AIBU to back out of park run

AIBU to back out of park run because I’ve realised how far it is and I’m super unfit.
I am fairly slim but my fitness is that I could run to the end of the road. Will I be the only person who is basically walking it?!

I'm not trying to put people off. I'm asking people to show respect for volunteers and anything over a hour you need to be doing it yourself.

And if people stop volunteering then your park run doesn't run, mine has suffered for volunteers since the changes to park walk early last year.

Why is that your problem?

All these "slow people" clearly piss you off, so I'm not sure why you bother? Hmm

I may attend tomorrow, if I am awake, depending on what sort of night I have

If I go in my current state of health I will take well over an hour

I will expect, and receive, kindness and support, as I have given in healthier times as a volunteer myself

Under no circumstances would I consider not going because of my speed, or accept anything less than 100% from the volunteers.

I dont expect to ever meet @Againstmachine in person, which is slightly disappointing, as believe me, they would be dealt with

Wow threats to deal with me now because I disagree with you about times that is pathetic I'm sure that goes against the ethos.

I will attending my first parkrun tomorrow and I will be walking the whole thing!

Brilliant! Which one?

I'm doing my 50th tomorrow.

nothing wrong with over an hour - I was well over an hour after surgery, and I wasn't last , as there was other people there with serious medical conditions. I have been back marker too, when I was fit a and healthy, and had no problems at all with people taking over an hour.

If the usual finish times are way under a hour, I would say yes there is as people who do it are volunteers and don't want to be there all day.

If you are taking way over a hour I'd do my walks independent to parkrun as it's unfair to volunteers.

Thankfully you don’t attend my local as you sound like the kind of c u next Tuesday that thinks you should only attend if you can get a sub 20 time, probably views volunteering as lesser than you and just general shouldn’t take part in something as friendly and inclusive as park run is. Nobody should put anybody off attending something they are considering to better their health and well-being.

no, I am not threatening you. But if I come across you I will point you out to the organisers. You are wholly unsuited to the role of parkrun volunteer, and your presence even on this board is damaging

What would you say now to another cancer sufferer who has been advised by their oncology consultant to attend park run as it helps keep up activity levels, ensuring future health of bones and muscles, in a supportive and encouraging environment where they will be more likely to be able to motivate themselves?

" sod off, I cant be bothered with you"? that is effectively what you are saying. And you consider it a "threat" that your attitude would be reported? What are you being threatened with, exactly, having your Saturdays mornings back to your self, which seems to be the most important thing for you anyway.

You are not a suitable park run volunteer, park run is better off without you. And I repeat, yes, if I come across you in real life, you will be "dealt with" officially, and that is not threatening - you will just be removed from the rota, as you should be

Againstmachine · 10/02/2023 19:37

And threats and being called a cunt, and you are pretending you are friendly and inclusive doesn't take long for masks to slip.

Except you didn't post that you stated that If you met me in person I would be dealt with, thats a threat.

saraclara · 10/02/2023 19:40

The times that are published in a parkrun page..do they include every participant?

If the slowest published time for a single week at my local parkrun is 51 minutes or so, does that mean that a brisk walker occasionally breaking into a little jog (like me) will feel out of place?

Nimbostratus100 · 10/02/2023 19:41

you are the one being unwelcoming and hostile, and seem to have completely missed the whole point of park run

sabs22 · 10/02/2023 19:42

Funny only one person has the awful attitude, thinking her parkrun is maybe a solo one so she can control all aspects!

my local people often hang about afterwards for a coffee, so plenty people not rushing off!

rubbish, read what I have written - I said reported, repeatedly, that is what I mean by "dealt with" not a threat, but a natural consequence for your hostile and inappropriate attitude.

Go on then, answer my question, what is your response to this cancer patient?

Bigbadmama · 10/02/2023 19:44

@saraclara Hi I am a Parkrun Run Director. yes the names on your Parkrun page are all the people who completed the 5K that particular week. Numbers of participants might range from 40 to 500 people depending on all sorts of factors. PM me if you have any questions.

PickupperPenguin · 10/02/2023 19:46

@Againstmachine parkrun hasn’t changed to parkwalk. What they’re trying to do is actively encourage people to come along regardless of their fitness levels, because it is a welcoming, inclusive atmosphere and a great help to everyone’s physical and mental health. You seem to be absolutely set on saying the opposite and discouraging OP and others from giving it a go, which as others have said is the antithesis of the spirit of parkrun.

OP, please do go if you want to and don’t let these people put you off. I did my 100th parkrun last week and love it. It gets my weekend off to such a positive start, doing a bit of exercise and seeing lots of friends and familiar faces. Good luck if you do decide to go. 😊

Ethelfromnumber73 · 10/02/2023 19:47

I love Parkrun and it is totally inclusive- mine has club runners through to walkers. Nobody cares how long anyone takes and it's a really positive supportive atmosphere. I know a few of the volunteers and there is def no pressure to be finished at a particular time, it is what it is. I volunteer for junior Parkrun as it's only 2k and we are always done by 09.30. Maybe that's something to consider if weekend mornings are important to you @Againstmachine

Bigbadmama · 10/02/2023 19:47

@saraclara at 51 mins you will be absolutely fine and remember there is always a tailwalker behind you so you will never come in last. You will find the event motivates you and doing the occasional jog will speed up your time no end. Enjoy ! Its meant to be fun.

Rubbish you clarified after anyhow it was a threat at the time,

Unlike others I've not made personal insults threats or called someone a cunt, but if this is the new parkrun ethos they are welcome to the nasty people.

Thank you. That's very kind of you.

I've looked at ones a little bit further away, and they have people coming in at around 58 minutes to 1hr 10 mins. So maybe I'll get up earlier and travel a bit further until I know where I fit, time wise.

They’ll include your time if you have your barcode scanned. There’s the option of being ‘unknown’ though, if you wanted to - so you take a token in the finish funnel to make sure everyone’s in the right order, but they wouldn’t have your personal barcode to match you with your time, IYSWIM? Or you could make up a name for your barcode, like my FIL has done (still not sure why 😄)

still no answer about your response to such a cancer patient. I hope you are beginning to realise how inappropriate your attitude is, and that you either need to change it totally, or find some other outlet for volunteer work more suited to your personality

and no it wasnt a "threat at the time" as my previous posts made it abundantly clear what I was talking about - maybe you just werent reading them

MirabelMax · 10/02/2023 19:51

Op, ignore the person papping on about people being unfair to volunteers if they walk. The park run founder himself launched a campaign to encourage walking a few months back. Any volunteers who aren't on board with that need to consider finding something else to do on a Saturday morning.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 10/02/2023 19:53

Could you run in a banana outfit?
Then no one will know who you are...

... unless you are actually a banana.

Nimbostratus100 · 10/02/2023 19:53

any answer for the cancer patient at all @Againstmachine ??????

nothing?????? no apology?????

no even slight acceptance that maybe you are in the wrong?????

Bigbadmama · 10/02/2023 19:54

@saraclara Good idea. You soon get to know which Parkruns have lots of walkers and slower runners and more of these folk will come out as the weather gets better. I often travel to another town to run incognito at the back of the pack as everyone at my home PR knows me.

Nope you made a threat I would be dealt with stop pratting about.

And as to the cancer patient this strawman rubbish and you know it.

So you want me to apologise for you telling me I was going to be dealt with, I'm not apologiing to someone who threatened.e then pretends they didnt.
