Is there a solution to this? (Blinds)

We have windows in our loft. They have blackout blinds fitted, which work perfectly when the windows are shut. However in summer we need to sleep with them open, so the sun shines through the opening and wakes us. This must be something that someone has designed a solution to, surely? Maybe a dark mesh fitted to the cavity rather than the glass? Any ideas? I hate losing sleep with the early sunrises

Can you stick some black cardboard up at the right angle to block the sun. Any fabric cover would block a draught. Unless a mosquito net would block enough light, but I doubt it. Can you show us a diagram/picture?

Sleep mask, or keep the windows shut.

I had a loft room in my previous house and there were no blinds on the windows at all and they were too high to open or close, so they were always closed, and always letting in light all year round.

Belle96 · 10/02/2023 17:12

Perfect fits, with blackout material used. Will do the job perfectly

cooldarkroom · 10/02/2023 17:12

I stuck sticky backed velcro around the cavity, & velcroed a custom made rectangle of blackout fabric into the cavity?
But it wasn't perfect & after a while the velco pulls away as you need to pull off the fabric to open & close the window.

LoobyDop · 10/02/2023 17:13

I have this problem. I think a sleep mask is the only answer.

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 10/02/2023 17:14

Roller blind with hooks fitted on the bottom and eyes fitted in the recess so you pull the blind across the window and hook it in position then when you want it open you just unhook and roll it up.

4 poster bed with curtains!

This is the correct answer.

NorthernWanker · 10/02/2023 17:39

Would an air conditioner not be a better solution so no need to sleep with the windows open?

Is this a company name?

Its absolutely boiling in the summer, no way we could keep them shut at night

That's what I did last year, but I don't really like it

Yeah but very pricey. We have a fan that called it's an air con unit but it's not much good

Perfect fits (blinds2go) sit on the frame I think, so you can open the window then close the blind. I think?

Just had a look - looks like they fit to the window to me, unless I'm missing something?

No, the blinds are called perfect fits, it's a frame that sits in your window frame and the fabric then pulls down, I have them on my French doors in the back room and they are great. I dont have blackout fabric but I do know you can get them made with this

MrsMoastyToasty · 10/02/2023 17:52

How about something like this? Looks like you would need a curtain pole at the top and bottom.

Just to add they clip into your window frame so no messing about with the actual windows but they do look like they're installed into the windows

cardibach · 10/02/2023 17:53

I used a curtain with apple on the slope of the roof above the velux (assuming that’s what you have from the description) and a wire across where the slope meets the straight wall. Curtain sits against the wall in the slope and then behind the wire falls against the wall.

cardibach · 10/02/2023 17:53

Apple? A pole.

That won’t help with a velux though.

shoes4life · 10/02/2023 17:55

Yeah the problem with veluzx is the way they open. Half the window is then sticking in the gap!

That would work, but because of the angle, even a tiny gap let's the sun directly into my eyes! So it would have to seal to the wall with no gaps at all which could be tricky

ThreeblackCats · 10/02/2023 17:57

We had a similar room many years ago.

Blinds fitted inside the window recess did not work, for same reason as you said op. Once we had blinds fitted outside the recess and a hook thing to tie the blind closed, somewhat similar to how @MrsMoastyToasty photo shows, it worked a treat.
sorry, kind of difficult to explain, I hope I made myself clear.

Hmm. Our wall is quite short so the windows are relatively low (face height) with no straight wall under. Not sure if that would work but might try it
