same position if they come to you with a large bill than you would have been with monthly increases.

mybunniesandme · 10/02/2023 19:56

I luckily fixed in October 2021 literally days before prices start to go up and it's fixed for 2 years - I currently pay around £130 a month. I've done a few searches and can expect that to double when my fixed tariff expires in October so maybe you just caught lucky and got a good fixed tariff?

AfraidToRun · 10/02/2023 20:08

We just moved but in our last place with the government help SSE were paying us to have electricity...

Fuwari · 10/02/2023 20:11

I’m on pre pay meters and my house is also Victorian, single glazed etc but 4 bedrooms. I’m putting in £25 a week gas but the heating is on 24/7 really. I set it to 16 at night, 20 in the day. Electric is about 15 per week. This is roughly the same as it was for me last year, but then the £66 voucher makes it cheaper. Everyone I know on DD is paying more and using less. Plus they had the higher payments through summer whereas I didn’t. I’m never swapping my meters for bills. I really dont think I’d be better off and I like knowing that it’s paid for in advance.

Mrssillylegs · 10/02/2023 20:12

YANBU, We have electricity prepayment with Scottish Power and we use about £2 a day. £3 if the tumble dryer has been used (I only use it once a week though!)

That covers WFH, laundry, cooking, xbox

2 bed semi detached here, family of 3.

I'm still worried about price hikes though...

HikingforScenery · 10/02/2023 20:13

Four hours a day heating? wow, no wonder you’re barely using anything. i’d be freezing

Twinklenoseblows · 10/02/2023 20:13

You only have 3 radiators in the whole house? That would explain a lot of if I suspect. I imagine the average 3 bed for example has at least 8 (1 per bedroom, bathroom, hall, lounge, dining room, kitchen).

SheSaidHummingbird · 10/02/2023 20:17

Post your p/ kWh.
Definitely strange but you're right to question and investigate.

GenuinelyDone · 10/02/2023 20:21

Check your tariff. Ours is half the price of the current price cap rates. Great for now but it'll be appalling when the tariff expires later this year.
