What's better in an emergency, old glasses or no glasses??

Glasses destroyed in primary school playground incident. Can't get new ones straight away as it's a prescription that can't be done in an hour. Child's prescription is something like -4 in each eye, so quite strong. What's better whilst we wait for replacement specs? No glasses, or ones from a drawer that are a year old and therefore two prescriptions ago?

Will consider getting a second pair, too, but they are expensive and we haven't had a breakage for three years.

I’m -4.25 and can see fuck all without my glasses!! I’d rather have old ones and see something than nothing at all.

Dinnerdinnerbatman · 07/02/2023 19:08

The internets are full of articles about how bad it is to wear an old prescription. I suppose having no correction is worse, though?

I'm -5 and can't function without glasses or contacts. Definitely use the old specs in the mean time otherwise the poor kid won't be able to see anything!

Caterina99 · 07/02/2023 19:08

I’m -3.5 and again can see fuck all without my glasses. Old glasses better than no glasses!

The old ones. At -4 the world is a blur

MichelleScarn · 07/02/2023 19:11

Thought this was going to be something I stress about a lot ... how would I (blind as a bat) manage in a zombie apocalypse if my glasses broke!!

Should i start hoarding old pairs?
Old better than none!!

Robertwars · 07/02/2023 19:11

This actually happened to me yesterday as left my glasses in work and went home in sunglasses. I wore an old pair all night and it was odd at first but fine . I would get your child to wear them in the house for a hour or so to adjust to the different prescription and them should be okay short term. I couldn't make it down the road without mine !

MRex · 07/02/2023 19:12

Old are better than none. Particularly for a child though, I'd go into the optician to see what they can do. They might be able to cobble together something better or rush the prescription glasses.

ClaphamSouth · 07/02/2023 19:12

I've needed glasses since childhood and am at -5. Definitely old glasses are better than no glasses!

xprincessxjanetx · 07/02/2023 19:13

Definitely old glasses better than none.

Emanresu9 · 07/02/2023 19:14

Old ones definitely.

Here's an analogy for you. Imagine you're starving, now a bowl of cereal won't provide all the nutrients you need it that's all you have every meal. But you have nothing else to eat this week. So, should you have the cereal or have nothing?

statetrooperstacey · 07/02/2023 19:14

Yes old glasses , also next time try spec savers, you get 2 pairs and the y will fix one pair for free.

DramaAlpaca · 07/02/2023 19:15

With that prescription, definitely the old ones.

RandomMess · 07/02/2023 19:15

Are you in the UK?

Asda glasses are the cheapest worth travelling for! Includes varifocals and -10+ prescriptions the works.

CaptainMyCaptain · 07/02/2023 19:16

I always keep the last pair handy in case of emergencies I would barely be able to see at all without any.

MaverickGooseGoose · 07/02/2023 19:16

The old ones! Something is better than nothing. I'm -3.75 and can't cope without lenses.

Last time I took DS to specsavers they didn't do a spare pair for free anymore.

Pashazade · 07/02/2023 19:17

Definitely old over nothing, I usually have a spare pair kicking around for my son for just this reason. Although when he managed to trash his frames the other week the opticians just popped the lenses in a new set of frames for us for nothing. Although this did coincide with actually needing his annual check and ordering new glasses.

HipHopBanzai · 07/02/2023 19:19

At -6.5, I'm blind as a bat without my glasses. I'd take old ones with a slightly weaker prescription over no glasses any day of the week!

Dinnerdinnerbatman · 07/02/2023 19:23

They are bifocals and I don't think they are included in all the deals.

OP posts:
Dinnerdinnerbatman · 07/02/2023 19:24

They also take forever to arrive at the store.

OMG this is like a nightmare - give the poor child the old glasses and find a new pair (anything) asap - to to every optician in town! And going forward have a back up spare.

gogohmm · 07/02/2023 19:26

Old is better than none. Look at online opticians for spare pairs

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 07/02/2023 19:27

Definitely old glasses.

I couldn't function without my glasses so I always keep a spare pair in the house.
