To be terrified of the coming summer?

Last year there were 24,000+ heat-related deaths due to the heatwave, and the temperatures here were astronomical. It was the worst summer I've ever experienced, sweating constantly, sticking to every surface, always dehydrated, warm water coming out the cold tap, and sweating as soon as I stepped out of the bath. I also had a very unhappy, sweaty, screamy 1.5 year old!

AIBU to be absolutely dreading this year? Apparently the Met Office has claimed 2023 will have an even hotter summer. I don't know if I can bear it again. DP and I are thinking of booking a holiday just to be somewhere liveable. This is also the first winter I've actually enjoyed because of the relief from the heat.

Have you ever been abroad?

GillyBmumofthree · 11/02/2023 18:40

Absolutely you’re being unreasonable, we live in a cold, grey damp climate most of the time so a bit of sunshine is a real treat. If this is global warming bring it on.why not
buy yourself an air con unit?

hartof · 11/02/2023 18:40

I hated the heat last summer too OP. I am sort of dreading this summer because of that, but I'm looking forward to the nice days we have when the weather is nice. I just wish it wouldn't go over 24 degrees. I can cope with that, the 30+ temperatures we had last summer were unbearable in our new build house that has the sun on it all day long and it really holds the heat in (good in winter though!). We have a portable ac unit but we have genuinely considered having it fitted properly if the summers continue to be this hot. And we're in the northwest! I can't imagine what it was like down south.

DTT39 · 11/02/2023 18:41

24,000 is number of excess deaths in Europe

3,500 is the number for UK

For period June 1 to Aug 31st

vitahelp · 11/02/2023 18:42

I’m not personally dreading it or concerned, on the contrary I’m hoping for hot weather in the summer.
But I can appreciate that for some people it will be a worry. I have suffered with panic attacks in the past and humidity and heavy hot air were a trigger. I can also understand anyone vulnerable to heat or, like you, with health concerns which are made worse by heat might be worried.

I hope you can find some support and reassurance, and practical advice for getting through it.

PeanutButterSmoothie · 11/02/2023 18:43

I didn't think it was that bad. And I was driving a truck with broken a/c which was 36° when moving and 44° whr stationary. In safety trousers and a high viz. Plenty of water and it was manageable.

LoisLane66 · 11/02/2023 18:45

UK based, I don't do well in hot or even very warm weather. Autumn and Spring cooler weather suits me much better.
I have had emergency attention in Primark, M&S, Waitrose and Sainsbury's The first three had medics who luckily happened to be shopping at the time. In Sainsbury's they called an ambulance and took my BP, later had an ECG as pulse was 110.
I can go out in bitter winter weather in a t-shirt and thin leggings no hat, coat, scarf or gloves and feel perfectly comfortable.
This is weird as it only started when I was about 60-61. Not on any meds and only shop early morning or after 4pm. 🌞😫

Parentsofaprincess · 11/02/2023 18:46

It is a tad dramatic but it was hot for a few periods last year and obviously that extreme heat in july.and early August. Heatwaves are not unusual and this was only unusual for tipping 4C for the first time in the UK. We have certainly experienced longer heatwaves. 1976, 1990, 1995, 2005, 2018 for example.

Are they more frequent ?possibly. Is it global warming? Possibly. Can we do anything about it, realisticay no we can't and I don't know why we try to. The world always sorts itself out. Remember in the 1800s we had a mini ice age with frost fairs on the Thames. And the Romans grew grapes in Northumberland 3000 years ago, the world goes through peaks and troughs.

We are actually well overdue an ice age!!

Littleladygeorge · 11/02/2023 18:48

I can understand your anxiety, I have a lifelong illness that makes really hot summers unbearable especially here with the humidity. At the moment I’m just taking each week as it comes though and enjoying the cold(er) weather, trust me when you reach peri menopause then you really will fear the hot weather!

axolotlfloof · 11/02/2023 18:49

I hope you work put a way to make your house cooler, but I honestly don't recognise your hot summer 2022.
There was a hot spell, close to the end of the Summer term.
The school holidays really weren't that hot.
Keeping blinds and curtains closed on hot days makes a massive difference in our house.

Tribblesarelovely · 11/02/2023 18:50

It certainly was torture, and I love the heat, but I’m sick of sitting under a duvet and can’t wait for summer.

Soulstirring · 11/02/2023 18:50

I can’t wait for summer

AJTommo · 11/02/2023 18:50

I hated it too as did my dogs & horses. DP loves it though which makes it all so much worse! Anything over 20c & I'm uncomfortable

CRD67 · 11/02/2023 18:51

Nonsense. "To date, 3,271 excess deaths have been recorded during heat-periods in 2022 in England and Wales. This is an average of 82 excess deaths per day, and 6.2% higher than the five-year average." www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/articles/excessmortalityduringheatperiods/englandandwales1juneto31august2022#:~:text=To%20date%2C%203%2C271%20excess%20deaths,than%20the%20five%2Dyear%20average.

Crumpetdisappointment · 11/02/2023 18:52

@Wafflington i take it you werent in the southeast? let alone in this country.
i did eventually go the beach, but it was advised against going on car journeys, i dont have air conditioning. - where do you suggest I go to that has air conditioning? Confused
this shade? not much of it around
omg it was hot,
there were fires due to the heat

SarahAshley2 · 11/02/2023 18:53

I feel you’re being dramatic. I live in the south east and yes it was uncomfortable at times but if you’re this worried and reacted that badly, I feel something is wrong and maybe you need medical attention!

Nightesonhorseback · 11/02/2023 18:55

Do you mind me asking where has this information come from? I thought you couldn't accurately forecast weather more than a fortnight ahead? Genuine question; not dismissing your concerns!

wentworthinmate · 11/02/2023 18:55

I’m dreading it too OP, for slightly different reasons than yourself, namely my dogs who both ended up at the vets from heat stress (not heat stroke) and they never even went outside!
I have already looked at air-con units on Amazon and decent ones are silly money.

Forgot to say have looked at Met Office website but may have missed it!

Mychitchatdays · 10/02/2023 07:54

Yeah, move to West of Scotland.

Hahaha. The first year I moved to London, I had go to back to the west coast in August. Just for a decent sleep.

Maraudingmarauders · 11/02/2023 19:02

I loved the heat but I'm more nervous this year as in August I'll be (all being well) 8 months pregnant and have a feeling I'll enjoy it less...

At the moment I'm dreaming of sunshine and warmth and hard mud walks....

Snacks01 · 11/02/2023 19:04

We got a/c in the bedrooms a few years ago, it changes everything!

Hydrangeatea · 11/02/2023 19:05

I am in the south and have a horse so am constantly watching the temperature and it was really hot for about 3 days in July and hot I mean those 33-34 degree days then it cooled down again to about 23-24 and then we had another 2 really hot days and that was it.

I can remember posts on here from people saying oh my god it is sooooo hot, been going on for weeks and weeks, can't stand it and I was genuinely bemused as to where in the country they mean't as it simply wasn't that hot. I hate anything over 25 degrees to it's not like I was basking in heat, loving it and thinking what are people talking about but it GENUINELY wasn't hot other than those few really hot days that lasted a few days over a month period. It was really weird!

SnipSnapMe · 11/02/2023 19:05

Certainly not looking forward to those extremely hot days, and last year was record hottest in UK. Do like the sunshine, but you can have too much of a good thing and the wildfires were worrying.
Wouldn't look forward to being heavily pregnant in 40C either😬

Crumpetdisappointment · 11/02/2023 19:08

some omputer systems in london were completely screwed
