To be terrified of the coming summer?

screamingbanshees · 10/02/2023 07:49

Last year there were 24,000+ heat-related deaths due to the heatwave, and the temperatures here were astronomical. It was the worst summer I've ever experienced, sweating constantly, sticking to every surface, always dehydrated, warm water coming out the cold tap, and sweating as soon as I stepped out of the bath. I also had a very unhappy, sweaty, screamy 1.5 year old!

AIBU to be absolutely dreading this year? Apparently the Met Office has claimed 2023 will have an even hotter summer. I don't know if I can bear it again. DP and I are thinking of booking a holiday just to be somewhere liveable. This is also the first winter I've actually enjoyed because of the relief from the heat.

I hated the heat- not equipped over here for the 40 degree days. It was gross. I live in a small mid-terrace 3 storey town house and it was BAKING.

I love the current cold weather, sparkly frosty grass in the morning for the school run. So chilly but bright and sunny, can wrap up warm for that but there’s no remedy for the heat!!

ASongOfRiceAndPeas · 11/02/2023 18:20

As someone with hyperhidrosis I also dread the summer (and not just in a melodramatic way, it genuinely affects mental health) and yes last year in the South was HOT, for more than ‘just a few days’ too. I was stressed. It’s lovely to have an actual summer, but it’s not actually enjoyable for everyone.

Love it. 40 degrees in my garden at times and the sea only 20 mins away.
Roll on summer.

Hope you don't have children as you obviously don't care about the likely awful future they will face. As long as you like hot weather that's all that matters

Why are so many posters making light of the OP's reaction to the heat last year?

Keep going on about it not being that hot, or only lasting a couple of days, or how she needs to grow up etc are not helping and just make the posters look pretty pathetic.

It WAS NOT a few hot days and a few hot nights. I felt ill for 3 weeks if not longer. I had a migraine most of the days, felt like I couldn't breathe and barely got any sleep.

We all feel heat and cold differently. Even 25 degrees is too hot for me so all the days that were over that were awful for me.

Some people like the heat and that's great for them. My DH has never ever thought it too hot but he understands that I can't take it and has sympathy for me. Shame some posters don't have sympathy.

I don't particularly feel the cold and am always amazed when I read about people wearing fleecey pyjamas and socks to bed with electric blankets and duvets of over 20 tog. Some people have the heating on overnight too.

We have a 4.5 tog all year round, both sleep naked. have the bedroom radiator on the lowest setting and the heating goes off 3 hours before we go to bed. I am never cold and often wake up in the night so hot I have to throw the duvet off. It's not hot flushes as I have always been like that. I don't tell all those people how pathetic they are

She is in NW tho. It was not 3 weeks of extreme heat here.

Jo586 · 11/02/2023 18:23

The first time I have ever heard of someone leaving the UK for cooler weather. Spent last summer in France, it was 38c in the day, that was warm but never wished I was back home.

HikingforScenery · 11/02/2023 18:23

There we’re like 4 hot days last year here and im
not even very far up north.

So you’re going to spend the next few months “terrified”? Or are you figuring out how you can make it better on those days for you- fan, frozen water bottles, etc?

I LOVE hot weather though

Lizpod · 11/02/2023 18:26

I bought blow up plunge pool, big enough and deep enough for adults to lie in,got from eBay second hand. Cheapish. Put in shade, wear bathers, plop in whenever you need - the kids loved it and so did I xxx

This is quite literally right here, why the English have no bloody clue what to do during the heat. Cowering indoors?? Ffs

Close curtains and windows in the morning, go out to the beach/pool/indoor shopping area with aircon for a few hours. Open your windows and curtains when it's cooler in the evening.

Why are you staying indoors where its invariably going to be HOTTER than outside in the shade or somewhere with aircon??

Well perosnally, I am not allowed to work from a public place for security reasons and I don't go to the office everyday due to pick up and drop off times...
It isn't always a choice?

GyozaGuiting · 11/02/2023 18:29

I didn’t really get the hysteria last summer. We closed our curtains and left the windows open and it was fine indoors. if You go out for a long walk in the midday sun it wojkd have been uncomfortable, but indoors I can’t see the issue.
I have lived in FAR hotter countries though, where our summer is like their spring.

Untitledsquatboulder · 11/02/2023 18:29

There were some days in August when I was on the Serengeti and my mum was in Derbyshire and it was hotter where she was. That was odd.

Adapting our housing stock so it can deal with extremes of hot and cold in an energy efficient way needs to be a thing.

Wow what an ignorant post.

I am sure none of us realised we had to close the curtains and windows. I did that and opened the window and curtains later although it was hardly any cooler. It made absolutely no bloody difference.

I live at least 30 miles from the beach and even further from a shopping area with air conditioning. Shall I drive to one or the other every day?

It was cooler in my house than outside in the shade. Indoors was awful, outside was much much worse.

Thankfully I don't work so I just stayed indoors and did nothing. No housework, no cooking, no dog walking. Still felt ill because of the heat.

Suegmc · 11/02/2023 18:29

Last summer was absolute heaven swimming in warm sea water, no cardigans , sunshine , eating outdoors Roll on summer 2023

Brokenmiata · 11/02/2023 18:30

Bit of an overdramatic take on the heat. We had maximum of two weeks of actually hot weather. Maybe three days of extreme heat. I spent a week in Italy during the heatwave and it was 43⁰ + daily, we all just got on with life as normal, no AC etc. If the heat really bothers you that much, buy an AC unit now before prices increase.

Wafflington · 11/02/2023 18:31

Applesandcarrots · 11/02/2023 18:16

Sadly yeah! The mayhem when it was minus 3 for couple of days here recently was something....
-3c not f

It's always something, too hot, too cold, too meh and rainy, too whatever. And news don't help.
"Artic blast"" -fucking3c...

My workplace sends out warnings of what to do if its too hot or cold and you're travelling to work... I can only imagine the reaction my friends in Aus would have if they were sent similar, or my family in the very North middle-of-nowhere Scandinavia! Probably still be laughing today about it

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 11/02/2023 18:31

Our house has east and west facing windows so for that week(weeks?) where we had the heatwave last year it was like living in a greenhouse morning noon and night.

I hate the hot and I hate the cold.

I also hate that I live with absolute lizard people who need the heat to survive so there was little to no room for compromise either with air con.

But I wouldn't say I'm terrified for it to happen again, if anything it's given me a whole year to plan for it happening again.

Applesandcarrots · 11/02/2023 18:22

She is in NW tho. It was not 3 weeks of extreme heat here.

I live in The Midlands and, FOR ME, it was at least 3 weeks of awful heat. If you read my post properly I said I can't tolerate temperature of 25 degrees or higher and we had quite a few days in the high 20's, quite a few in the 30's and a couple when it was 40 degrees

smalldogsarecute · 11/02/2023 18:33

I feel the same. I live in South Wales. It was horrendous. I cried a lot and I was so depressed. I'm dreading it.

Commonsensitivity · 11/02/2023 18:34

I'm hating the cold wet weather at the moment. I can't wait for a bit of warmth. I've really suffered from the cold this winter. I'm avoiding any summer holidays in hot locations though. Instead we are going on a low carbon train holiday to Paris is April. Trying to do our bir for climate change.

Mutleygirl · 11/02/2023 18:34

I would get some aircon units now when they not expensive.. i hate being hot but it wasn’t unbearable for long !!!

It was not fine in my house whether I had the windows open or closed or the curtains open or closed.

YOU can't see the issue because you are another one that can't see that everyone feels the heat differently

Kennykenkencat · 11/02/2023 18:35

I am in the south and it was wonderful

I was hammering concrete and doing manual work all summer.

I can’t do anything when I am cold.
I haven’t felt the tips of my fingers for days

I could run around with out pain.

Atm I struggle to get out of bed as my joints are in such pain.

CountryMouse22 · 11/02/2023 18:36

I didn't think they could forecast that far ahead, even our esteemed Met Office! Personally I hope it's cooler too but there's nothing we can do about it other than take a holiday somewhere colder. Iceland maybe?

2bazookas · 11/02/2023 18:37

screamingbanshees · 10/02/2023 08:28

No, I was referring to Europe in general, as it was considered a European heatwave rather than just a UK one.

But the temperatures in Europe were far higher than UK . So you're conflating their death count from conditions a small island in the north sea will never suffer.

MarshaBradyo · 11/02/2023 18:37

I prefer hotter summers. Won’t bother with a/c though

I was replying to the part of why people make light of OP's posts.
Because it wasn not that bad up here. I am not sure why you took my post as some attack on your heat tolerance
