To be terrified of the coming summer?

Last year there were 24,000+ heat-related deaths due to the heatwave, and the temperatures here were astronomical. It was the worst summer I've ever experienced, sweating constantly, sticking to every surface, always dehydrated, warm water coming out the cold tap, and sweating as soon as I stepped out of the bath. I also had a very unhappy, sweaty, screamy 1.5 year old!

AIBU to be absolutely dreading this year? Apparently the Met Office has claimed 2023 will have an even hotter summer. I don't know if I can bear it again. DP and I are thinking of booking a holiday just to be somewhere liveable. This is also the first winter I've actually enjoyed because of the relief from the heat.

If you are struggling when other people aren't, you might want to consider seeing a homeopath. You should be able to find one near you.
I had a client years ago who couldn't cope at all with heat, she got much better and could even sit in the sun after treatment. We are all different, but if you are really struggling to cope you might need help. I'm sure you can find someone near you. Also avoid things that are warming, such as ginger, chilli, booze, sugar.

Somefang · 11/02/2023 22:06

It was uncomfortably hot for a bit but it usually passes quite quickly. Remember to close windows until the air is cooler outside than inside and shut curtains during the day, if you have a garden and it's not naturally got any shade get a canopy thing, a fan at night with a bowl of cold water/ice in front of it, lots of cotton loose clothing. I find now I'm slimmer they're easier to deal with, used to really struggle in the heat when I was over weight.

I like the heat but come on, it was hot. It broke the temperature record in England, Wales and Scotland FGS.

I think you need to formulate a plan. You can't lose weight but what about:

  • fitness, training
  • hydration sachets, electrolytes
  • don't drink hot drinks, use oven, unnecessary appliances and lights.
  • open windows when temp outside is lower than inside. shut windows when temp outside is higher than inside.
  • look at your clothing, only wear loose cotton.
  • don't use lotions, moisturisers and so on. tie hair back.
  • if you can take annual leave during that time, go up to Scotland or somewhere cooler.

At the end of the day it was really hot but not for a massively extended period so try to view it like that and get through it. Having said that, I think a lot of the comments poo pooing it are maybe from people who weren't in inner city flats in direct sunlight for example.

”At the end of the day it was really hot but not for a massively extended period so try to view it like that and get through it”

I’m sorry but for some of us it was uncomfortable for the entire season, some of us also can’t afford to get aircon, or trips to Scotland, fitness training and hydration sachets, cost of living is putting most on the edge at the best of times.

I’m fairly fit dude, I walk to work (45 mins each way) instead of bussing, I work in a job that requires standing for 10+ hours, so it’s not like I get uncomfortable from being a larger side.

I think we all just have to disagree as you can’t just deny someone’s opinion of having a really bad time from heat just as we can’t deny someone’s opinion from loving it

CosyFanTucci · 11/02/2023 22:07

It was hot for weeks last summer in the south. Our garden has never been so scorched. The number of people buying air-con units would be funny if it wasn’t so tragic, being exactly what causes further climate change. Genius. Fact is, most of us on Mumsnet will be OK during our lifetimes, it’s our children that will have to live on a harsher planet. Instead of tens of thousands of people arriving on the south coast, there will be hundreds of thousands, probably millions, of climate refugees. I wonder how that will play out.

MissMaple82 · 11/02/2023 22:08

It was fucking awful.. dreading it also.

MissMaple82 · 11/02/2023 22:09

Ifailed · 10/02/2023 08:11

I see your 24k heat-related deaths and raise it to 30k cold-related deaths.

Thars global warming for you

For those who are ridiculing or minimising OPs experience, evidently your body’s physical reaction to that level of heat isn’t the same as hers.

Exactly

Maybe but it could also be that our melodramatic reaction isn't the same as hers. 😂

Bbq1 · 11/02/2023 22:27

I feel your pain, Op. All the pp's saying we had a few days of hot weather - no, we had a long, unbearably hot summer. I also live in the North but that made little difference.

Isinglass20 · 11/02/2023 22:37

Screamingbanshees
Hot in Liverpool 🤣🤣? Get on a ferry or just sit at the Pierhead for cooling breezes. Lovely in summer evenings to walk by the river Mersey and watch the sun set and the ships going in and out of port. You can swim in the docks. Sit in one of the restaurants in the Albert dock and sip some wine 🍷. Can’t wait 😛

Tropicaliyes · 11/02/2023 22:40

Funny how some dont remember the fact the last year was the hottest on record since records began! Maybe it is because it didnt personally effect many of you but i know for sure that where i am in London the heat can be stifling! Way before it hit 40°c last year we had a major issue with the heat melting the tarmac on the road and the tires of cars and the sun causing fires from reflecting off of our glass buildings.

we barely open our curtains so its not that we are letting the suns rays through the window which is heating the house and it gets so hot that opening the windows lets in hot air instead of cooling the place down! We bought a household AC every year for the past like 3-4 years now and each time it ends up being returned on warranty as it cant handle the heat and the unit itself overheats!

I can understand where your coming from with dreading the hotter months and im due to give birth just as summer starts so its going to be great! If you do get an AC get one now when its cold as the prices are lower than when the demand is high during the hotter months. Unfortunately our homes in the UK are not built for hot weather (or cold for that matter). So until our houses are adapted in time it will be unpleasant in built up cities.

I tell you what though, our Cactus plants flowered last year sitting on our windowsill in the bedroom which apparently is a rare occasion and only happens when the conditions are right.. so that was interesting!

Whowhatwherewhenwhy1 · 11/02/2023 22:47

Move to west coast of ireland. You would love it - barely a day above 20 degrees!

userxx · 11/02/2023 22:50

OutDamnedSpot · 11/02/2023 20:13

I’m baffled. I can’t really remember it being hot.

There were some crazy hot days, i aimed the fan at the dog and froze a hot water bottle for him. They went as quickly as they came though.

MRSsqueak · 11/02/2023 23:22

i am looking forward to summer.... wont need to top up the gas often and will likely use a LOT less electric than we are at the moment. I have always loved spring and summer altho i will have to be careful this year as i have never burnt before as i have olive skin but last summer i did and it was so sore.... i think thats a sign of getting older so will be layering on the factor 50+ this summer. im always happier in summer i have better dress sense for summer clothes and spend more time outdoors. the garden needs a makeover so im looking forward to doing something with it. the heatwaves were miserable but i found the JML chillmax air a godsend last summer

fizzypop100 · 11/02/2023 23:24

I agree with OP. The summer was horrible. The heat went on and on. We even resorted to putting foil and blackout blinds in the windows. We are in Yorkshire. Never had a summer like that and winter has been great

mydogisthebest · 11/02/2023 23:25

I assume that all the heat lovers and the ones insisting it was not hot last year don't work.

All making the same comments about air con, fans, not opening the windows, having a paddling pool, going to the beach and all the other pathetic comments.

How the hell does any of that help someone who has to go to work? Someone who has to travel on an overheated bus or train or, even worse, the tube?

I did all the things with windows, curtains, fans, ice block, cold showers etc etc and none of it helped in the slightest.

To feel ill day after day is no joke. To have a migraine, throw up endlessly, feel like you can't breathe properly, hardly sleep. Good for you that so many love the heat but many don't.

Also saddens and sickens me that so many are hoping that we have a repeat of those temperatures. Climate change is something to be concerned about not to be happy about because you like the heat. You should be very concerned about the future you children face

Danielle9891 · 11/02/2023 23:28

I found the year before (2021)worst as I was heavily pregnant then overweight but i managed ok. I've lived in South East Asia and Australia so I've learnt to close my curtains during the afternoon, have a cool shower, use a sheet instead of a quilt and drink plenty of water. Also wearing sandals and light clothing helps.
I never thought I'd see temperature hit 30 in Ireland. 🥴

Augustlou30 · 11/02/2023 23:37

I guess it depends what you do too. I work in healthcare so it doesn't matter if it's too hot or cold we can't just go home or close a hospital. Occasionally I guess procedures are cancelled if equipment overheats etc. Luckily for me I work in cath labs and theatre where it has to be kept cool for equipment so we're always freezing, but the wards were horrendous, lights were all off to try and cool the place down. I'd have really struggled working in that. I'm in scotland too so it wasn't as bad as down south.

Johnisafckface · 11/02/2023 23:39

I dread the summer every year. But I live in a location where it gets really hot from May/June thru Sept.

Glitterblue · 11/02/2023 23:39

I'm not terrified but I'm not looking forward to it. I hated last year's hideous heat and we all had a sickness bug right in the middle of the heatwave which was horrible.

Catg79 · 11/02/2023 23:51

isthismylifenow · 10/02/2023 08:11

Go and buy an aircon, cheaper than moving or an extended holiday away, also less dramatic.

So unbelievably rude. I hate the snarky comments on here. The heat was disgusting last year and it was longer than a few days. Portable aircon doesn’t help either. Hardly dramatic to post for advice on a thread that people to use to get actual advice.

Ron1 · 12/02/2023 00:04

I don't get on well with the heat. We have a large ceiling fan in the bedroom its great even when its blowing around warm air. We also have an air con unit in the living room for when we need to cool off. BTW were in the north and it did get hot but not as bad as down south.
If you feel so bad in the heat maybe worth getting your thyroid checked. I have underactive which makes it hard for the body to regulate body temperature making it more uncomfortable than most people during the hot or cold weather. (found this out from my doc) Just a thought.

PhoenixIsFlying · 12/02/2023 00:21

It depends on whether you live in a house or a flat. I live in a small massionette, which in the winter is great it warms up. In the summer it is like living in a greenhouse. There is no cool area you can escape to or garden to lounge in. It's an unbearable hot box.

beatricedarl · 12/02/2023 00:24

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 10/02/2023 09:10

It's always been okay to tell someone you think they're overreacting.

Why wouldn't it be okay? Not all reactions are healthy and many are actually detrimental in the long run.

do you not hear yourself

Oldwmn · 12/02/2023 00:57

This is climate change, kiddies. Aircon is just using more energy.
