To find the word "female" demeaning

LoraPiano · 10/02/2023 10:56

I increasingly see women being referred to as "female" as in "that female over there" or "a female approached my husband" or "females like chocolate". I hear it from both men and women, but especially from the younger generation, and usually about younger women.

Is it me or this is a little rude and insulting? Like there are reducing them to their gender and completely taking the person our of it. It's not a female giraffe, or a female bird.

Am I old fashioned? What's wrong with just saying woman/girl/lady etc?

It has a lot to do with incel/MRA, absolutely no doubt about that!

However it also has a lot to do with gender ideology (much of which is also rooted in/connected with misogyny) and the dangerous situation we're in right now where women in particular cannot speak, nor act, in truthful, factual terms.

What I’ve noticed on nearly every “JK Rowling is evil” thread on Facebook theincel participation is nearly matching the trans. Basically they are woman bashing (for different reasons). But both groups fundamentally hate women and think they should bow down to the needs of men

Burgoo · 11/02/2023 10:43

I've never heard female being used in normal conversation. Ever.

TangledWebOfDeception · 11/02/2023 10:50

Good for you. What's your point, though?

Helleofabore · 11/02/2023 10:51

zurigirl · 10/02/2023 19:12

I'm fairly sure this has nothing at all to do with trans people and everything to do with incel / "nice guy" behaviour.

And unfortunately, you would be wrong. It has to do with all the groups you mention. Either them directly using the word or because insistence in kindness and under the guise of tolerance, the word is needed because other people’s lauded kindness has left women and girls with no words that describe themselves to the exclusion of males.

When you have prominent male people such as India Willoughby, and Veronica Ivy/Rachel McKinnon using the word female for themselves, there is no words left for our use. If posters are happy with that, then they have missed the step where McKinnon/Ivy used it in a sporting federation consultation to force open the definition of ‘female’ for the female sports category. So that McKinnon/Ivy a very overweight competitor can still get a podium place easily in their age group cycling competition at world level.

If you think it has ‘nothing at all’ to do with trans people, you have either simply not seen or deliberately ignored all the media, the government guidance and the social commentary where women have been told exactly that. To give up their words for male people to use for themselves.

Endlesssummer2022 · 11/02/2023 10:53

Reminds me of incels when I hear it.

MrsMidClegs · 11/02/2023 13:51

I've no issue with being called female. I'm also a woman, an adult human female.

There's all this confusion around sex and gender and with all the issues eg the transwoman double rapist Isla May being called a woman and how the reporters described his heinous acts against women by using HER p3nis then well...

It seems we have lost the meaning of woman so are clinging on to the word female for dear life.

I'm no feminist but I also remind my daughter when she blathers on about what a great feminist her father is, I remind me of these words

FEMinists (fight against)
MisoGYNy (and)
SEXism

So the word Female is an accurate word of describing our Sex, and actually really very important. Our sex is encoded in to every cell in our body and no man, irregardless of how many hormones or surgical reconstructions he has, can ever change that

Swiftswatch · 11/02/2023 13:54

Like there are reducing them to their gender and completely taking the person our of it.
If this is the angle you take offence to I really don’t see how ‘woman’ or ‘girl’ are any different.

Calling · 11/02/2023 14:27

TangledWebOfDeception · 10/02/2023 10:58

Also, it’s SEX, not gender. It’s really important right now that we make a distinction between those terms.

This.

Abitofalark · 11/02/2023 14:58

I have always hated hearing people speak of 'a female', referring to a woman or girl; it's so zoological. It's as if they're not referring to a person.

It's a considerable contrast with the use of 'lady' or 'ladies' as a notionally more respectful form than 'woman', which is suspect - is it too 'common' or too earthy? It would be regarded as somewhat discourteous to say, especially in the presence of the person: 'This woman has lost her bag, as opposed to 'This lady has lost her bag.' It's as if it is not offering her full and due dignity.

MichaelFabricantWig · 11/02/2023 15:00

I don’t mind it too much, but I see where you are coming from.

reminds me of socially awkward Martin in Friday Night Dinner

Using “female” as a noun (“there’s a female over there”) rather than an adjective (“she is female”) is a common trait in incel culture and is used to dehumanise women. This is because, traditionally, “female” was only used as a noun to refer to animals (“the females gathered by the waterhole to look for mates”) and female humans were simply called “women”.

Oh I hadn’t realised that. Changes my view somewhat

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 11/02/2023 15:08

LADY makes me wanna boak. Confused Not fussed either way about 'female.'

I do think though, when you see someone post on here, (when women or girls are referred to as females, or the poster starts off with 'ok ladies...') it's a 95% certainty that it's a man.

I don't know any women personally who call women or girls 'females' and it's very rare that I hear them call them 'ladies....'

Shortpoet · 13/02/2023 11:56

This is female as a noun in a misogynistic (and race fetishisation) sense.

JudgeRudy · 13/02/2023 12:29

I wouldn't find female insulting. Yes I get it's originally an adjective but it sounds odd to say I saw a female person, so using it as a noun seems OK.
I get annoyed at 'mixed' titles eg A man was dancing with a female. I think they should go in pairs, so man woman, or female male.
Some posters have referenced female being a misogynist's term eg 'How to attract females' however I'd say the equivalent is true for men eg 2 males in hoodies were seen fleeing the scene. In headlines women often get described by their looks or role eg attractive mother of 3 Sarah said...
But no, I don't take offence at being called a female.

JudgeRudy · 13/02/2023 12:34

Shortpoet · 13/02/2023 11:56

I'm being genuine here...how is that misogynistic? The person (presumably a male) is looking to date a local female. He's asking for tips to not offend and up his chances. Is it the word female? What am I missing?

TangledWebOfDeception · 13/02/2023 12:36

Because it should be how to attract a woman. Since women aren’t actually animals (or than in the human animal sense obviously).

There is no argument for using the term female when one can, and should, just use the actual word for adult human female, which is ‘woman’.

TangledWebOfDeception · 13/02/2023 12:38

@JudgeRudy some people may of course use the term without any intended misogynistic undertones. However it is undeniably very closely bound up with certain trains of thought and behaviour which are deeply misogynistic.

TangledWebOfDeception · 13/02/2023 12:39

*should say ‘other than’ up there. Stupid autocorrect.

Shortpoet · 13/02/2023 12:39

For me it’s the way he uses female as a noun, and as though all Japanese women are the same. Like he’s going location hunting for a species called female.
I personally get creepy vibes from it.
I saw it posted in list of cringy posts and thought it fitted here.

comments below read it as creepy too.

It became necessary once men put in frocks and started to call themselves women. We need to distinguish based on sex so female is the obvious answer.

if men stopped stealing our stuff it wouldn’t be necessary - but the trans ideology is about dehumanising women so men can get their way

@OMG12
lnteresting! So claiming it back like the N word?
OK now a male to female transpersonal can be a woman (gender) but they cannot be a female (bio sex)....hmmmmm 🤔

TangledWebOfDeception · 13/02/2023 12:52

They can’t be a woman. That is a linguistic/legal fiction which is really damaging to us all as it stands because it supports an ideology which is based on a delusion. They can’t be a woman, just as certainly as they can’t be female.

JudgeRudy · 13/02/2023 13:01

RebulahConundrum · 10/02/2023 12:04

It's dehumanising. You NEVER hear men referred to as males.

I do. It's usually when referring to criminals/offenders.

Not really - I’m not black so can’t comment on the N word

But under no circumstances can a man become a woman.

unfortunately due to the infiltration of TRAs into schools, media and social media pushing their harmful agenda some people have become confused as to what a woman is (which can never include a male person).

However, the use of the word female signifies the multitude of times it is necessary to distinguish by sex.

People should be able to use the word woman here (and I do, if any person indicates this also included those born with a penis I set about setting that straight). But for those who have been purposefully confused by the gender ideologists and are too scared to use the would woman they use female.

It is the word woman we are protecting from LARPing men who think they can appropriate it, reminding people about the correct definition of woman (adult female human) and therefore they won’t need to use the word female.

LoraPiano · 13/02/2023 14:40

@OMG12 yes and what stops trans men from using the word female next if we give them woman?
